    Description

The ArcGIS Online US Geological Survey (USGS) topographic map collection now contains over 177,000 historical quadrangle maps dating from 1882 to 2006. The USGS Historical Topographic Map Explorer app brings these maps to life through an interface that guides users through the steps for exploring the map collection:

    • Find a location of interest.
    • View the maps.
    • Compare the maps.
    • Download and share the maps or open them in ArcGIS Desktop (ArcGIS Pro or ArcMap) where places will appear in their correct geographic location.
    • Save the maps in an ArcGIS Online web map.

Finding the maps of interest is simple. Users can see a footprint of the map in the map view before they decide to add it to the display, and thumbnails of the maps are shown in pop-ups on the timeline. The timeline also helps users find maps because they can zoom and pan, and maps at select scales can be turned on or off by using the legend boxes to the left of the timeline. Once maps have been added to the display, users can reorder them by dragging them. Users can also download maps as zipped GeoTIFF images. Users can also share the current state of the app through a hyperlink or social media. This ArcWatch article guides you through each of these steps: https://www.esri.com/esri-news/arcwatch/1014/envisioning-the-past.

Once signed in, users can create a web map with the current map view and any maps they have selected. The web map will open in ArcGIS Online. The title of the web map will be the same as the top map on the side panel of the app. All historical maps that were selected in the app will appear in the Contents section of the web map with the earliest at the top and the latest at the bottom. Turning the historical maps on and off or setting the transparency on the layers allows users to compare the historical maps over time. Also, the web map can be opened in ArcGIS Desktop (ArcGIS Pro or ArcMap) and used for exploration or data capture.

Users can find out more about the USGS topograhic map collection and the app by clicking on the information button at the upper right. This opens a pop-up with information about the maps and app. The pop-up includes a useful link to a USGS web page that provides access to documents with keys explaining the symbols on historic and current USGS topographic maps. The pop-up also has a link to send Esri questions or comments about the map collection or the app.

We have shared the updated app on GitHub, so users can download it and configure it to work with their own map collections.

    Description

This Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) compliant Web Map Service (WMS) includes a mosaic of historical USGS topographic maps of New Jersey surveyed from 1881 to 1924. This product is to be used for reference purposes only. The original historical paper maps were distorted or damaged to varying degrees due to age and use. During visual testing, it appeared that spatial inaccuracies in the images exceed 200 feet in several locations. The digital product has not been corrected for distortion nor vertical displacement. Consequently, this product does not meet the National Standard for Spatial Data Accuracy (NSSDA). The mosaic was produced by scanning 15 minute (1:62,500 scale) historical USGS topographic paper maps at 600 dpi and saving them as Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) images. The scanned TIFFs have an approximate pixel resolution of 17 feet. The map images were georeferenced to a fishnet in their native coordinate system and then reprojected to NAD83 NJ State Plane coordinates for use in this service. In most client software, the default spatial reference system of the service will be Geographic Coordinates, WGS84. Several other coordinate systems are supported natively by the WMS (see Supplemental Information).

    Description

These are military topographic maps (scale 1:25,000) from the years 1944, series GSGS 4427 and GSGS 4414 (GSGS = Geographical Section General Staff). During the Second World War, maps of strategically located areas in the occupied territories were produced on the initiative of the American Army Map Service (AMS) in Washington DC and the British War Office in London. The work of the military services includes maps of cities and map series of France, Belgium and the Netherlands, among others. This includes the map series "Holland, 1:25.000" which was known to the Americans under the code AMS M831 and to the British under the code GSGS 4427. The 215 sheets in series GSGS 4427 contain most of the Netherlands, and were published in 1943. , 1944 or 1945 printed. From series GSGS 4414 there are 263 maps of the eastern part of the Netherlands and a large part of Germany. Older sheets available in Washington DC and London were used to make the maps. Sometimes it was even necessary to refer to information printed by the Dutch Topographical Service from the end of the nineteenth century. If the Allies had more recent magazines, they were of course used. In most cases, information was taken from map sheets from the 1920s and 1930s. In addition, information was also taken from, for example, Michelin maps and map sheets of the Koninklijke Nederlandsche Automobiel Club (KNAC).

