The number of states in the reporting area differ historically. In 1915 (when the birth registration area was established), 10 states and the District of Columbia reported births; by 1933, 48 states and the District of Columbia were reporting births, with the last two states, Alaska and Hawaii, added to the registration area in 1959 and 1960, when these regions gained statehood. Reporting area information is detailed in references 1 and 2 below. Trend lines for 1909–1958 are based on live births adjusted for under-registration; beginning with 1959, trend lines are based on registered live births.

After a peak in 2021, the number of home construction starts decreased two years in a row. However, those figures are expected to pick back up in the next years. Single-family homes are the preferred option for Americans Single-family homes were the most common type of home purchased in 2023 in the United States, making up roughly 79 percent of all purchases, showing that demand for single-family units remains strong. That explains why there is usually a far higher number of single-family homes than of other type of homes being built any given year. The cost of housing varies around the United States. In 2023, the most expensive median price of an existing single-family home was on the West coast. In 2021, the average size of households in Utah was 2.99 people, the largest of any state. Hawaii, California, Idaho, and Texas rounded out the top five states for largest household size in that year. Nationwide, the average household size was 2.54 people.

As of the third quarter of 2023, the highest number of conversion projects in the U.S. were office-to-multifamily projects. The total number of conversion projects aimed at generating housing units from outdated office buildings was 264, representing nearly 39 percent of the total conversions. Moreover, a multitude of projects were undertaken to transform offices into life sciences initiatives, totaling 184. Both office-to-hotel and industry conversions contributed more than nine percent, totaling over 18 percent. Finally, office-to-mixed-use and other uses accounted for nearly 16 percent of ongoing or planned conversion projects.

In 2023, there were 403 institutions of higher education in the state of California. Of these 403 institutions, 250 were four-year institutions and 153 were two-year institutions. California had the most higher education institutions of any state in that year.
