OS VectorMap Local Backdrop Colour Raster is a GeoTiff, pre-styled backdrop colour version of the OS VectorMap Local vector dataset at a nominal scale of 1:10000 covering the whole of Great Britain that has been designed for creating graphical mapping. The product can be used as mapping in its own right or can be used to provide a flexible geographic context reference for customers’ overlay information.

OS VectorMap District is a simple vector dataset with a nominal scale of 1:25000 covering the whole of Great Britain that has been designed for creating graphical mapping. The product can be used as mapping in its own right or can be used to provide a flexible geographic context reference for customers’ overlay information. As well as the vector dataset, a number of output styles are suggested. The main characteristics of the dataset is represention of real world features (e.g. roads, railways, buildings blocks, vegetation and boundaries) as points, lines, polygons, and text.

As of the July 2021 basemap update, the raster basemaps (OS Open Carto, Background, Greyscale and Greyscale Labels) have now entered Mature Support. These four services will no longer be updated but will remain available to use for the foreseeable future. We encourage users to switch to the new GB Vector Basemaps. The OS VML MM 'Carto' base map is designed to be used as background mapping providing a seamless map view from small to large scales with a consistent cartographic representation.

The sources of data are Ordnance Survey Vector Map District data for small and mid-scales, and Vector Map Local & MasterMap for the largest scales.

The currency of the data is; Vector Map District -11/2017 Vector Map Local - 04/2018 MasterMap - 03/2018

The coverage of the map service is GB.

The map projection is British National Grid.

The map service is cached down to 1:500, but can be viewed at an additional level of detail at 1:250 scale.

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) holds copies of Ordnance Survey (OS) basemaps for the whole of Wales, in paper and digital format. NRW obtain much of it's OS data, initially, as part of the Public Sector Mapping Agreement (PSMA) and from 2020 as part of the Public Sector Geospatial Agreement (PSGA), which is a collective agreement between OS and the government.

Roads are depicted in two ways in OS VectorMap Local:Road alignments: these approximate to the road centre lines and have a number of classifications eachof which can be separately identified by feature code and feature description. Where there is a road name and/or a road number these are held as attributes ofthe road alignment. Where a roadalignment passes under another road then the alignment is trimmedback 10 ground metres either side and 7 ground metres either side when it passes under a railway.These indicate bridges.Road casings: ‘General road casing’ FC15701 are the road extents that appear in the current1:10 000 Scale Raster and OS Landplan® products. They have a minimum width of 14 groundmetres.They can be used together, for example to put a colour fill into the standard casings, orindependently, for example, to show different classes of road with different widths or colours.

This data is often used for environmental monitoring and risk assessment, navigation, statistical analysis. OS Rivers Data includes freshwater rivers, tidal estuaries, lakes and canals as well as water flowing through aqueducts, tunnels and underground. Additional attribution, including name, type, height, flow direction, gradient, length, width and source is available in various OS data products. OS Rivers Data is supplied in a number of OS data products, including: OS MasterMap Water Network Layer, OS Open Rivers, OS MasterMap Topography Layer, VectorMap Local and VectorMap District. Small-scale cartographic representations are also availble in OS catpgraphic products. All data is collected by Ordnance Survey. Culvert data within OS MasterMap Water Network Layer is sourced from Scottish Local Authorities. as part of their role as the National Mapping Agency of Great Britain.

The project uses a machine learning approach to image classification, developed under the Defra Living Maps project (SD1705 – Kilcoyne et al., 2017). The method first clusters homogeneous areas of habitat into segments, then assigns each segment to a defined list of habitat classes using Random Forest (a machine learning algorithm). The habitat probability map displays modelled likely broad habitat classifications, trained on field surveys and earth observation data from 2021 as well as historic data layers. This map is an output from Phase IV of the Living England project, with future work in Phase V (2022-23) intending to standardise the methodology and Phase VI (2023-24) to implement the agreed standardised methods.The Living England habitat probability map will provide high-accuracy, spatially consistent data for a range of Defra policy delivery needs (e.g. 25YEP indicators and Environment Bill target reporting Natural capital accounting, Nature Strategy, ELM) as well as external users. As a probability map, it allows the extrapolation of data to areas that we do not have data. These data will also support better local and national decision making, policy development and evaluation, especially in areas where other forms of evidence are unavailable. Process Description: A number of data layers are used to inform the model to provide a habitat probability map of England. The main sources layers are Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-1 satellite data from the ESA Copericus programme. Additional datasets were incorporated into the model (as detailed below) to aid the segmentation and classification of specific habitat classes. Search area for riparian woodland, the zone is 20m either side of water courses.Underlying water courses are combination of OS open rivers, Vector Map District , SEPA open rivers, Open Street Map water courses. All are line datasets apart from Vector Map District which is a polygon dataset. Therefore the width of wider rivers has been taken into account(i.e. where they have been included in the vector map district dataset).
