    The World Ocean Database (WOD) is the largest uniformly formatted, quality-controlled, publicly available historical subsurface ocean profile database. From Captain Cook's second voyage in 1772 to today's automated Argo floats, global aggregation of ocean variable information including temperature, salinity, oxygen, nutrients, and others vs. depth allow for study and understanding of the changing physical, chemical, and to some extent biological state of the World's Oceans.     Description

    This dataset contains global monthly climatology of oceanic total dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). (DIC) monthly climatology was created from a neural network approach (Broullón et al., 2020). The neural network was trained with GLODAPv2.2019 (Olsen et al., 2019) and LDEOv2016 (Takahashi et al., 2017) data, using as predictor variables position (latitude, longitude and depth), year, temperature, salinity, phosphate, nitrate, silicate and dissolved oxygen. pCO2 from LDEOv2016 and AT from Broullón et al. (2019) were used to compute DIC surface values to increase the surface coverage in the training data. The relations extracted between the predictor variables and DIC were used to obtain the climatology passing through the network global monthly climatologies of the predictor variables: temperature and salinity fields of the World Ocean Atlas version 2013 (WOA13), filtered WOA13 oxygen (fifth-order one-dimensional median filter through the depth dimension; see Broullón et al., 2019 for details) and nutrients computed using CANYON-B (Bittig et al., 2018) over the three previous fields. The obtained climatology has a 1ºx1º spatial resolution and 102 depth levels between 0 and 5500 m, with a monthly resolution from 0 to 1500 m and an annual resolution from 1550 to 5500m.

    Description

    The International Comprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere Data Set (ICOADS) is a global ocean marine meteorological and surface ocean dataset. It is formed by merging many national and international data sources that contain measurements and visual observations from ships (merchant, navy, research), moored and drifting buoys, coastal stations, and other marine and near-surface ocean platforms. Each marine report contains individual observations of meteorological and oceanographic variables, such as sea surface and air temperatures, wind, pressure, humidity, and cloudiness. The coverage is global and sampling density varies depending on date and geographic position relative to shipping routes and ocean observing systems.

    The latest Release 3.0 (R3.0) of ICOADS covers 1662-2014, and is coupled with improved "preliminary" monthly data and product extensions past 2014. R3.0 includes changes designed to enable more effective exchange of information describing data quality between ICOADS, reanalysis centers, data set developers, scientists and the public. These user-driven innovations include the assignment of a unique identifier (UID) to each marine report, to enable tracing of observations, linking with reports and improved data sharing. Other revisions and extensions of the International Maritime Meteorological Archive (IMMA) common data format incorporate new near-surface oceanographic data elements and cloud parameters. Many new input data and metadata sources have been assembled, and updates and improvements to existing data sources, or removal of erroneous data, made.

    Description

    The World Ocean Database (WOD) is the world's largest publicly available uniform format quality controlled ocean profile dataset. Ocean profile data are sets of measurements of an ocean variable vs. depth at a single geographic location within a short (minutes to hours) temporal period in some portion of the water column from the surface to the bottom. To be considered a profile for the WOD, there must be more than a single depth/variable pair. Multiple profiles at the same location from the same set of instruments is an oceanographic cast. Ocean variables in the WOD include temperature, salinity, oxygen, nutrients, tracers, and biological variables such as plankton and chlorophyll. Quality control procedures are documented and performed on each cast and the results are included as flags on each measurement. The WOD contains the data on the originally measured depth levels (observed) and also interpolated to standard depth levels to present a more uniform set of iso-surfaces for oceanographic and climate work. The source of the WOD is more than 20,000 separate archived datasets contributed by institutions, project, government agencies, and individual investigators from the United States and around the world. Each dataset is available in its original form in the National Centers for Environmental Information data archives. All datasets are converted to the same standard format, checked for duplication within the WOD, and assigned quality flags based on objective tests. Additional subjective flags are set upon calculation of ocean climatological mean fields which make up the World Ocean Atlas (WOA) series. The WOD consists of periodic major releases and quarterly updates to those releases. Each major release is associated with a concurrent release of a WOA release, and contains final quality control flags used in the WOA, which includes manual as well as automated steps. Each quarterly update release includes additional historical and recent data and preliminary quality control. The latest major release was WOD 2018 (WOD18), which includes nearly 16 million oceanographic casts, from the second voyage of Captain Cook (1772) to the modern Argo floats (end of 2017). The WOD presents data in netCDF ragged array format following the Climate and Forecast (CF) conventions for ease of use mindful of space limitations.

