In the United States between 2005 and 2020, of the 42 nonfederal police officers convicted following their arrest for murder due to an on-duty shooting, only five ended up being convicted of murder. If police shootings are more likely to happen in states with a higher number of registered weapons, one could argue that the threat of violence against police makes officers more likely to utilize deadly force. However, countries like Canada also have a high number of individual firearms licenses, indicating that this factor likely does not explain the entire effect. Social factors may also influence this statistic, such as the use of the death penalty. Still, each fatal incident is complex, and the full situation surrounding each involves many factors, meaning that a simple solution is unlikely.

In 2023, murder and manslaughter charges had the highest crime clearance rate in the United States, with 57.8 percent of all cases being cleared by arrest or so-called exceptional means. Motor vehicle theft cases had the lowest crime clearance rate, at 8.2 percent. What is crime clearance? Within the U.S. criminal justice system, criminal cases can be cleared (or closed) one of two ways. However, more women than men held careers in the FBI as professional staff or intelligence analysts. In that year, 45.9 percent of the entire FBI workforce was female. The FBI The FBI is the United States government agency that deals with national security and law enforcement. As the principal agency that deals with law enforcement, it is primarily focused on domestic issues. The FBI focuses on protecting the United States from terrorist attacks, protecting civil rights, and protecting the United States from foreign espionage and cyber-attacks. The FBI is broken down into six branches, each lead by an executive director. FBI findings As one of the most important agencies in the United States, it was estimated that the FBI spent over 8.9 billion U.S. dollars on all programs in 2020. With the goal to protect Americans domestically, it sees all different types of crime. In 2023, assault and drug and narcotic offenses were the leading reasons for arrest by the FBI. Furthermore, hate crimes have been on the rise lately in the United States, with race, ethnicity, and/or ancestry being the leading reason for hate crime arrests nationwide.

In 2023/24, the arrest rate for people in England and Wales varied by self-identified ethnicity. People who identified as Black or Black British had an arrest rate of 17 per 1,000 population, compared with ten for people who identified as white, and eight who identified as Asian or Asian British.

The crime rate in the United Kingdom was highest in England and Wales in 2023/24, at 89.7 crimes per 1,000 people, compared with Scotland which had 55 crimes per 1,000 population and Northern Ireland, at 52.3 crimes per 1,000 people. During this time period, the crime rate of England and Wales has usually been the highest in the UK, while Scotland's crime rate has declined the most, falling from 93.4 crimes per 1,000 people in 2002/03, to just 52.3 by 2021/22. Overall crime on the rise In 2022/23 there were approximately 6.74 million crimes recorded by the police in England and Wales, with this falling to 6.66 million in 2023/24. Although crime declined quite significantly between 2002/03 and 2013/14, this trend has been reversed in subsequent years. While there are no easy explanations for the recent uptick in crime, it is possible that reduced government spending on the police service was at least partly to blame. In 2009/10 for example, government spending on the police stood at around 19.3 billion pounds, with this cut to between 17.58 billion and 16.35 billion between 2012/13 and 2017/18. One of the most visible consequences of these cuts was a sharp reduction in the number of police officers in the UK. As recently as 2019, there were just 150,000 police officers in the UK, with this increasing to 171,000 by 2023. A creaking justice system During the period of austerity, the Ministry of Justice as a whole saw its budget sharply decline, from 9.1 billion pounds in 2009/10, to just 7.35 billion by 2015/16. Although there has been a reversal of the cuts to budgets and personnel in the justice system, the COVID-19 pandemic hit the depleted service hard in 2020. A backlog of cases grew rapidly, putting a strain on the ability of the justice system to process cases quickly. As of the first quarter of 2023, for example, it took on average 676 days for a crown court case to go from offence to conclusion, compared with 412 days in 2014. There is also the issue of overcrowding in prisons, with the number of prisoners in England and Wales dangerously close to operational capacity in recent months.

In 2023, the District of Columbia had the highest reported violent crime rate in the United States, with 1,150.9 violent crimes per 100,000 of the population. Maine had the lowest reported violent crime rate, with 102.5 offenses per 100,000 of the population. Life in the District The District of Columbia has seen a fluctuating population over the past few decades. Its population decreased throughout the 1990s, when its crime rate was at its peak, but has been steadily recovering since then. While unemployment in the District has also been falling, it still has had a high poverty rate in recent years. The gentrification of certain areas within Washington, D.C. over the past few years has made the contrast between rich and poor even greater and is also pushing crime out into the Maryland and Virginia suburbs around the District. Law enforcement in the U.S. Crime in the U.S. is trending downwards compared to years past, despite Americans feeling that crime is a problem in their country. In addition, the number of full-time law enforcement officers in the U.S. has increased recently, who, in keeping with the lower rate of crime, have also made fewer arrests than in years past.

The number of reported cases of rape in Denmark increased significantly over the past years. While 367 rapes were reported in 2013, the number peaked in 2021, with over 2,100 cases. The number of rape charges also increased during this period. In 2022, 1,200 persons were charged for rape, meaning that a person was charged in 63 percent of the rape cases that year. The increasing number of reported cases of rape may not necessarily be down to an increase in the actual number, but is probably also related to an increased awareness around the topic.

In 2023, there were 127,216 reported rape cases in the United States. This figure also includes attempts and assaults to commit rape, but unforced statutory rape and other sex offenses are excluded. Sexual assault in the U.S. What is particularly common when it comes to sexual assault, is that many victims know their assailant. A rapist being a stranger lurking in the shadows is less likely than people may like to think. Additionally, most cases of rape or sexual assault in the United States often report the fact that the assailant did not have a weapon on them. These are frightening thoughts for anyone, which has led the U.S. to take a deeper look at what exactly is happening.

Sexual assault, in any form, has been a long simmering problem in the U.S.; one which has only recently begun to be addressed in the public spotlight. The #metoo movement began to go viral in October 2017 in response to sexual assault allegations against movie producer Harvey Weinstein. The movement aims to show just how widespread sexual assault is, and over half of Americans support the movement.

During the Troubles, the British government introduced a policy of internment in Northern Ireland, whereby authorities had the power to arrest and detain without trial individuals believed to be associated with paramilitary organizations. Between August 9. 1971 and December 5. 1975, almost 2,000 people were interned by the police and British Army. Around 95 percent of these were from a Catholic background, while the first Protestant internees were not arrested until 1973. Internment was introduced in an attempt to weaken the IRA and other nationalist paramilitary groups, however it had the opposite effect. Mismanagement and outdated information saw hundreds of unaffiliated people interned, some of those interned suffered police brutality and were coerced into confessions, and several anti-internment protests turned into some of the bloodiest days of the Troubles. These factors combined to bolster support for Catholic paramilitaries, who gradually transitioned from using defensive to offensive tactics in the early 1970s, and these groups would go on to be responsible for the largest number of combined deaths during the Troubles.
