The NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) publishes Secondary Care Medicines Data on behalf of NHS England (NHSE). This dataset provides 'Provisional' Secondary Care Medicines data for all NHS Acute, Teaching, Specialist, Mental Health, and Community Trusts in England. It provides information on pharmacy stock control, reflecting processed medicines data. RX Info is responsible for refreshing the Provisional data at the close of each financial year to include backtracking adjustments. The data is 'Finalised' to provide validated and complete figures for each reporting period, incorporating any updates and corrections throughout the year. The Finalised dataset serves as the definitive record for each month and year, offering the most accurate information on medicines issued. While we do not analyse changes, users can compare the finalised data with provisional data to identify any discrepancies. Key Components of the Data Quantities of Medicines Issued: Details the total quantities of medicines stock control via NHS Secondary Care services. Indicative Costs: Actual costs cannot be displayed in the dataset as NHS Hospital pricing contracts and NICE Patient Access Schemes are confidential. The indicative cost of medicines is derived from current medicines pricing data held in NHSBSA data systems (Common Drug Reference and dm+d), calculated to VMP level. Indicative costs are calculated using: Community pharmacy reimbursement prices for generic medicines. List prices for branded medicines. Care should be taken when interpreting and analysing this indicative cost as it does not reflect the net actual cost of NHS Trusts, which will differ due to the application of confidential discounts, rebates, or procurement agreements paid by hospitals when purchasing medicines. Standardisation with SNOMED CT and dm+d: SNOMED CT (Systematised Nomenclature of Medicine - Clinical Terms) is used to enhance the dataset’s compatibility with electronic health record systems and clinical decision support tools. SNOMED CT is a globally recognised coding system that provides precise definitions for clinical terms, ensuring interoperability across healthcare systems. Trust-Level Data: Data is broken down by individual NHS Trusts, enabling regional comparisons, benchmarking, and targeted analysis of specific Trusts. Medicine Identification: Medicines in the dataset are identified using Virtual Medicinal Product (VMP) codes from the Dictionary of Medicines and Devices (dm+d): VMP_PRODUCT_NAME: The name of the Virtual Medicinal Product (VMP) as defined by the dm+d, which includes key details about the product. For example: Paracetamol 500mg tablets. VMP_SNOMED_CODE: The code for the Virtual Medicinal Product (VMP), providing a unique identifier for each product. For example: 42109611000001109 represents Paracetamol 500mg tablets. You can access the finalised files in our Finalised Secondary Care Medicines Data (SCMD) with indicative price dataset.

NHS Prescription Services process prescriptions for Pharmacy Contractors, Appliance Contractors, Dispensing Doctors and Personal Administration with information then used to make payments to pharmacists and appliance contractors in England for prescriptions dispensed in primary care settings (other arrangements are in place for making payments to Dispensing Doctors and Personal Administration). This involves processing over 1 billion prescription items and payments totalling over £9 billion each year. The information gathered from this process is then used to provide information on costs and trends in prescribing in England and Wales to over 25,000 registered NHS and Department of Health and Social Care users. Data Source NHSBSA MDR organisation data base and Provider Assurance Time Period Current as of 03/06/2024 Organisation Data The data shows a list of Open (active) pharmacies currently registered on MDR, together with their ODS Code, registered business name, address, postcode and associated Local Pharmaceutical (LPC) Name. Please note- not all pharmacies listed have an associated LPC registered. In those cases, it is likely that the Integrated Care Board (ICB) in which the pharmacy is located is yet to confirm an associated LPC with the NHSBSA. Email addresses have been provided where these are held by the NHSBSA.