    Description

    The Ocean Data Inventory database is an inventory of all of the oceanographic time series data held by the Ocean Science Division at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography. The data archive includes about 5800 current meter and acoustic doppler time series, 4500 coastal temperature time series from thermographs, as well as a small number (200) of tide gauges. Many of the current meters also have temperature and salinity sensors. The area for which there are data is roughly defined as the North Atlantic and Arctic from 30° - 82° N, although there are some minor amounts of data from other parts of the world. The time period is from 1960 to present. The database is updated on a regular basis.

    Oceanic Environmental data were collected from the ALAMINOS and other platforms from 01 February 1971 to 01 December 1971. Data were collected in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean by Texas A&M University (TAMU) and other institutions as part of the International Decade of Ocean Exploration (IDOE). Data is predominantly based on analysis of zooplankton samples. Data include concentrations of metals in fish, sea water, plankton, and sediments. Data was submitted to the National Science Foundation as a report titled 'A Study Program to Identify Problems Related to Oceanic Environmental Quality -- Gulf of Mexico' on 10 January 1972. Analog copies of report are available by contacting NODC user services.

    Description

    This dataset consists of global oceanic database of tritium and helium isotope measurements made by numerous researchers and laboratories over a period exceeding 60 years: from 1952-10-21 to 2016-01-22 in the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Southern Ocean, Arctic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, Baltic Sea, Black Sea. Tritium and helium isotope data provide key information on ocean circulation, ventilation, and mixing, as well as the rates of biogeochemical processes, and deep-ocean hydrothermal processes. The dataset includes approximately 60,000 valid tritium measurements, 63,000 valid helium isotope determinations, 57,000 dissolved helium concentrations, and 34,000 dissolved neon concentrations. Some quality control has been applied in that questionable data have been flagged and clearly compromised data excluded entirely. Appropriate metadata has been included: geographic _location, date, and sample depth. When available, water temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen were included. Data quality flags and data originator information (including methodology) are also included.

    Description

    World Ocean Database 2009 (WOD09) is a collection of scientifically quality-controlled ocean profile and plankton data that includes measurements of temperature, salinity, oxygen, phosphate, nitrate, silicate, chlorophyll, alkalinity, pH, pCO2, TCO2, Tritium, delta-13Carbon, delta-14Carbon, delta-18Oxygen, Freons, Helium, delta-3Helium, Neon, and plankton. A discussion of data sources is provided. Data are both historical and modern with the most recent data from 2008.

    World Ocean Database 2009 is an update of World Ocean Database 2005. It expands on the older version by including new variables, data types, and additional historical, as well as modern, observations. It contains all data from earliest observation through our collection as of Dec. 31, 2009. The 2009 database, updated from the 2005 edition, is significantly larger providing approximately 9.1 million temperature profiles and 3.5 million salinity reports. The 2009 database also captures 29 categories of scientific information from the oceans, including oxygen levels and chemical tracers, plus information on gases and isotopes that can be used to trace the movement of ocean currents. An online version of the World Ocean Database is updated quarterly.

    ODV (contains the Ocean Data View software for viewing the WOD09 data, developed by Dr. Reiner Schiltzer, AWI. This software will decompress selected files and offers users several options for viewing the WOD09 data. ODV works on PCs only);
    PROGRAMS (contains source code and executables for programs which are examples of how to read the data and can be used to reformat the data into comma-delimited or space-delimited forms);
    UTILS (contains the gzip utility for uncompressing WOD09 data files).

