Dimension: Income/composition of resources Definition: GNI per capita (2011 PPP International $, using natural logarithm) expressed as an index using a minimum value of $100 and a maximum value $75,000.

Economic growth is easy to understand: it means that people have access to goods and services of increasing quantity and quality. What is hard, however, is to measure economic growth. This chart shows two ways of doing this for US growth over the past 160 years. The purple lines represent a straightforward approach: each line tracks the share of households with access to one specific good or service. Starting from the top, you see the rising provision of basic infrastructure like running water, flush toilets, and electric power. You can also see the increasing availability of communication technology: radios, TVs, the Internet, and mobile phones. And further down, you see the rise of technologies that reduced work at home: vacuum cleaners, washing machines, dryers, and dishwashers. This approach is very concrete; it shows practical ways in which the production and consumption of specific goods increased over time. The downside is that it only captures a limited number of particular goods. Millions of goods and services are produced and consumed, and most are not recorded with such precision. A way to measure how people’s access to the full range of goods and services changes is to measure people’s incomes. This way of measuring growth is shown in the top left panel. The data on average income, here measured by GDP per capita, tells us that the average American was 13 times poorer in 1860 than in 2022 (adjusted for inflation). These two ways of measuring economic growth have pros and cons: one is concrete but not comprehensive, the other is comprehensive but quite abstract. If we want to understand what growth means for our societies, I find it helpful to combine them both.

This dataset provides quarterly personal income estimates for State of Iowa produced by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis . Data includes the following estimates: personal income, per capita personal income, proprietors' income, farm proprietors' income, compensation of employees and private nonfarm earnings, compensation, and wages and salaries for wholesale trade. Personal income, proprietors' income, and farm proprietors' income available beginning 1997; per capita personal income available beginning 2010; and all other data beginning 1998.
Personal income is defined as the sum of wages and salaries, supplements to wages and salaries, proprietors’ income, dividends, interest, and rent, and personal current transfer receipts, less contributions for government social insurance. Personal income for Iowa is the income received by, or on behalf of all persons residing in Iowa, regardless of the duration of residence, except for foreign nationals employed by their home governments in Iowa. Per capita personal income is personal income divided by the Census Bureau’s midquarter population estimates.
Proprietors' income is the current-production income (including income in kind) of sole proprietorships, partnerships, and tax-exempt cooperatives. Corporate directors' fees are included in proprietors' income. Proprietors' income includes the interest income received by financial partnerships and the net rental real estate income of those partnerships primarily engaged in the real estate business.
Farm proprietors’ income as measured for personal income reflects returns from current production; it does not measure current cash flows. Sales out of inventories are included in current gross farm income, but they are excluded from net farm income because they represent income from a previous year’s production.
Compensation to employees is the total remuneration, both monetary and in kind, payable by employers to employees in return for their work during the period. It consists of wages and salaries and of supplements to wages and salaries. Compensation is presented on an accrual basis - that is, it reflects compensation liabilities incurred by the employer in a given period regardless of when the compensation is actually received by the employee.
Private nonfarm earnings is the sum of wages and salaries, supplements to wages and salaries, and nonfarm proprietors' income, excluding farm and government.
Private nonfarm wages and salaries is wages and salaries excluding farm and government. Wages and salaries is the remuneration receivable by employees (including corporate officers) from employers for the provision of labor services. It includes commissions, tips, and bonuses; employee gains from exercising stock options; and pay-in-kind. Judicial fees paid to jurors and witnesses are classified as wages and salaries. Wages and salaries are measured before deductions, such as social security contributions, union dues, and voluntary employee contributions to defined contribution pension plans.

TwitterThis dataset provides statistics on real gross domestic product (GDP) and real GDP per capita for subnational regions. Real values are deflation-adjusted using the Regional Producer Price Index (ROPI), where available.
Data source and definition
Regional gross domestic product data is collected at current prices, in millions of national currency from Eurostat (reg_eco10) for EU countries and via delegates of the OECD Working Party on Territorial Indicators (WPTI), as well as from national statistical offices' websites.
To allow comparability over time and between countries, data at current prices are transformed into constant prices and purchasing power parity measures. Regional GDP per capita is calculated by dividing regional GDP by the average annual population of the region.

Definition of regions
Regions are subnational units below national boundaries. OECD countries have two regional levels: large regions (territorial level 2 or TL2) and small regions (territorial level 3 or TL3). The OECD regions are presented in the OECD Territorial grid (pdf) and in the OECD Territorial correspondence table (xlsx).
Use of economic data on small regions
When economic analyses are carried out at the TL3 level, it is advisable to aggregate data at the metropolitan region level when several TL3 regions are associated to the same metropolitan region. Metropolitan regions combine TL3 regions when 50% or more of the regional population live in a functionnal urban areas above 250 000 inhabitants. It provides a county level view of income, wages, proprietors' income, dividends, interest, rents, and government benefits, including a number of federal and state-level subsidies. Per capita income can be used to gauge the average financial health and associated social needs of an area. Analysis across regions offers a way to assess relative standard of living and quality of life of the population. Trends analysis of these data over time can also uncover specific regions of economic growth or decline across a variety of indicators. These personal income data represent an important lens into the financial security and socioeconomic determinants of health at the community level. They are used by the federal government to allocate hundreds of billions of dollars into state and local programs, to project budgets and trust fund balances, and to develop a more complete picture of labor costs. Personal income statistics can also help illustrate the dynamics between Americans' incomes, spending, and savings. The data summarize per capita income at the county level, including personal income, net earnings, transfer receipts, benefits programs, unemployment insurance, subsidy programs, retirement, dividends, insurance compensation, and several other economic indicators measured by the Department of Commerce or reported to other public agencies. Data source and definition
Employment data is collected from Eurostat (reg_eco10) for EU countries and via delegates of the OECD Working Party on Territorial Indicators (WPTI), as well as from national statistical offices' websites. Employment is measured at place of work. Labour utilisation is measured by the number of employment at place of work per capita, for total activity.
Definition of regions
Regions are subnational units below national boundaries. OECD countries have two regional levels: large regions (territorial level 2 or TL2) and small regions (territorial level 3 or TL3). The OECD regions are presented in the OECD Territorial grid (pdf) and in the OECD Territorial correspondence table (xlsx).
Use of economic data on small regions
When economic analyses are carried out at the TL3 level, it is advisable to aggregate data at the metropolitan region level when several TL3 regions are associated to the same metropolitan region. Metropolitan regions combine TL3 regions when 50% or more of the regional population live in a functionnal urban areas above 250 000 inhabitants. This approach corrects the distortions created by commuting, see the list of OECD metropolitan regions (xlsx) and the EU methodology (link).
Small regions (TL3) are categorized based on shared characteristics into regional typologies. See the economic indicators aggregated by territorial typology at country level on the access to City typology (link) and by urban-rural typology (link).
