    Description

The refugee location data (Geo-Refugee) provides information on the geographical locations, population sizes and accommodation types of refugees and people in refugee-like situations throughout Africa. Based on the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees' Location and Demographic Composition data as well as information contained in supplemental UNHCR resources, Geo-Refugee assigns administrative unit names and geographic coordinates to refugee camps/ centers, and locations hosting dispersed (self-settled) refugees. Geo-Refugee was collected for the purpose of investigating the relationship between refugees and armed conflict, but can be used for a number of refugee-related studies. The original data for the category refugees and people in a refugee-like situation by accommodation type and location name comes directly from the UNHCR. The category refugees includes: "individuals recognized under the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and its 1967 Protocol; the 1969 OAU Convention Governing the Specific Aspects of Refugee Problems in Africa; those recognized in accordance with the UNHCR statute; individuals granted complementary forms of protection and those enjoying temporary protection. The category people in a refugee-like situation "is descriptive in nature and includes groups of people who are outside their country of origin and who face protection risks similar to those of refugees, but for whom refugee status has, for practical or other reasons, not been ascertained" (UNHCR http://www.unhcr.org/45c06c662.html). The unit of the data is the first-level administrative unit (province, region or state). A refugee location is defined as a unit with a known refugee population, as established by UNHCR country offices. The locations data was compiled using statistics provided by the UNHCR Division of Programme Support and Management. Several of the refugee sites in the original UNHCR data are camp names or other lo cations which are not immediately traceable to a particular location using even the most established geographical databases like that of the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA). Thus, unit-level location of refugees was established and confirmed using supplementary resources including reports, maps, and policy documents compiled by the UNHCR and contained in the Refworld database (see http://www.unhcr.org/cgi-bin/texis/vtx/refworld/rwmain). Refworld was the primary database used for this project. Geographic coordinates were assigned using the database of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. See https://www1.nga.mil/Pages/default.aspx for more information. All attempts were made to find precise coordinates, including cross-referencing with Google Maps. The current version of the data covers 43 African countries and encompasses the period 2000 to 2010. The UNHCR began systematically collecting information on the locations and demographic compositions of refugee populations in 2000.

    Description

    Abstract

The long-term presence of refugees in Chad and the reduction in funding to provide assistance in recent years have led the humanitarian community to reconsider the approach to assistance of these populations. WFP and UNHCR, the Government's main partners in providing assistance to refugees, had conducted a "socio-economic categorization" in 2014 and 2015 in some refugee camps, and an update was decided for 2017. This update was designed to go beyond a simple categorization and focuses on identifying profiles of refugee households that can be empowered in the short to medium term and the factors that can foster this empowerment. The assessment covers 87,724 refugee households in Chad and was carried out during June-August 2017.

    Geographic coverage

Areas hosting refugees in Chad. This includes 19 refugee camps and 9 villages.

    Analysis unit

    Household and individual

    Universe

All refugee households residing in Chad.

    UNHCR PPG: 1TCDA, 1TCDB, 1TCDD

    Kind of data

    Sample survey data [ssd]

    Sampling procedure

The survey's objective was to deliver representative data of all refugees living in Chad. The total population of refugees at the time of the survey was estimated at slightly below 90,000 households. These refugees were located in 19 refugee camps and 9 villages.

The survey applied a full-coverage (census) approach, i.e. no sample selection was made. The registration database served as the list frame. The total number of completed interviews was 87,724 households.

While the original data collection took a full-coverage approach, the public-release version of the dataset contains a systematically drawn sub-sample of this original data for reasons of statistical disclosure control. The total sample size in the dataset presented for public release is 8,772 households.

    Sampling deviation

    None.

    Mode of data collection

    Computer Assisted Personal Interview [capi]

    Research instrument

All questionaires are provided in section "external ressources".

    Cleaning operations

The dataset presented here has undergone light checking, cleaning and restructuring (data may still contain errors) as well as anonymization (includes removal of direct identifiers and sensitive variables, and grouping values of select variables). Moreover, it constitutes a sub-sample of the data originally collected.

    Response rate

    Information unavailable.