    PELD-ILOC (Long Term Ecological Research of Brazilians Oceanic Islands) is a network of Brazilian scientists from several universities and organizations engaged in long-term ecological research of marine biodiversity on the four Brazilian oceanic islands. The network unites researchers to monitoring the marine wildlife all around the St. Peter and St. Paul’s Archipelago, Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, Rocas Atoll and Trindade Island and Martin Vaz Archipelago since 2013. Gaining these long-term knowledge, PELD-ILOC plays a fundamental role in understanding oceanic islands ecosystems and thereby provide the prerequisites for knowledge-based solutions to many current and future environmental problems. The goal of the PELD-ILOC is to provide long-term research to the scientific community, policymakers, and society with the knowledge and predictive understanding necessary to conserve, protect, and manage the Brazilian oceanic islands ecosystems, their biodiversity, and the services they provide. This dataset compiles data from 2006 to 2019 gathered from all four islands at different depths and sites and is related to reef fish (Actinopterygii) species occurrence, size and abundance.

    The SODA (Simple Oceanographic Data Assimilation) datasets are global ocean reanalysis datasets created by assimilating timely temperature and salinity observational data into an eddy permitting forecast model based on the Parallel Ocean Program POP1.3 model forced with ERA40 winds. SODA was created to reconstruct historical ocean climate variability on space and timescales similar to those captured by the atmospheric reanalysis projects at NCEP. The CSIRO version of the ENACT dataset is a concatenation of the individual monthly variables into single netcdf files for the time period 1958-2001 with a spatial resolution of .5° x .5° at 40 levels. It has also been processed to include calculated anomaly and climatological forms of this data.     Description

    Historical shoreline surveys were conducted by the National Ocean Service (NOS), dating back to the early 1800s. The maps resulting from these surveys, often called t-sheets, provide a reference of historical shoreline position that can be compared to modern data to identify shoreline change. The t-sheets are stored at the National Archives and many have been scanned by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and are available on the NOAA Shoreline Web site (http://www.shoreline.noaa.gov/data/datasheets/t-sheets.html). While some scanned t-sheets were georeferenced and digitized by NOAA, still others remain as non-georeferenced raster files (http://nosimagery.noaa.gov/images/shoreline_surveys/survey_scans/NOAA_Shoreline_Survey_Scans.html). New_Jersey_1839_75_t-sheets.zip features 8 georeferenced raster t-sheets for the New Jersey coastline from 1839 to 1875. The data were scanned by NOAA, but were not georeferenced. The t-sheets included in this data release are: T-121 (1839), T-119 Part 1 (1841), T-1084 (1868), T-1166 (1870), T-1333 (1871), T-1315a (1872), T-1371 (1874), T-1407 (1875). Digital files were georeferenced, corrected to a modern datum, and shorelines digitized to provide a vector polyline depicting the historical shoreline position using ArcGIS 10.3.1. GEoreferenced t-sheets were used to delineate and shorelines for use in long-term shoreline and wetland analyses for Hurricane Sandy wetland physical change assessment.

    Description

    The dataset contains 3D wide-angle seismic data from 18 ocean bottom nodes (OBXs) collected during RRS James Cook cruise JC254 in November 2023. The data were acquired at the 1330 Oceanic Core Complex (OCC) and the Semenov Hydrothermal Field region of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge at 13°30'N, and were shot in six sequences (SEM4A to SEM4F), along 15 profiles in total. Two GI-guns were used as seismic sources, each with a total volume of 355 cubic inches (250 cu. inch generator, 105 cu. inch injector chamber. The data were recorded at a sampling rate of 2000 Hz, with a shot interval of 20 s at a ship speed of 4 knots, resulting in shot interval of ~30 m, with no stop during profile turns. The data are provided in raw SEGY format, cut into four components (three geophone channels and one hydrophone channel). This dataset was collected to derive a seismic velocity structure of the 13°30'N OCC. The aim was to investigate the crustal or mantle lithologies in the 13°30'N OCC and to understand the interplay between tectonic faulting, magmatism, alteration and hydrothermal circulation at the ultramafic-hosted hydrothermal systems along slow-spreading ridges. The data were collected as part of a NERC-funded strategic research project called 'Ultramafic-hosted mineral Resource Assessment (ULTRA)', grant reference NE/S004068/1. The data were processed and interpreted as part of a PhD studentship hosted by the University of Southampton, awarded to Szu-Ying Lai, and funded by Equinor A.S, Norway.

