The Census Bureau’s urban areas represent densely developed territory, and encompass residential, commercial, and other non-residential urban land uses. To qualify as an urban area, the territory identified according to criteria must have at least 5,000 people or 2,000 housing units. The 2020 Census changed how urban areas are determined from the 2010 criteria. The population requirement was increased to 5,000 people from 2,500 in 2010. This value is now determined by housing unit density instead of population density. Urban areas can now also be defined by the number of housing units present. Finally, the 2020 Census does not distinguish different types of urban areas. The 2015 TIGER Geodatabases are extracts of selected nation based and state based geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File/Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) database. The geodatabases include feature class layers of information for the fifty states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Island areas (American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, and the United States Virgin Islands). The geodatabases do not contain any sensitive data. The 2015 TIGER Geodatabases are designed for use with Esriâ s ArcGIS.
The 2015 State Geodatabase for Ohio contains multiple layers. These layers are the Block, Block Group, Census Designated Place, Census Tract,
County Subdivision and Incorporated Place layers.
Block Groups (BGs) are clusters of blocks within the same census tract. Each census tract contains at least one BG, and BGs are uniquely numbered
within census tracts. BGs have a valid code range of 0 through 9. BGs have the same first digit of their 4-digit census block number from the same
decennial census. For example, tabulation blocks numbered 3001, 3002, 3003,.., 3999 within census tract 1210.02 are also within BG 3 within that

The primary purpose of census tracts is to provide a stable set of geographic units for the presentation of census data and comparison back to
previous decennial censuses. Census tracts generally have a population size between 1,200 and 8,000 people, with an optimum size of 4,000 people.
When first delineated, census tracts were designed to be homogeneous with respect to population characteristics, economic status, and living
conditions. The spatial size of census tracts varies widely depending on the density of settlement. Physical changes in street patterns caused by
highway construction, new development, and so forth, may require boundary revisions. In addition, census tracts occasionally are split due to
population growth, or combined as a result of substantial population decline. Census tract boundaries generally follow visible and identifiable
features. They may follow legal boundaries such as minor civil division (MCD) or incorporated place boundaries in some States and situations to
allow for census tract-to-governmental unit relationships where the governmental boundaries tend to remain unchanged between censuses. State and
county boundaries always are census tract boundaries in the standard census geographic hierarchy. In a few rare instances, a census tract may
consist of noncontiguous areas. These noncontiguous areas may occur where the census tracts are coextensive with all or parts of legal entities
that are themselves noncontiguous. For the 2010 Census, the census tract code range of 9400 through 9499 was enforced for census tracts that
include a majority American Indian population according to Census 2000 data and/or their area was primarily covered by federally recognized American
Indian reservations and/or off-reservation trust lands; the code range 9800 through 9899 was enforced for those census tracts that contained little
or no population and represented a relatively large special land use area such as a National Park, military installation, or a business/industrial
park; and the code range 9900 through 9998 was enforced for those census tracts that contained only water area, no land area.
An incorporated place is established to provide governmental functions for a concentration of people as opposed to a minor civil division (MCD),
which generally is created to provide services or administer an area without regard, necessarily, to population. Places always nest within a state,
but may extend across county and county subdivision boundaries. An incorporated place usually is a city, town, village, or borough, but can have
other legal descriptions. CDPs are delineated for the decennial census as the statistical counterparts of incorporated places. CDPs are delineated
to provide data for settled concentrations of population that are identifiable by name, but are not legally incorporated under the laws of the state
in which they are located. The boundaries for CDPs often are defined in partnership with state, local, and/or tribal officials and usually coincide
with visible features or the boundary of an adjacent incorporated place or another legal entity. CDP boundaries often change from one decennial
census to the next with changes in the settlement pattern and development; a CDP with the same name as in an earlier census does not necessarily
have the same boundary. The only population/housing size requirement for CDPs is that they must contain some housing and population.
The boundaries of most incorporated places in this shapefile are as of January 1, 2013, as reported through the Census Bureau's Boundary and
Annexation Survey (BAS). Limited updates that occurred after January 1, 2013, such as newly incorporated places, are also included. The boundaries