    Description

This topographic map index is a finding aid for Ontario sheets of the 1:25,000 series of Historical Topographic Maps of Canada. This series was produced between 1956 and 1977, and includes over 600 individual topographic map sheets for the Province of Ontario. Maps cover mostly populated and border regions, and show both natural and man-made features such as relief, spot heights, administrative boundaries, roads, railways, trails, waterways, bridges, buildings, mills, power lines, terrain, and land formations.

Once this index is added to the map, clicking on the index tiles will indicate the topographic map coverage. This allows early topographic maps to be found based on regions of interest. When a tile is selected, this search box will populate with all relevant maps that include coverage of the selected area, in chronological order. Maps can then be viewed on the map sheet, downloaded, or explained in greater detail.

Content advisory: The topographic maps on this site are historical documents that reflect the time and environment in which they were created. Some maps may contain place names and other terms that may be racist, offensive, or derogatory. Many of these place names have been officially rescinded in the years since the creation of the maps, and the Geographic Names Board of Canada, along with provincial naming authorities, continue the ongoing work of removing offensive place names from the Canadian Geographical Names Database (CGNDB). For historical and research purposes, we offer access to these maps in their complete original and unchanged form with the intention of representing Canada’s history of racial and colonial discrimination, and the ensuing legacy of this harm. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please contact us at topomaps@scholarsportal.info.

The Historical Map and Chart Collection of the Office of Coast Survey contains over 20000 historical maps and charts from the mid 1700s through the late 1900s. These images are available for viewing or download through the image catalog at https://historicalcharts.noaa.gov/historicals/search . The Collection includes some of the nation's earliest nautical charts, hydrographic surveys, topographic surveys, geodetic surveys, city plans and Civil War battle maps. The Collection is a rich primary historical archive and a testament to the artistry of copper plate engraving technology of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Notable offerings include maps of Vancouver's explorations, the "Wilkes Atlas" of the U.S. Whistler's Anacapa Island chart, an extensive Civil War collection, a large scale topographic series of Washington, D.C., city plans, the reengraving of the famous 1792 L'Enfant and Ellicott plan for Washington D.C., and many artistic perspective sketches that were once an integral part of hydrographic surveys and published charts.

This tile service is derived from a digital raster graphic of the historical 15-minute USGS topographic quadrangle maps of coastal towns in Massachusetts. These quadrangles were mosaicked together to create a single data layer of the coast of Massachusetts and a large portion of the southeastern area of the state. The Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (CZM) obtained the map images from the Harvard Map Collection. The maps were produced in the late 1890s and early 20th century at a scale of 1:62,500 or 1:63,360 and are commonly known as 15-minute quadrangle maps because each map covers a four-sided area of 15 minutes of latitude and 15 minutes of longitude.

    Description

The R502 series of maps has been replaced by the National Topographic Map Series (NTMS). The R502 series consists of 542 map sheets and covers Australia at a scale of 1:250,000. It was compiled from aerial photography, but only about one quarter of the series was contoured. The standard sheet size is 1 degree of latitude by 1.5 degrees of longitude. Transverse Mercator map projection and Clark 1858 datum were used. Coverage of the country was completed in 1968.

    Description

The topographic map on a scale of 1:10,000 is the basic scale of Brandenburg's topographical maps. The earth's surface is relatively complete (only slightly generalized) and geometrically exact to scale. It is the cartographic implementation of a comprehensive topographical survey of the country (photogrammetric aerial image evaluation, incorporation of topographical additional information, topographical field comparison). The historical editions of the TK10 are available from different years from 1992 (basic up-to-dateness of individual sheets older). From 2002, the TK10 (ATKIS) was created by deriving from the basic landscape model (basic DLM). In different map layouts and representations, the historical map sheets depict a piece of Brandenburg's contemporary history. They are available in analogue plot output (paper) and are available free of charge as downloads. When using the data, the license conditions must be observed.