The BNF Code is a 15-digit code in which the first seven digits are allocated according to the categories in the BNF and the last 8 digits represent the medicinal product, form, strength and the link to the generic equivalent product. NHS Prescription Services has created pseudo BNF chapters, which are not published, for items not included in BNF chapters 1 to 15. The majority of such items are dressings and appliances which NHS Prescription Services has classified into four pseudo BNF chapters (20 to 23). Items Items shows the number of times a product appears on a prescription form not the quantity prescribed. Total Quantity Total quantity is the number of items multiplied by the quantity prescribed. e.g. 2 items prescribed, one with a quantity of 2 and one with a quantity of 3, the total quantity would show as 5 (1 item x quantity of 2) + (1 item x quantity of 3). Net Ingredient Cost (NIC(£)) Net Ingredient cost (NIC) is the basic price of a drug as stated in Part II Clause 8 of the Drug Tariff but please note that where a price concession for items listed in Part VIII of the Drug Tariff has been agreed between the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee the NIC will reflect the concession price rather than the Drug Tariff price. Data Queries If you have any queries regarding the data provided, or if you plan on publishing, the data please contact foirequests@nhsbsa.nhs.uk ensuring you quote the above reference. The data source was the NHSBSA Information Services Data Warehouse. Exclusions The Data excludes: • Items not dispensed, disallowed and those returned to the contractor for further clarification. • Prescriptions prescribed and dispensed in Prisons, Hospitals and Private prescriptions. • Items prescribed but not presented for dispensing or not submitted to NHS Prescription Services by the dispenser. Please note data for drugs flagged in our database as Schedule 2 and 3 controlled drugs have been excluded from this dataset for physical security reasons to prevent the identification of organisations with high levels of controlled drug dispensing. This may mean that the data in this FOI may differ from the published data in the report above, for example summing NIC for the time period may differ due to the excluded controlled drugs. The time period covered is for April 2022. Prescribing limited to prescribing organisations in England marked as hospitals (this matches the published data in the above link). No limitations on dispensing organisation No limits on prescribed products Items
There is a completed file for each month. FOI8592 has 2 files (February 2019 and March 2019) Source System – ISP (National MIS Files) NHSBSA Prescription Services process prescriptions for Pharmacy Contractors, Appliance Contractors, Dispensing Doctors and Personal Administration with information then used to make payments to pharmacists and appliance contractors in England for prescriptions dispensed in primary care settings (other arrangements are in place for making payments to Dispensing Doctors and Personal Administration). This involves processing over 1 billion prescription items and payments totalling over £9 billion each year. The information gathered from this process is then used to provide information on costs and trends in prescribing in England and Wales to over 25,000 registered NHS and Department of Health and Social Care users. This report consists of a management information file detailing monthly Community Pharmacy and Appliance Payments by type of payment and contractor account. Payments include all drug costs, fees, patient charges, locally authorised payments, etc. Other details such as the numbers of items dispensed, patient’s charges collected are also included. The management information file reflects the contractor's payment and prescription data associated with the sustainability and transformation partnerships (STPs) structure at the relevant payment date. The data contained within the files can be interpreted correctly by using the ‘MIS Glossary’ available under ‘Management Information Spreadsheet (MIS) Report’ at https://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/information-services-portal-isp/isp-report-information . The data in column METHADONE PAYMT and ADD FEE-2E within the Pharmacy dataset have been removed following Information Governance policy. Appliance Contractors data within the MIS- Report shows data for the following month. (E.g. MIS-Report for January 19 will show February 19 Appliance Contractor data). I am looking to make a second freedom of information request today for the purpose of academic research. The information I seek relates to NHS dental activity data. Please find attached an Excel spreadsheet that lays out the information that I seek. Please also see this below as a list. Time period For each financial year since FY 2011/12 until the most recently completed financial year of 2022/3 Geographical areas For each lower tier local authority (i.e. the 317 single tier local authorities) Data In each local authority and in each financial year, I seek: the total number of UNIQUE 0 year old patients presenting for NHS primary care the total number of UNIQUE 1-17-year-old patients presenting for NHS primary care Response A copy of the information is attached. Guidance Notes: This report contains the details from FP17s processed in the Reporting Years 2014/2015 - 2022/2023, for Patients resident in English & Welsh Local Authorities. The information within the report includes the data items and descriptions listed below. Foundation Dentist activity included. Reporting Year: The financial year which the activity relates to. Year-end methodology will include all activity data (including amendments) collected from FP17s scheduled in any of the fifteen schedule months from April to June, where the date of completion is on or between 1 April and 31 March of the year. For example 2019-20 will include all activity data (including amendments) collected from FP17s scheduled in any of the fifteen schedule months from April 2019 to June 2020, where the date of completion is on or between 1 April 2019 and 31 March 2020. Where FP17s do not have a date of completion, e.g. where the patient has failed to return to complete the treatment, the date of acceptance is used. Patient Local Authority Name: The local authority name in which the patient is resident, irrespective of where treatment took place. Based on the home postcode recorded in the personal details section of each FP17 submitted, therefore is dependent on this information being included and accurate in the records. This is not dependent on where the patient received treatment, so can either be in or outside the PCO. Unique Patient Count: This is a count of the unique patient identities on forms scheduled. A patient may have attended more than once in the time period and received different treatment, so the total figure has been adjusted for duplicate patient IDs. Patient identities are counted for all valid FP17 transactions – including amendment, deletion and withdrawn records. Therefore, it is possible for the count of patient identities to be greater than the count of FP17s. Unique Patient Count (Aged X-X): A measure, which describes the Unique Patient Count for patients Aged X-X at date of acceptance. Note: We only hold data back to 2014/15 and 2022/23 is incomplete as technically contractors have util June 2023 to submit forms for treatment provided between 1st April 2022 to 31st March 2023 Please note that this request and our response is published on our Freedom of Information disclosure log at:
