    Description

The Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS) were drawn up by Eurostat in order to define territorial units for the production of comparable regional statistics across the European Union. The NUTS classification has been used in EU legislation since 1988, but it was only in 2003 that the EU Member States, the European Parliament and the Commission established the NUTS regions within a legal framework (Regulation (EC) No 1059/2003). For the purpose of comparability, NUTS classifications remain stable for at least three years, as specified by the regulation. However, if national interests require a change in the regional breakdown of a country, the country concerned may notify the European Commission, who will then carry out the required amendments at the end of a period of stability, according to the rules of the NUTS regulation. Changes made under the 2014 Local Government Act prompted a revision to the Irish NUTS 2 and NUTS 3 Regions. The NUTS 3 boundaries were amended on 21st of November 2016 and have been given legal status under the Commission Regulation (Regulation (EC) No 2066/2016). The main changes at NUTS 3 level are the transfer of South Tipperary from the South-East into the Mid-West NUTS 3 region and the movement of Louth from the Border to the Mid-East NUTS 3 Region. The NUTS 3 boundaries are available as generalised (20/50/100m) and ungeneralised. The NUTS coding scheme and naming structure were decided by Eurostat. The new NUTS 2 and NUTS 3 structure and classification are displayed in a table on the CSO website https://www.cso.ie/en/methods/revnuts23/

    Description

To meet the demand for statistics at a local level, Eurostat maintains a system of Local Administrative Units (LAUs) compatible with NUTS. These LAUs are the building blocks of the NUTS, and comprise the municipalities and communes of the European Union. Until 2016, two levels of Local Administrative Units (LAU) existed:The upper LAU level (LAU level 1, formerly NUTS level 4) were defined for most, but not all of the countries, and, the lower LAU level (LAU level 2, formerly NUTS level 5) consisted of municipalities or equivalent units in the 28 EU Member States. Since 2017, only one level of LAU has been kept. The LAUs are administrative for reasons such as the availability of data and policy implementation capacity, a subdivision of the NUTS 3 regions covering the whole economic territory of the Member States, and appropriate for the implementation of local level typologies included in TERCET, namely the coastal area and Degree of Urbanisation (DEGURBA) classification.Since there are frequent changes to the LAUs, Eurostat publishes an updated list towards the end of each year. Until 2019, The LAUs in Ireland correspond to the Electoral Division (Statistical CSO) boundary. However since 2019, the LAUs for Ireland reflect the Local Electoral Areas as defined in Local Electoral Areas and Municipal District Orders 2018 (SI nos 27/2019 and 28/2019).

Member States send to Eurostat data on population on of 31 December of the reference year under Regulation 1260/2013 on European demographic statistics. The data are conventionally published by Eurostat as population on 1 January of the following year (reference year + 1). The aim is to collect annual mandatory and voluntary demographic data from the national statistical institutes. Mandatory data are those defined by the legislation listed under ‘6.1. Institutional mandate — legal acts and other agreements’. The completeness of the demographic data collected on a voluntary basis depends on the availability and completeness of information provided by the national statistical institutes. For more information on mandatory/voluntary data collection, see 6.1. Institutional mandate — legal acts and other agreements. The following statistics are available. Population on 1 January by sex and by: - single age and educational attainment / marital status / broad group of citizenship / broad group of country of birth; - five-year age group and citizenship / country of birth; - citizenship and broad group of country of birth / country of birth and broad group of citizenship; - broad age group and NUTS 3 (under regional data population folder); - single age and NUTS 2 (under regional data population folder); - five-year age group and NUTS 2 / NUTS 3 (under regional data population folder). Population structure statistics: median age of population, proportion of population by various age groups, old age dependency ratio.

    Description

The Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS) were drawn up by Eurostat in order to define territorial units for the production of regional statistics across the European Union. The NUTS classification has been used in EU legislation since 1988, but it was only in 2003 that the EU Member States, the European Parliament and the Commission established the NUTS regions within a legal framework (Regulation (EC) No 1059/2003). The Irish NUTS 3 regions comprise the eight Regional Authorities established under the Local Government Act, 1991 (Regional Authorities) (Establishment) Order, 1993 which came into operation on January 1st 1994. The NUTS 2 regions, which were proposed by Government and agreed to by Eurostat in 1999, are groupings of the Regional Authorities.

    Description

PyPSA-Eur is an open model dataset of the European power system at the transmission network level that covers the full ENTSO-E area. It can be built using the code provided at https://github.com/PyPSA/PyPSA-eur.

It contains alternating current lines at and above 220 kV voltage level and all high voltage direct current lines, substations, an open database of conventional power plants, time series for electrical demand and variable renewable generator availability, and geographic potentials for the expansion of wind and solar power.

Not all data dependencies are shipped with the code repository, since git is not suited for handling large changing files. Instead we provide separate data bundles to be downloaded and extracted as noted in the documentation.

This is the full data bundle to be used for rigorous research. It includes large bathymetry and natural protection area datasets.

While the code in PyPSA-Eur is released as free software under the MIT, different licenses and terms of use apply to the various input data, which are summarised below:
