TwitterTikTok news consumption is on the rise. Back in 2020, just three percent of respondents to a survey held in the United States stated that they regularly got their news from TikTok. By 2024, this figure had increased almost sixfold to 17 percent. Younger adults – those aged between 18 and 29 years old – are the most frequent TikTok news users, with almost 40 percent getting news there on a regular basis, double that of adults between 30 and 49 years and more than ten times the share of adults aged 65 and above. The rise of TikTok as a news source TikTok’s penetration rate in the U.S. is highest among adults aged between 18 and 24 years. More than three quarters of consumers in this age bracket use the platform, and for teens aged between 12 and 17 years, the figure was similarly high at almost 70 percent. These young users are those driving TikTok’s growing popularity as a news source. Whilst X (formerly known as Twitter) remains the most used social network for news, TikTok is rapidly catching up. Alongside Facebook, TikTok now ranks as the second most popular social media site for news consumption, with 43 percent of U.S. adults regularly using each platform to keep up to date, and TikTok is set to overtake Facebook in the next year in this respect. The share of U.S. adults using Facebook for news fell consistently in every year from 2020 to 2023, whereas in the same time period, the share getting news via TikTok almost doubled. The most popular news publishers on TikTok According to the most recently available data, the leading news publisher on TikTok in the U.S. is socially native brand NowThis, with 5.5 million followers. Targeting left-leaning younger consumers, NowThis describes itself as social media’s number one video news brand. Ranking second, third, and fourth respectively are broadcast TV news outlets ABC, NBC, and CBS with between three and five million followers. Meanwhile, left-leaning cable network CNN had less success with a follower count of under 1.5 million.

TikTok is developing into a key platform for news, advertising, politics, online shopping, and entertainment in Germany, with over 20 million monthly users. Especially among young people, TikTok plays an increasing role in their information environment. We provide a human-coded dataset of over 4,000 TikTok videos from German-speaking news outlets from 2023. The coding includes descriptive variables of the videos (e.g., visual style, text overlays, and audio presence) and theory-derived concepts from the journalism sciences (e.g., news values).
This dataset consists of every second video published in 2023 by major news outlets active on TikTok from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The data collection was facilitated with the official TikTok API in January 2024. The manual coding took place between September 2024 and December 2024. For a detailed description of the data collection, validation, annotation and descriptive analysis, please refer to [Forthcoming dataset paper publication].

Back in 2018, a teenager in Ohio posted a short dance clip on TikTok. Within hours, her video was stitched, duetted, and remixed by thousands worldwide. A year later, a fashion influencer in LA racked up millions of views from a single Instagram Reel on sustainable style tips. What began...

We are probably all familiar with TikTok. People tend to spend hours each day scrolling through the millions of videos which are uploaded every single day. Not to mention the uploaders who are giving anything to get as many likes and followers as possible. But what makes one TikTok video a true hit or a miss? I give you an opportunity to figure this out ;)
I scraped the first 1000 trending videos on TikTok, using an unofficial TikTok web-scraper. Note to mention I had to provide my user information to scrape the trending information, so trending might be a personalized page. But that doesn't change the fact that certain people and videos got a certain amount of likes and comments.
I transformed the data into usable csv files and attached the actual videos as well.
Videos.zip This file contains the actual 1000 trending TikTok videos. Each filename corresponds to the id key in the trending.json file.
trending.json The raw scraped dataset. I figured splitting up the dataset resulted in messy errors. For example: a user might have one avatar while posting a video and another while posting the next video. This resulted in multiple users with the same name, id etc. except for the avatar. So I decided to post the raw data and I will show you how to translate this multi-level JSON structure to a single DataFrame in my first Notebook.
Many thanks to Andrew Nord the creator of the tiktok-scraper, and his contributers.
So what does make a TikTok video a true hit? Is it the moment when a video is uploaded? Or perhaps the amount of followers is an important factor? Maybe the hashtags or even the music being used?
So... are you the one who unlocks the mystery?
