    Description

Global oil production amounted to ************ barrels per day in 2024. The level of oil production reached an all-time high in 2024. However, the coronavirus pandemic and its impact on transportation fuel demand led to a notable decline in 2020. Rising production and consumption Apart from events surrounding global economic crisis as in the late 2000's and 2020, oil production consistently increased every year for the past two decades. Similarly, global oil consumption only decreased in 2008, 2009, and 2020, but has otherwise increased to a higher level year after year. Oil and oil products remain invaluable commodities as most transportation fuels are petroleum-based and oil is a major raw material for the chemicals industry. Production by region and country While total production is rising, regional distribution has shifted, with the share of production declining the most in Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) since 2008, and rising the most in North America. Even though as a region the Middle East still produces the largest share of oil worldwide, the United States is currently the worl'ds largest producer of oil, followed by Saudi Arabia and Russia.

    Description

This map service displays present and past oil and gas production in the United States, as well as the location and intensity of exploratory drilling outside producing areas. To construct this map, digital data were used from more than 3 million wells in IHS Inc.'s PI/Dwights PLUS Well Data on CD-ROM, current through 10/1/2005. In some areas, the PI/Dwights data tend not to be complete, particularly for pre-1920 production. IHS data was supplemented with state wells databases for Indiana, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Illinois, and Ohio, (current as of 2004 to 2006). Because of the proprietary nature of many of these databases, the area of the United States was divided into cells one quarter-mile square and the production information of each well is aggregated in each cell. No proprietary data are displayed or included in the cell maps. The cells are coded to represent whether the wells included within the cell are predominantly oil-producing, gas-producing, both oil and gas-producing, or the type of production of the wells located within the cell is unknown or dry. The cell attributes also contain the latitude and longitude values of the center-cell coordinates.

    Description

Production of natural gas in the United States has been increasing for the past decade and peaked at nearly 1033 billion cubic meters in 2023 and 2024. An increase in production corresponded with rising demand for natural gas in the United States, particularly after the 2008 Recession.    Natural gas becomes competitive Since the early 2000s, the price of coal had been going up, and increased more rapidly following the 2008 Recession, which affected the cost of crude oil to an even greater degree. When the price of crude oil peaked shortly after the financial crisis, consumption of petroleum decreased in the next year. Simultaneously, the cost of natural gas dramatically decreased, making it a stronger competitor with coal and petroleum. The rise of fracking Low-interest rates during the Recession led to new investments in new techniques to obtain natural gas, such as horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing, that may be controversial due to health and environmental impacts. Often obtained through fracking, shale gas has become a common form of natural gas, and shale gas production in the United States has increased dramatically since the financial crisis.

These wells were used to create gas and oil field polygons. The field polygons include discovery data, number of producing wells in the field, average measured depth of those well, total gas and oil production from 1977-2014, gas oil ratio (GOR), and field type. Also, included is a table with historic gas and oil production from 1977-2014.