TwitterWe characterize Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) use in Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) units with the intent to explore whether the subsidy overlap responds to needs unmet by the HCV program alone. Lacking the data to contrast HCV use in and out of LIHTC units, we turn to a comparison of HCV users in LIHTC units relative to the overall HCV population. Our analysis of 2011 tenant-level LIHTC data from Ohio and HCV data from HUD suggests place-based vouchers, which must be redeemed in an LIHTC unit, are more likely allocated to extremely low-income or special-needs households. TwitterThis dataset was created for the Appalachia Ohio GIS Collaborative Hub by taking the 2020 Census TIGER/Line Tract boundaries and ZIP Code boundaries, filtered for Ohio, and joining them to the 2020 USDA Rural Urban Commuting Area (RUCA) Codes tables downloaded from the USDA. RUCA codes are a classification scheme allowing for flexible, census tract and ZIP code delineation of rural and urban areas throughout the United States and its territories. There are two layers in this dataset, census tracts and ZIP codes. By default they are symbolized by the Primary RUCA code. Both layers include Primary and Secondary RUCA codes. The census tract layer additionally includes the Urban Area Cluster associated with a tract, the Urban Core Type, primary and secondary commuting destinations, population, and population density. More detail about attributes can be found in the description for each layer.2020 Rural-Urban Commuting Area (RUCA) CodesThe USDA, Economic Research Service’s (ERS) Rural-Urban Commuting Area (RUCA) codes are a classification scheme allowing for flexible, census tract delineation of rural and urban areas throughout the United States and its territories. RUCA codes were designed to address a major limitation associated with county-based classifications; they are often too large to accurately delineate boundaries between rural and urban areas. The more geographically-detailed information provided by RUCA codes can be used to improve rural research and policy—such as addressing concerns that remote, rural communities in large metropolitan counties are not eligible for some rural assistance programs.The RUCA codes consist of two levels. The primary RUCA codes establish urban cores and the census tracts that are the most economically integrated with those cores through commuting. The secondary RUCA codes indicate whether a census tract has a strong secondary connection (through commuting) to an even larger urban core. This two-level structure provides flexibility in combining levels to meet varying definitional needs and preferences. The land cover inventory for the State of Ohio was produced by the digital image processing of Landsat Thematic Mapper Data. The Thematic Mapper is a multi-spectral scanner that collects electromagnetic radiation reflected from the earth's surface in the visible, near infrared and mid-infrared wavelength bands. The resolution of the Thematic Mapper data is a 30 meter by 30 meter cell. The computer analysis of the data isolates unique spectral classes that relate to land cover characteristics.
The land cover inventory was produced from Thematic Mapper data acquired in September and October 1994. The data was classified into the general land cover categories of urban, agriculture/open urban areas, shrub/scrub, wooded, open water, non-forested wetlands and barren.
The land cover information reflects the conditions of the satellite data during the specific year and season the data was acquired. The Thematic Mapper data was processed using ERDAS image processing software. The data was originally created in raster format and georeferenced to Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) zone 17 coordinates NAD27. The data can be combined with other georeferenced digital data layers.
The data is also available in its original ERDAS image format.

The 2024 cartographic boundary KMLs are simplified representations of selected geographic areas from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). These boundary files are specifically designed for small-scale thematic mapping. When possible, generalization is performed with the intent to maintain the hierarchical relationships among geographies and to maintain the alignment of geographies within a file set for a given year. Geographic areas may not align with the same areas from another year. Some geographies are available as nation-based files while others are available only as state-based files. Block Groups (BGs) are clusters of blocks within the same census tract. Each census tract contains at least one BG, and BGs are uniquely numbered within census tracts. BGs have a valid code range of 0 through 9. BGs have the same first digit of their 4-digit census block number from the same decennial census. For example, tabulation blocks numbered 3001, 3002, 3003,.., 3999 within census tract 1210.02 are also within BG 3 within that census tract. BGs coded 0 are intended to only include water area, no land area, and they are generally in territorial seas, coastal water, and Great Lakes water areas. Block groups generally contain between 600 and 3,000 people. A BG usually covers a contiguous area but never crosses county or census tract boundaries. They may, however, cross the boundaries of other geographic entities like county subdivisions, places, urban areas, voting districts, congressional districts, and American Indian / Alaska Native / Native Hawaiian areas. The generalized BG boundaries in this release are based on those that were delineated as part of the Census Bureau's Participant Statistical Areas Program (PSAP) for the 2020 Census.

This dataset contains turbidity data and storm event characters of three urban watersheds in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Turbidity data were collected at a frequency of 10 minutes using in-situ Cyclop-7 turbidimeters designed by Turner Designs and integrated with a Cyclops-7 logger by Precision Measurement Engineering, Inc. Data were collected for three years from September 2018 to 2021. Turbidity data is harmonized with instantaneous discharge data from USGS stream gages. Event characteristics contains runoff, precipitation and antecedent characteristics. The data support the findings of the study titled "Urbanization and Suspended Sediment Transport Dynamics: A Comparative Study of Watersheds with Varying Degree of Urbanization using Concentration-Discharge Hysteresis".

The records in this file allow users to map the parts of Urban Areas that overlap a particular county. After each decennial census, the Census Bureau delineates urban areas that represent densely developed territory, encompassing residential, commercial, and other nonresidential urban land uses. In general, this territory consists of areas of high population density and urban land use resulting in a representation of the "urban footprint." There are two types of urban areas: urbanized areas (UAs) that contain 50,000 or more people and urban clusters (UCs) that contain at least 2,500 people, but fewer than 50,000 people (except in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam which each contain urban clusters with populations greater than 50,000). Each urban area is identified by a 5-character numeric census code that may contain leading zeroes. The primary legal divisions of most states are termed counties. In Louisiana, these divisions are known as parishes. In Alaska, which has no counties, the equivalent entities are the organized boroughs, city and boroughs, municipalities, and for the unorganized area, census areas. The latter are delineated cooperatively for statistical purposes by the State of Alaska and the Census Bureau. In four states (Maryland, Missouri, Nevada, and Virginia), there are one or more incorporated places that are independent of any county organization and thus constitute primary divisions of their states. These incorporated places are known as independent cities and are treated as equivalent entities for purposes of data presentation. The District of Columbia and Guam have no primary divisions, and each area is considered an equivalent entity for purposes of data presentation. The Census Bureau treats the following entities as equivalents of counties for purposes of data presentation: Municipios in Puerto Rico, Districts and Islands in American Samoa, Municipalities in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and Islands in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The entire area of the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Island Areas is covered by counties or equivalent entities. The boundaries for counties and equivalent entities are as of January 1, 2010.
