A vector polygon layer that includes 1) the New York State boundary over land areas and 2) the state shoreline, including islands, in areas where the state boundary extends over major hydrographic features. The purpose is to provide an “outline” of the state for GIS and cartographic uses. It can be used to clip the boundaries in the Cities, Towns, or Cities_Towns layers back to the shoreline if it is desired to only use or depict the land areas covered by those jurisdictions around the perimeter of the state. The boundaries were revised to 1:24,000-scale accuracy. Ongoing work will adjust the shorelines to 1:24,000-scale accuracy.

Additional metadata, including field descriptions, can be found at the NYS GIS Clearinghouse: https://gis.ny.gov/civil-boundaries.

Spatial Reference of Source Data: NAD 1983 UTM Zone 18N. Spatial Reference of Map Service: WGS 1984 Web Mercator Auxiliary Sphere.

    Description

Topographic sheets (t-sheets) produced by the National Ocean Service (NOS) during the 1800s provide the position of past shorelines. The shoreline data can be vectorized into a geographic information system (GIS) and compared to modern shoreline data to calculate estimates of long-term shoreline rates of change. Many t-sheets were scanned and digitized by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and are available on the NOAA Shoreline website (https://shoreline.noaa.gov/data/datasheets/t-sheets.html). However, some t-sheets were not scanned by NOAA and are only available via the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). The data included within this data release were previously unavailable or not published in digital format. These data were produced to provide a more comprehensive record of shoreline position for Fire Island and Great South Bay, New York, to aid geologic and coastal hazards studies. This data release includes previously unavailable georeferenced t-sheets and digital vector shorelines for the Fire Island and Great South Bay, New York, coastline from 1834, 1838, and 1874/1875. The original t-sheets were scanned by the NARA-authorized vendor and sent to the Unites States Geological Survey St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center (USGS SPCMSC) as non-georeferenced digital raster files. Upon arrival at the SPCMSC, USGS staff performed the following procedures: rasters were georeferenced, projected to a modern datum, and shorelines were digitized to create a vector polyline depicting the historical shoreline position. The t-sheets included in this data release are: 1) T-479a, T-479b, T-1 (Parts 2 and 3) (1834); 2) T-58 (Parts 1 and 2) (1838); 3) T-1374a, T-1374b, T-1375a, T-1375b (1874); and 4) T-1402 (1875). All shorelines, including the ocean-facing barrier island shoreline, back-barrier island shoreline, mainland and islands were digitized. Please read the full metadata for details on data collection, dataset variables, and data quality.

A vector polygon layer of county boundaries in New York State up to, and using the shorelines of, major hydrographic features. The source data was originally a compilation of U.S. Geological Survey 1:100,000-scale digital vector files and NYS Department of Transportation 1:24,000-scale and 1:75,000-scale digital vector files. Boundaries were revised to 1:24,000-scale positional accuracy and selectively updated based on court decisions. Currently, boundary changes are made as needed based on authoritative sources.

    Description

The New York State Coastal Management Program has established statewide boundaries in accordance with the requirements of the Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972, as amended, and its subsequently issued rules and regulations. The Coastal Map provides an estimation of the official New York State Coastal Area Boundary as defined in Section II of the New York State Coastal Management Program and Final Environmental Impact Statement (CMP FEIS). The coastal boundary was originally created as a set of maps at a scale of 1:48000. This digital representation has been created from the original paper copies through "heads-up" digitizing using geographic information software and the digital NYSDOT planimetric quadrangles at a scale of 1:24000. The official coastal boundary is a written description contained in the federally approved New York State Coastal Management Program, LIS CMP, and applicable LWRPs. The waterward boundary extends 3 miles into open ocean, to shared state lines in Long Island Sound and the New York Bight and to the International boundary in the Great Lakes, Niagara and St. Lawrence Rivers. Generally, the inland boundary is approximately 1,000 feet from the shoreline following well-defined features such as roads, railroads or shorelines as described in the CMP FEIS, unless otherwise indicated. Where necessary this boundary extends inland to include major state owned lands and facilities and electic power generation facilities which abut on the shoreline, major coastal recreational areas, significant agricultural lands, significant coastal habitats, scenic viewsheds of State or national significance, major historic or coastal dependent industrial areas, and the 100 year flood plain. In urbanized and other developed locations along the coast, the landward boundary is approximately 500 feet from the shoreline or less than 500 feet at locations where a major roadway or railway line runs parallel to the shoreline. The seaward boundary of New York State's coastal area includes all coastal waters within its territorial jurisdiction.View Dataset on the Gateway

The Hudson River Estuary Shoreline was mapped in the field and on desktop to inventory all existing 'Engineered' and 'Natural' shorelines. Each shoreline segment was inventoried using a pre-defined set of descriptions for 'Nature', Structure', 'Substrate', 'Adjacent Land Use', and 'Condition'. Each shoreline was geo-located using ArcGIS Survey 123 on a computer tablet and a photo was taken for shorelines mapped in the field. Engineered shorelines immediately adjacent to railroad tracks and the river were mapped from desktop and used stock photos of rail road shorelines to represent the existing condition..

These data provide an accurate high-resolution shoreline compiled from imagery of Hudson River, NY . This vector shoreline data is based on an office interpretation of imagery that may be suitable as a geographic information system (GIS) data layer. This metadata describes information for both the line and point shapefiles. The NGS attribution scheme 'Coastal Cartographic Object Attribute Source Table (C-COAST)' was developed to conform the attribution of various sources of shoreline data into one attribution catalog. C-COAST is not a recognized standard, but was influenced by the International Hydrographic Organization's S-57 Object-Attribute standard so the data would be more accurately translated into S-57. Description

Publication Date: May 2025.

Updated as needed. Current as of the Publication Date.

This map service is available to the public.
