This dataset depicts a national map of available ASS mapping and ASS qualification inferred from surrogate datasets. ASS mapping is classified with a nationally consistent legend that includes risk assessment criteria and correlations between Australian and International Soil Classification Systems.
Existing digital datasets of ASS mapping have been sourced from each coastal state and territory and combined into a single national dataset. Original state classifications have been translated to a common national classification system by the respective creators of the original data and other experts. This component of the Atlas is referred to as the “Coastal” ASS mapping. The remainder of Australia beyond the extent of state ASS mapping has been “backfilled” with a provisional ASS classification inferred from national and state soils, hydrography and landscape coverages. This component is referred to as the “Inland” ASS mapping.
For the state Coastal ASS mapping, the mapping scale of source data ranges from 1:10K aerial photography in SA to 1:250K vegetation mapping in WA and NT, with most East coast mapping being at the 1:100K scale. For the backfilled inferred Inland ASS mapping the base scale is 1:2.5 million (except Tas.) overlaid with 1:250k hydography. As at 06/08, the Tasmanian inland mapping has been re-modelled using superior soil classification map derived from 1:100k landscape unit mapping.
NOTE: This is composite data layer sourced from best available data with polygons depicted at varying scales and classified with varying levels of confidence. Great care must be taken when interpreting this map and particular attention paid to the “map scale” and confidence rating of a given polygon. It is stressed that polygons rated with Confidence = 4 are provisional classifications inferred from surrogate data with no on ground verification. Also some fields contain a “-“, denoting that a qualification was not able to be made, usually because a necessary component of source mapping coverage did not extend to the given polygon. Existing state CASS mapping was received and processed to varying degrees to conform to the NatCASS national ASS classification system. Spatially, all datasets were reprojected from their original projections to geographic GDA94. Classification of state mapping polygons to the NatCASS classification system was as follows. In the case of SA, NSW, Qld and WA it was a matter of directly translating the original state ASS classifications to the NatCASS classifications. These translations were undertaken by the creators of the state data and other experts within the respective states.
Due to the more broad classifications of the original Vic and Tas ASS mapping, polygons for these two states were initially translated to a NatCASS classification group (eg Tidal, Non-Tidal) by the data custodians then subsequently differentiated further through intersecting with other layers. These included the 3 second SRTM DEM and North Coast Mangrove mapping GIS datasets. The former being used to differentiate within the Non-Tidal zones (ie classes Ae-j and Be-j) and the latter used to differentiate the Tidal zones (ie Ab-d, Bb-d).
Mapping of the Tidal-Zone classes was augmented for all states except SA and NSW with 1:100K Coastal Waterways Geomorphic Habitat Mapping (Geoscience Australia). This dataset was used to infer additional areas of subaqueous material in subtidal wetland (class Aa & Ba) and Intertidal Flats (class Ab & Bb).
Inland ASS component:
Provisional Inland ASS classifications are derived from National and (in the case of Tasmania) state soil classification coverages combined with 1:250K series 3 Hydrography and Multiresolution Valley Bottom Floor Index (MrVBF).

The Surface Geology of Australia 1:1M scale dataset (2012 edition) is a seamless national coverage of outcrop and surficial geology, compiled for use at or around 1:1 million scale. The data maps outcropping bedrock geology and unconsolidated or poorly consolidated regolith material covering bedrock. Geological units are represented as polygon and line geometries, and are attributed with information regarding stratigraphic nomenclature and hierarchy, age, lithology, and primary data source. The dataset also contains geological contacts, structural features such as faults and shears, and miscellaneous supporting lines like the boundaries of water and ice bodies. The 2012 dataset has been updated from the previous 2010 data by updating geological unit data to 2012 information in the Australian Stratigraphic Units Database (http://www.ga.gov.au/products-services/data-applications/reference-databases/stratigraphic-units.html), incorporating new published mapping in the Northern Territory and Queensland, and correcting errors or inconsistent data identified in the previous edition, particularly in the Phanerozoic geology of Western Australia. The attribute structure of the dataset has also been revised to be more compatible with the GeoSciML data standard, published by the IUGS Commission for Geoscience Information. The first edition of this national dataset was first released in 2008, with map data compiled largely from simplifying and edgematching existing 1:250 000 scale geological maps. Where these maps were not current, more recent source maps ranging in scale from 1:50 000 to 1:1 million were used. In some areas where the only available geological maps were old and poorly located, some repositioning of mapping using recent satellite imagery or geophysics was employed.

The population grid is created by reaggregating estimated resident population data from Statistical Areas Level 1 (SA1) to a 1 km x 1 km grid across Australia based on point data representing residential address points. The value of each grid cell represents the estimated population density (number of people per square kilometre) within each 1 km x 1 km grid cell.
SA1 boundaries are defined by the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) Edition 3 (2021) and the 1 km x 1 km grid is based on the National Nested Grid.

