The Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map (DFIRM) Database depicts flood risk information and supporting data used to develop the risk data. The primary risk classifications used are the 1-percent-annual-chance flood event, the 0.2-percent-annual- chance flood event, and areas of minimal flood risk. The DFIRM Database is derived from Flood Insurance Studies (FISs), previously published Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), flood hazard analyses performed in support of the FISs and FIRMs, and new mapping data, where available. The FISs and FIRMs are published by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The file is georeferenced to earth's surface using the Ohio North Stateplane projection and coordinate system. The specifications for the horizontal control of DFIRM data files are consistent with those required for mapping at scales of 1:6000 and 1:12,000.

TwitterObservations and subtle shifts of vegetation communities in western Lake Erie have USGS researchers concerned about the potential for Grass Carp to alter these vegetation communities. Broad-scale surveys of vegetation using remote sensing and GIS mapping, coupled with on-the-ground samples in key locations will permit assessment of the effect Grass Carp may have already had on aquatic vegetation communities and establish baseline conditions for assessing future effects. Existing aerial imagery was used with object-based image analysis to detect and map aquatic vegetation in the western basin of Lake Erie.

TwitterSUMMARYSurficial geologic mapping of Ottawa County, Michigan, was completed by the Michigan Geological Survey (MGS) during 2020 - 2022. This study was conducted to help address the growing issues concerning water supply and water quality, as well as aggregate resources within the county. Download .zipThis theme combines prime farmland ratings of the soils in Ottawa County with land use/ land cover information to determine which agricultural areas are prime farmlands. Soil ratings were provided by the USDA, Natural Resources Conservation Service
The soil coverage used in this analysis was digitized from the original paper soil survey sheets. These sheets were taped together to form an area covering each of the USGS quadrangle maps in the county. The areas for each quadrangle were then digitized using a run length encoding technique sampling along horizontal lines which represented the midline of cells with a height of 250 feet. The measurement increment along these horizontal lines was one decafoot (10 feet). The quadrangle files were then merged into a county raster based file which was subsequently converted to ARC/INFO format.
The user should bear in mind that this coverage is only an approximation of the original soil survey and should not be used for site specific analysis. Additional details on the digitizing process are available on request.
