StoryMaps is an undeniably useful tool for story telling, presenting research, or just sharing an interesting topic. Part of this process will likely involve the use of images or maps to aid in the flow and purpose of a StoryMap. This StoryMap illustrates a useful technique that allows you to use images in the same way that maps can be used throughout StoryMaps. This can be especially useful, as exampled throughout this StoryMap, when wanting to use a digital map interactively.

The Digital Chart of the World (DCW) is an Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI) product originally developed for the US Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) using DMA data. This data was downloaded from the Penn State web site and then converted to Shapefile format using ArcMap. See the Penn State web site for more details and to download other data: http://www.maproom.psu.edu/dcw/dcw_about.shtml NOTE - this is a revised version of an earlier DCW dataset that was here as of 5th August 09. It has fixed some issues in the conversion process from E00 to Shapefile that lost some features. This dataset is in the original geographical coordinate system (Clarke 1866). A set of ArcMap Layer Files is included with the data that can be used to give an approximate representation of the data. http://www.maproom.psu.edu/cgi-bin/dcw/dcwarea.cgi?Europ. This dataset was first accessioned in the EDINA ShareGeo Open repository on 2010-06-09 and migrated to Edinburgh DataShare on 2017-02-22.

This map displays information related to student housing at Penn State for the 1919-1920 Academic Year. The georeferenced and tiled Sanborn Map overlay base map come from the Penn State University Libraries Historic Sanborn Fire Insurance Collection. The digitized building outlines were created Summer 2015 as part of a Bednar Internship. Student directory information comes from the Penn State University Libraries Special Collections Library and was digitized by the Libraries Digitization, Conservation, and Preservation Department. Once digitized, the scanned directory pages were run through ABBYY FineReader OCR, formatted, cleaned, and related to the individual buildings to create this map. Created by the Donald W. Hamer Maps Library as part of 2016-2017 Academic Year Bednar Internship.