This service contains the NATMAP 1:250,000 scale maps, from the NATMAP Digital Maps 2008 DVD. The large scale single mosaic map covers the entire continent, and is based on the Geocentric Datum of Australia 1994 (GDA94) geographic projection. The maps have been revised using a variety of data sources, including SPOT and Landsat satellite imagery, other government agency information and data supplied by private companies and individuals. The original DVD was produced by Geoscience Australia's National Mapping Division and its predecessor, the Australian Surveying and Land Information Group (AUSLIG).

The Queensland map lite web service is designed for use as a stand-alone product suitable for on-demand mapping. It is a full colour traditional tourist style map similar to hardcopy maps. The service is based on data acquired and collated by the Department of Resources, Queensland for more than thirty years. 1:10Million - The key source for production of the Builtup Areas, Drainage, Framework, Localities, Rail Transport, Road Transport and Waterbodies layers was the GEODATA TOPO 250K Series 1 product. Some revision of the Builtup Areas, Road Transport, Rail Transport and Waterbodies layers was carried out using the latest available satelite imagery. The primary source for the Spot Heights, Contours and Offshore layers was the GEODATA TOPO 10M Version 1 product. A further element to the production of GEODATA TOPO 10M 2002 has been the datum shift from the Australian Geodetic Datum 1966 (AGD66) to the Geocentric Datum of Australia 1994 (GDA94).

The eAtlas delivers its mapping products via two Web Mapping Services, a legacy server (from 2008-2011) and a newer primary server (2011+) to which all new content it added. This record describes the legacy WMS.
This service delivers map layers associated with the eAtlas project (http://eatlas.org.au), which contains map layers of environmental research focusing on the Great Barrier Reef. The majority of the layers corresponding to Glenn De'ath's interpolated maps of the GBR developed under the MTSRF program (2008-2010).
This web map service is predominantly maintained for the legacy eAtlas map viewer (http://maps.eatlas.org.au/geoserver/www/map.html). All the these legacy map layers are available through the new eAtlas mapping portal (http://maps.eatlas.org.au), however the legends have not been ported across.
This WMS is implemented using GeoServer version 1.7 software hosted on a server at the Australian Institute of Marine Science.
For ArcMap use the following steps to add this service: 1. "Add Data" then choose GIS Servers from the "Look in" drop down. 2. Click "Add WMS Server" then set the URL to "http://maps.eatlas.org.au/geoserver/wms?"

The 1:2.5M scale geology of Australia data documents the distribution and age of major stratigraphic, intrusive and medium to high-grade metamorphic rock units of onshore Australia. This edition contains the same spatial content as the previous edition, but its geological attribute data is more complete than the 2010 edition. The dataset was compiled to use at scales between 1:2.5 million and 1:5 million inclusive. The units distinguished/mapped mainly represent stratigraphic supergroups, regional intrusive associations and regional metamorphic complexes. Groupings of Precambrian units in the time-space diagram are generally separated by major time breaks; Phanerozoic units are grouped according to stratigraphic age i.e. System/Period. The time-space diagram has the added benefit that it provides a summary of units currently included on the themes. The method used to distinguish sedimentary and many volcanic units varies for each geological eon as follows: - Cainozoic units are morphological units which emphasise the relationship of the sedimentary fill to the landscape. - Mesozoic units are regionally extensive to continent-wide time-rock units which emphasise the System of Period(s). - Paleozoic units are stratotectonic units that emphasise either the dominant System or Period(s) or the range of Periods. - Proterozoic units are commonly regional stratotectonic units - separated by major time breaks and split into the Paleoproterozoic, Mesoproterozoic and Neoproterozoic Eras - which are generally unique to each cratonic region. - Archaean units are regional lithological units grouped into broad time divisions. Metamorphic units are lithological units which emphasise the metamorphic facies and timing of the last major metamorphic event.

The Australian Topographic web map service is seamless national dataset coverage for the whole of Australia. These data are best suited to graphical applications. These data may vary greatly in quality depending on the method of capture and digitising specifications in place at the time of capture. The web map service portrays detailed graphic representation of features that appear on the Earth's surface. These features include the administration boundaries from the Geoscience Australia 250K Topographic Data, including state forest and reserves.

Statistical Area Level 2 (SA2s) are medium-sized general purpose areas built up from whole Statistical Area Level 1 (SA1s). Most SA2s have a population range of 3,000 to 25,000 people. Their purpose is to represent a community that interacts together socially and economically. SA2s are generally the smallest areas used for the release of ABS non-Census of Population and Housing statistics, including Estimated Resident Population and Health and Vitals data. Whole SA2s aggregate to form Statistical Area Level 3 (SA3s). Digital data is provided for the indexes of: - 1:100,000 scale topographic maps - 1:250,000 scale topographic maps - 1:1,000,000 scale General Reference maps
These indexes are those used in the online map index dashboards and web maps. They contain value-add attributes, including map number, map name, map title, year published, the latitude and longitude of the extents of the maps sheets and data tiles covering Australia. They also include a link to download the map.
