    Description

In 2021, there were almost 232.8 million licensed drivers in the United States. At around 27 million, California issued the highest number of licenses in the country that year. Not only is California the U.S. state with the highest number of licensed drivers, but it is also the most populous state in the U.S. overall, representing close to 12 percent of the country’s total population.

Young people are most likely to be involved in car accidents
When it comes to accidents, people aged 21 to 24 are most at risk. While there are more female license holders in the U.S., men are more likely to drive at least occasionally. Across all age groups, the male population has substantially higher death rates than the female population.

About licenses in the U.S. The driver’s license became mandatory in the United States in the early 20th century, with Missouri and Massachusetts being the first states to require an official license for operating certain types of motor vehicles. Such vehicles include motorcycles, passenger vehicles, trucks, trailers, or buses. New Jersey became the first state to require all drivers to pass a mandatory test before being granted an official driver’s license.

There were around 33.2 million passenger cars in operation in the United Kingdom in 2022. UK roads have become busier since experiencing the most significant decline in the aftermath of the 2008-09 financial crisis. It remains to be seen whether the coronavirus crisis will cause a similar dent in the graph.

    Car ownership per household

The majority of car owners in the UK have one car available to them. As of 2018, 53 percent of motorists had one vehicle in their household. Only one percent of respondents owned five cars or more.

Road safety The number of car drivers involved in reported road accidents in Great Britain fell to a record-low of just under 160,000 in 2019. The age group of under 16 year olds witnessed a sharp drop in the number of traffic-related fatalities in 2019. That said, all other age groups reported an increase in fatalities between 2018 and 2019.

    Description

In 2022, the number of deaths due to road accidents in India among victims between 25 to 35 years amounted to nearly **** thousand, the most compared to other age groups. That year, there were over 169 thousand accidental fatalities across the south Asian country. Over-speeding was the leading contributor of accidents. Combined, state and national highways recorded around 258 thousand road accidents in 2022. This number had dropped significantly in 2016, before increasing again in recent years.

    Accident demographics

The Indian subcontinent ranked first in terms of road accident deaths according to the World Road Statistics which comprised of *** countries. A majority of victims were two-wheeler commuters. Additionally, pedestrians made up a high share of victims as well, reflecting the lack of infrastructure, be it improper footpaths and the lack of foot-over bridges or negligence of traffic rules. About ** percent of the road accidents in India accounted for about *** percent of the global road traffic accidents.

    Accident prevention

Poor enforcement of fines, in addition to mild punishments and corruption encourages drivers, especially among young Indians, to engage in rash driving. Accident awareness programs were initiated by the government among the motorists, along with the National Road Safety Policy to encourage safe transport, strict enforcement of safety laws and fines and establishment of road safety database.

Annual tests for lorries, buses and trailers

The annual test for lorries, buses and trailers is similar to the MOT test that cars take each year.

Summary of annual tests for lorries, buses and trailers

The initial fail rate is the rate for vehicles as they were brought for the annual test. The final fail rate excludes vehicles that pass the test after rectification of minor defects at the time of the test.

    Description

In 2022, the number of road accidents in Malaysia was around *******, indicating an increase compared to the previous year. 2019 was the most dangerous year for drivers on Malaysian roads in the past decade, with the highest number of road accidents. This was despite the General Insurance Association of Malaysia's target of halving the number of road accidents by 2020, in line with one of the United Nations’ sustainable development goals. Sustaining road safety As part of the U.N.’s sustainable development goal to “ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages”, member countries would need to halve the number of deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents by 2020. Malaysia already has a good foundation to achieve its goal with its infrastructure. Moreover, ** percent of Malaysians surveyed stated that they were satisfied with the road infrastructure. Reducing fatalities Despite the high number of road accidents in Malaysia, the number of casualties from such accidents has been decreasing since 2012. This is comparable to neighboring Singapore, which has a significantly smaller population than Malaysia. Despite the decrease in casualties, more can be done to promote safer roads in Malaysia, especially during the peak travelling seasons. This includes Chinese New Year and Hari Raya Aidilfitri, where millions of Malaysians traverse the highways from the cities back to their hometowns.

The percentage found in the third quarter of 2021 was even higher, with **** percent of new vehicles in the U.S being leased that year. Why lease a vehicle? When leasing a vehicle, the cost of depreciation is absorbed by the leaser, rather than the consumer. Similarly, maintenance costs are often paid by the company leasing the car, in order to keep the car in good condition for eventual sale after the lease ends. Finally, with the interest rates on auto loans between seven and ***** percent on average for a 60-month loan in 2024, financing a car purchase can add a significant amount to the sticker price. The auto market in the United States Vehicle sales in the United States amount to millions of cars per year. Through leasing new cars, drivers have the opportunity to enjoy a new vehicle without worrying about the longer term issues of car ownership. For suppliers, the cars retain a significant portion of their original value. After the lease, suppliers can then sell them in the automotive aftermarket.
