Data Dictionary

    dataset_id - Identifier assigned to the item by ArcGIS Hub. For items based on a feature service this is a combination of the ArcGIS Online id and the layer number of the feature layer in the associated service. Format [agol_id]_[layer number].

    item_id - ArcGIS Online identifier associated with the item

    slug - Easy-to-read identifier for the dataset used in URLs

    url_dataset_id - Complete URL to the item using the dataset_id

    url_slug - Complete URL to the item using the slug

    item_tile - Item title

    snippet - Short description of the item

    item_type - ArcGIS Hub item type

    site - The site that the item resides in. Possible values: 'Ontario GeoHub' or 'CarrefourGéo Ontario'

    metadata_lang - Language of the metadata based on mdLang tag in metadata record

    detected_lang - Language of the metadata based on detection of the title and description using Google Translate libraries

    tags - ArcGIS Online tags associated with the item

    grp_name - Name of the Open Data Group through which this item was shared to ArcGIS Hub

    grp_id - Identifier of the Open Data Group through which this item was shared to ArcGIS Hub

    grp_owner - Name of the ArcGIS Online organization that owns the Open Data Group

    dataset_id_eng - The dataset_id of the related English record in Ontario GeoHub. Only applies to records where site = 'CarrefourGéo Ontario'

    dataset_id_fre - The dataset_id of the the related French record in CarrefourGeo Ontario. Only applied to records where site = 'Ontario GeoHub'

Built-Up Areas are man-made land cover features, ranging from small hamlets at rural cross roads to large cities.

This file geodatabase consists of all publicly available (Open) products extracted from the Land Information Ontario (LIO) Warehouse excluding Wetlands, Contours and OHN products. This data represents the data housed in the LIO Warehouse as of the date the extraction occurred. The file geodatabase will be refreshed on a bi-weekly basis and has been prepared as a convenience to users wanting access to all LIO Warehouse Open Data products in file geodatabase structure. This is a link to the 2010 South Western Ontario Orthophotography Project (SWOOP) imagery. This link will take you to the Ontario geoHub's web map service. SWOOP imagery is owned by the province, if you have any questions please direct them to the contact of the Ontario geoHub.

This data covers the entire Far North from 2005-2011. The data is provided in both grid and vector formats. It is broken into layers that cover UTM zones 15, 16 and 17. Layers representing each level of the classification hierarchy described in the data specs have been provided: * class * group * section Can be used to create a consistent map to meet regional - to landscape level analysis (1:100,000).

Watercourses are line features – natural or manmade – that represent the location of flowing surface water.*Due to limitations of the shapefile format, OHN Watercourse data can only be downloaded as a complete shapefile or file geodatabase. The LIO Topographic Data Cache is a collection of topographic data, that has been preprocessed for fast, seamless display at predefined scales. The topographic data includes constructed and natural features that make up Ontario’s landscape. The cache provides limited data from areas outside Ontario’s boundaries, such as the United States and adjacent provinces and territories. Technical information Two versions of the LIO Topographic Data Cache are available: 1. The traditional raster version is available for a variety of GIS applications and is updated annually. 2. The vector version is suitable for online web map applications as well as modern GIS software and is updated twice a year. Contributing data layers may have different maintenance and update cycles. Some cache layers have been processed in a way that makes it easier for them to be displayed in a mapping product. Other layers are unchanged from the authoritative data. The cartographic symbology used in the data cache is intentionally muted to allow users to showcase their data. The LIO Topographic Data Cache is created from many source datasets, which are described in the LIO Topographic Data Cache user guide. If you are interested in getting this authoritative data, you can download it from the Ontario GeoHub. Ontario Land Cover (OLC) is a primary data layer. It provides a comprehensive, standardized, landscape level inventory of Ontario’s natural, rural and anthropogenic (human made) features.

The Geographic Names Ontario (Geonames) data set contains names and locations of geographic features and unincorporated places that have been officially named in Ontario, for identification and labelling purposes. It includes additional geographical referencing information:

This layer used to be distributed under the name "Geographic Name Extent" but was modified to "Geographic Named Extent" in November 2011.

Often these parcels were surveyed before township surveys in their area. They may also be supplemental to them (as is the case with some Cadastral Islands). Sometimes these were laid out after a township survey was done, so some may be part of a geographic township. Cadastral Location includes the following: GTP Block - Timber block used by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway for feeding steam engines, building bridges, and for supplying railway ties. Mining Location - A parcel of land whose surveyed boundaries were laid out during the late nineteenth century for the Crown sale of land for mining purposes to groups or individuals. Cadastral Island - Island delineated on survey plans. It may or may not be part of a geographic township. Other Location - A parcel of land whose surveyed boundaries were laid out during the late nineteenth century for the Crown sale of land for various agricultural or farming purposes to groups or individuals. These locations are mainly found in Northern Ontario and also exist in the un-surveyed territories.

Rivers included in this map series include:

• Attawapiskat

The maps display gauging systems such as cost share agreement gauges, Water Survey of Canada gauging stations and Meteorological Survey of Canada Climate stations. Dams, their jurisdictional owners and Far North First Nations communities are included.

The Digital Surface Models (DSM) are raster elevation products that were generated from the elevation point clouds created via pixel-correlation from aerial photography. A DSM is the highest reflective surface of ground features captured by the sensor. This surface may also be referred to as the first reflective surface. The DSM may include treetops, rooftops, and tops of towers, telephone poles, and other natural or artificial features; or it may include the ground surface if there is no vegetative ground cover.

Now also available through a web service which exposes the data for visualization, geoprocessing and limited download. The service is best accessed through the ArcGIS REST API, either directly or by setting up an ArcGIS server connection using the REST endpoint URL. The service draws using the Web Mercator projection.

The Ontario Point Cloud (Lidar-Derived) consists of points containing elevation and intensity information derived from returns collected by an airborne topographic lidar sensor. The point cloud is structured into non-overlapping 1 km by 1 km tiles in LAZ format. The following classification codes are applied to the data: * unclassified * ground * water * high noise * low noise This dataset is a compilation of lidar data from multiple acquisition projects, so specifications, parameters, accuracy and sensors may vary by project. This data is for geospatial tech specialists, and is used by government, municipalities, conservation authorities and the private sector for land use planning and environmental analysis. Related data: Raster derivatives have been created from the point clouds. These products may meet your needs and are available for direct download. For a representation of bare earth, see the Ontario Digital Terrain Model (Lidar-Derived). For a model representing all surface features, see the Ontario Digital Surface Model (Lidar-Derived).

In southern Ontario the contour interval is 5 meters. In the near north the contour interval is 10 meters. In the Far North the contour interval depends on the information source.

Wetlands are lands that are seasonally or permanently flooded by shallow water, as well as lands where the water table is close to or at the surface. In either case, the presence of abundant water has caused the formation of hydric (moist) soils and has favoured the dominance of either hydrophytic (water-loving) or water tolerant plants.The term wetland is a general one and includes specific land types commonly called marshes, bogs, swamps and fens. Other terms sometimes used to describe wetlands include mires, sloughs and peatlands.Periodically soaked or wetlands being used for agricultural purposes that no longer exhibit wetland characteristics are not considered to be wetlands for the purposes of this definition.Wetland polygons are mapped independently from other hydrographic data classes and may overlap water bodies or other hydrographic data.Not all wetlands have been identified and mapped. Active maintenance is ongoing province-wide.Evaluators using the Ontario Wetland Evaluation System (OWES) will find additional guidance on the Ontario Wetlands evaluation page.For user friendly viewing of the wetland data, navigate to Ontario’s Make a Natural Heritage Map web application.