    Description

    This National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) archival information package (AIP) contains a product generated by NCEI-- the Global Ocean Currents Database (GOCD). It is derived from NCEI AIPs that hold in situ ocean current data from a diverse range of instruments, collection protocols, processing methods, and data storage formats. For acceptance into the GOCD, the data must have sufficient quality control and thorough documentation. The GODC merges the variety of original formats into the NCEI standard network common data form (NetCDF) format. From the shipboard acoustic Doppler current profiler sets, the GOCD creates files that hold single vertical ocean currents profiles. The GOCD spans 1962 to 2013.

    Description

    This dataset contains daily-averaged ocean velocity interpolated to a regular 0.5-degree grid from the ECCO Version 4 revision 4 (V4r4) ocean and sea-ice state estimate. Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean (ECCO) ocean and sea-ice state estimates are dynamically and kinematically-consistent reconstructions of the three-dimensional, time-evolving ocean, sea-ice, and surface atmospheric states. ECCO V4r4 is a free-running solution of the 1-degree global configuration of the MIT general circulation model (MITgcm) that has been fit to observations in a least-squares sense. Observational data constraints used in V4r4 include sea surface height (SSH) from satellite altimeters [ERS-1/2, TOPEX/Poseidon, GFO, ENVISAT, Jason-1,2,3, CryoSat-2, and SARAL/AltiKa]; sea surface temperature (SST) from satellite radiometers [AVHRR], sea surface salinity (SSS) from the Aquarius satellite radiometer/scatterometer, ocean bottom pressure (OBP) from the GRACE satellite gravimeter; sea ice concentration from satellite radiometers [SSM/I and SSMIS], and in-situ ocean temperature and salinity measured with conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) sensors and expendable bathythermographs (XBTs) from several programs [e.g., WOCE, GO-SHIP, Argo, and others] and platforms [e.g.,research vessels, gliders, moorings, ice-tethered profilers, and instrumented pinnipeds]. V4r4 covers the period 1992-01-01T12:00:00 to 2018-01-01T00:00:00.

    Description

    This NCEI accession consists of the estimated changes in the ocean content of anthropogenic CO2 (Cant) between 1994 and 2007 as described in detail in Gruber et al. 2019. These estimates have been derived from the GLODAPv2 product [Olsen et al., 2016] using the eMLR(C*) method developed by Clement and Gruber [2018]. This method is based on the eMLR method [Friis et al., 2005], which determines the change in Cant on the basis of linear regression fits to data from two different time periods (here the JGOFS–WOCE era (~1994) and the Repeat Hydrography–GO-SHIP era (~2007)). The dataset contains in addition to the standard estimate also the estimates of 13 sensitivity cases, where different elements of the estimation procedure were changed to assess the robustness of the estimates. All estimates are given on 1x1 degree resolution. Two files are provided, i.e., one containing the full three-dimensional distribution of the change in Cant between 1994 and 2007 and one containing the vertically integrated values, i.e., the column inventories. These data provide strong constraints on the role of the ocean as a sink for anthropogenic CO2, and given the global nature of our assessment also constraints on the global carbon budget, specifically the magnitude of the land carbon sink. The estimates will prove also useful to assess ocean acidification and evaluate ocean models with regard to their carbon uptake and storage.

    The map is designed to be used as a basemap by marine GIS professionals and as a reference map by anyone interested in ocean data. The basemap focuses on bathymetry. It also includes inland waters and roads, overlaid on land cover and shaded relief imagery.The Ocean Base map currently provides coverage for the world down to a scale of ~1:577k; coverage down to ~1:72k in United States coastal areas and various other areas; and coverage down to ~1:9k in limited regional areas.The World Ocean Reference is designed to be drawn on top of this map and provides selected city labels throughout the world. This web map lets you view the World Ocean Base with the Reference service drawn on top.
