The MassDEP Wetlands datalayer comprises two feature types, polygons and arcs (lines). The attribute codes in the polygon layer describe different types of wetland environments and the arc attributes describe line types based on adjacent polygon types or arcs defined as hydrologic connections. In this service the wetland areas are displayed using outlines and labeled with wetland code abbreviation. This symbology is useful for displaying the data atop aerial imagery. Please see https://www.mass.gov/info-details/massgis-data-massdep-wetlands-2005 for more details.

This is a metadata compilation for maps published by Massachusetts Geological Survey as Miscellaneous Map Series M-13-01 through M-13-08 for the Massachusetts Geothermal Energy Project in 2013. The maps inlcude thermal conductivity of bedrock and soil, heat production, inferred heat flow, and temperatures at 3-, 4-, 5-, and 6-Km depths. The metadata compilation is published as an Excel workbook containing header features including title, description, author, citation, originator, distributor, and resource URL links to scanned maps (PDFs) for download. The Excel workbook contains contains six worksheets, including information about the template, notes related to revisions of the template, resource provider information, the data, a field list (data mapping view), and vocabularies (data valid terms) used to populate the data worksheet . The metadata was provided by the Massachusetts Geological Survey and made available for distribution through the National Geothermal Data System.

    Description

This public map service contains points and polygons representing information from the Massachusetts Cultural Resource Information System (MACRIS) database and related records on file at the Massachusetts Historical Commission (MHC), including the Inventory of Historic Assets of the Commonwealth, National Register of Historic Places nomination forms, local historic district study reports, local landmark reports, and other materials. The MACRIS database and the layers within the MACRIS Maps web application are updated regularly as new information is submitted and added, and as the accuracy of earlier versions of the datalayer is improved. Three datalayers are being made available to the public: The Inventory Points layer contains the locations of buildings, burial grounds, structures, and objects (e.g. statues, monuments, walls). The points layer is symbolized to indicate the most common historic designation types: 1) National Register of Historic Places, 2) local historic district, 3) both National Register and local historic district, 4) Preservation Restriction, 5) Massachusetts Historic Landmark (MA/HL) and 6) inventoried but not designated with one of the previous designations. Less common designations are not symbolized in MACRIS, but are included in the Designations attribute field. The Inventory Areas polygon layer includes areas and districts symbolized in MACRIS in a similar manner to Inventory Points. Another polygon layer, Towns, possesses a binary “y” or blank field to indicate whether a town has a survey pending digitization. Please note that new and updated information is added to MHC files daily, and that there may be considerable lag time before this information is reflected in MACRIS or in MACRIS Maps. Map information for “completed” towns may not reflect the most current information on file with MHC. For additional information, users may consult the source records, forms and maps that make up the official Inventory of Historic and Archaeological Assets of the Commonwealth, on file at the MHC, Massachusetts Archives Building, 220 Morrissey Boulevard, Boston, during weekday business hours. No appointment is needed. For directions, see https://www.sec.state.ma.us/mhc/.See the metadata for more details.

    Description

This layer represents all the public and many of the private roadways in Massachusetts, including designations for Interstate, U.S. and State routes.

Formerly known as the Massachusetts Highway Department (MHD) Roads, then the Executive Office of Transportation - Office of Transportation Planning (EOT-OTP) Roads, the MassDOT roads layer includes linework from the 1:5,000 road and rail centerlines data that were interpreted as part of the 1990s Black and White Digital Orthophoto project. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation - Office of Transportation Planning, which maintains this layer, continues to add linework from municipal and other sources and update existing linework using the most recent color ortho imagery as a base. The attribute table includes many "road inventory" items maintained in MassDOT's linear referencing system.

The data layer published in November 2018 is based on the MassDOT 2017 year-end Road Inventory layer and results of a 2014-2015 MassDOT-Central Transportation Planning Staff project to conflate street names and other attributes from MassGIS' "base streets" to the MassDOT Road Inventory linework. The base streets are continually maintained by MassGIS as part of the NextGen 911 and Master Address Database projects. MassGIS staff reviewed the conflated layer and added many base street arcs digitized after the completion of the conflation work. MassGIS added several fields to support legacy symbology and labeling. Other edits included modifying some linework in areas of recent construction and roadway reconfiguration to align to 2017-2018 Google ortho imagery, and making minor fixes to attributes and linework.

In ArcSDE this layer is named EOTROADS_ARC.

From this data layer MassGIS extracted the Major Roads and Major Highway Routes layers.

The Massachusetts House Legislative Districts (2012) datalayer reflects the state House of Representatives district boundaries as defined by Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 57: Section 4. These 160 districts were those used in the elections from 2012 and prior to 2022, when they were superseded by the 2021 House Districts.Staff at the Massachusetts House of Representatives developed this layer with its contractor, Caliper Corp. (Newton, MA), using Maptitude for Redistricting software. MassGIS appended the 1:100,000 coastline and state outline and added the attribute fields. Election results are obtained from the Secretary of State.

Urban heat islands are small areas where temperatures are unnaturally high - usually due to dense buildings, expansive hard surfaces, or a lack of tree cover or greenspace. People living in these communities are exposed to more dangerous conditions, especially as daytime high and nighttime low temperatures increase over time. NOAA Climate Program Office and CAPA Strategies have partnered with cities around the United States to map urban heat islands. Using Sentinel-2 satellite thermal data along with on-the-ground sensors, air temperature and heat indexes are calculated for morning, afternoon, and evening time periods. The NOAA Visualization Lab, part of the NOAA Satellite and Information Service, has made the original heat mapping data available as dynamic image services.Dataset SummaryPhenomenon Mapped: Sensing package time step valuesUnits: decimal degrees Cell Size: 30 metersPixel Type: 32 bit floating pointData Coordinate Systems: WGS84 Mosaic Projection: WGS84 Extent: cities within the United StatesSource: NOAA and CAPA StrategiesPublication Date: September 20, 2021What can you do with this layer? This imagery layer supports communities' UHI spatial analysis and mapping capabilities. Description

This tiled cached map service contains Building Structures (2-D, from Ortho Imagery) hosted at MassGIS' ArcGIS Online account.

This dataset consists of 2-dimensional roof outlines ("roofprints") for all buildings larger than 150 square feet, as interpreted by a contractor (Rolta) for the whole area of the Commonwealth using color, 30 cm. DigitalGlobe ortho images obtained in 2011 and 2012, supplemented with LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) data collected from 2002 to 2011 for the eastern half of the state.

The roofprints as delivered were enhanced by MassGIS using Normalized Digital Surface Models (NDSMs) derived from the same LiDAR data. Other layers were used, including the Property Tax Parcels, to aid in review, especially where LiDAR data were not available.

MassGIS has updated the data using ortho imagery from 2019, 2021, and 2023. Some building structure features were obtained from municipal data.

This cached tile service was last updated on October 26, 2024.