    Description

Data as of June 11, 2015. The "Syria Refugee Sites" dataset contains verified data about the geographic location (point geometry), name, and operational status of refugee sites hosting Syrian refugees in Turkey, Jordan, and Iraq. Only refugee sites operated by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) or the Government of Turkey are included. Compiled by the U.S Department of State, Humanitarian Information Unit (INR/GGI/HIU), each attribute in the dataset (including name, location, and status) is verified against multiple sources. The name and status are obtained from the UNHCR data portal (accessible at http://data.unhcr.org/syrianrefugees/regional.php). The locations are obtained from the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM) and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency's GEOnet Names Server (GNS) (accessible at http://geonames.nga.mil/ggmagaz/). The name and status for each refugee site is verified with PRM. Locations are verified using high-resolution commercial satellite imagery and/or known areas of population. Additionally, all data is checked against various news sources. Locations are only accurate down to the city level. The designation field gives the type of site and the status of the site. Sites can be "Official Camps", camp settlements that are officially established and maintained by the United Nations or host country. Sites can also be "Transitional Camps", which is a typical camp structure but designed to be temporary or used on as needed basis. There can also be "Transitional Facilities"; these are facilities that are being used to temporarily house refugees. Status of these sites can be Planned, Under Construction, Staged, Open, or Closed. The data contained herein is entirely unclassified and is current as of 11 June 2015. The data is updated as needed.

    Description

    Abstract

The Vulnerability Assessment Framework (VAF) is a key tool used by humanitarian and development organizations in Jordan. It contributes to coherent vulnerability identification and programme delivery across sectors. . It was designed in 2014 with a focus on Syrian refugees residing outside of camps. This dataset collected between November and December 2021 presents the first efforts in expanding the scopes to the Zaatari and Azraq refugee camps. Residents of both Azraq and Zaatari camps were randomly sampled to explore trends and vulnerabilities specific to the camp context. As the questionnaire was first used to collect the data in the urban setting, it was tailored for the refugee camps context to account for the camp residents’ living circumstances, allowing for a deeper understanding of this specific group. A total of 10,141 individuals, representing 2,208 families living in 1,620 households, were interviewed in person.

    Geographic coverage

    Azraq and Zaatari camps

    Analysis unit

    Household, Case (family), Individual

    Kind of data

    Sample survey data [ssd]

    Sampling procedure

In order to ensure that the sample is representative of the refugee population living in both camps, a stratified random sampling method was used, with two strata: Azraq and Zaatari. Random sampling aims to reduce selection bias and ensure that our respondents have the same characteristics as the entire population on average. A random sample of families was selected for each camp using UNHCR's ProGres registration database. This sample was then proportionally distributed across the villages in Azraq and districts in Zaatari. Even though sampling was conducted at the family unit, all members in the household were interviewed, including other cases/families living in the same household, and individuals pending registration with UNHCR

    Mode of data collection

    Face-to-face [f2f]

    Research instrument

Questionnaire contained the following sections: Household Demographics, Shelter, WASH, Consumption and Expenditure6, COVID-19 KAP7, Financial Situation, Health, Education, Livelihoods, and Child Labour.

    Abstract

Between February and March 2021, UNHCR and WFP undertook an assessment of refugees from South Sudan in the sites of Biringi (Ituri province), Bele and Meri (Haut Uélé province) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The objective of the assessment was to update the basic knowledge on the humanitarian needs of the whole South Sudanese refugee population in these sites to inform programmatic decisions and assess the relevance of a harmonized humanitarian targetting strategy based on level of vulnerability.

The assessment was carried out jointly by UNHCR and WFP. All refugee households in all sites were interviewed, consisting of 8,630 households. This dataset represents an anonymous version of the original dataset. A 20% random sample of the original dataset was drawn as part of the anonymization. The sample was stratified by site (Mele, Beri and Biringi). The variable survey_weight provide the final weights.

    Description

    Abstract

In 2014/2015, WFP and UNHCR, the Government's main partners in providing assistance to refugees, conducted a "socio-economic categorization" in select refugee camps in Chad. This dataset covers a total of 12,643 households in the Gozamir and Belom refugee camps.

Gozamir and Belom refugee camps, Chad

    Analysis unit

    Household and individual

    Universe

All refugee households residing in Gozamir and Belom refugee camps, Chad. UNHCR PPG: 1TCDA, 1TCDB

    Kind of data

    Sample survey data [ssd]

    Sampling procedure

The survey's objective was to deliver representative data of all refugees living in Chad's Gozamir and Belom refugee camps. The total population of refugees in these camps at the time of the survey was estimated at slightly below 13,000 households.

The survey applied a full-coverage (census) approach, i.e. no sample selection was made. The registration database served as the list frame. The total number of completed interviews was 12,643 households (7,393 in Gozamir and 5,250 in Belom).

While the original data collection took a full-coverage approach, the public-release version of the dataset contains a systematically drawn sub-sample of this original data for reasons of statistical disclosure control. The total sample size in the dataset presented for public release is 2,528 households (1,478 in Gozamir and 1,050 in Belom).
