This map depicts features within Orange County that are used as sources of drinking water. Water supply watersheds were created by the Orange County Department of Planning from a 2-foot digital elevation model (DEM) provided by the NYS Office of Information Technology Services GIS Program Office. This map depicts major watersheds and sub-watersheds as represented in the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Watershed Boundary Dataset (2016). Major watersheds are defined as 10-digit hydrologic unit codes and sub-watersheds are defined as 12-digit hydrologic unit codes.
The displayed data is based off major projects reviewed by the Orange County Planning Department, as per NYS General Municipal Law 239-m & n, from January 2016 through June 2021. The thresholds for each category differ based on their potential for intermunicipal or countywide impacts to traffic, water resources and/or other natural resources, as well as local knowledge for potential externalities related to the impact on intrinsic resources of the communities in which they are proposed.
