In Canada in 2023, the ethnic minority most frequently affected by hate crimes motivated by race or ethnicity was black people, which accounted for 784 hate crimes.By 2023, there were a total of 4,777 hate crimes reported to the police, of which 2,128 were racist hate crimes.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, almost two out of five people of a Chinese background reported having experienced discrimination in Canada. They were the most commonly discriminated against visible minority group, followed by people of Filipino origin (31.6 percent) and Black people (27.6 percent). In comparison, about 12 percent of people who did not belong to a visible minority group said they had experienced discrimination since the beginning of the pandemic.

Black people are overrepresented in Canada's criminal justice system as both victims and people accused or convicted of crime. This fact sheet presents a statistical overview of the key areas of overrepresentation of Black people at different stages of the criminal justice system. National disaggregated data on the racialized identity of those who come in contact with the criminal justice system remain fairly limited and underreported. However, some information is available and presented in the current fact sheet. The data presented are drawn from Statistics Canada’s Canadian Centre for Justice and Community Safety Statistics (CCJCSS), the Department of Justice Canada’s Research and Statistics Division (RSD), the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC), and the Office of the Correctional Investigator (OCI)

Over three quarters of Lyft drivers in United States and Canada were members of racial minorities in 2024. Over a third of Lyft drivers identified as Hispanic or Latin American, while just under a quarter identified as Black or African American or Canadian. Lyft operates ride-sharing services in the United States and Canada.

Nigeria has the largest population in Africa. As of 2024, the country counted over 232.6 million individuals, whereas Ethiopia, which ranked second, has around 132 million inhabitants. Egypt registered the largest population in North Africa, reaching nearly 116 million people. In terms of inhabitants per square kilometer, Nigeria only ranks seventh, while Mauritius has the highest population density on the whole African continent. The fastest-growing world region Africa is the second most populous continent in the world, after Asia. Nevertheless, Africa records the highest growth rate worldwide, with figures rising by over two percent every year. In some countries, such as Niger, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Chad, the population increase peaks at over three percent. With so many births, Africa is also the youngest continent in the world. However, this coincides with a low life expectancy. African cities on the rise The last decades have seen high urbanization rates in Asia, mainly in China and India. However, African cities are currently growing at larger rates. Indeed, most of the fastest-growing cities in the world are located in Sub-Saharan Africa. Gwagwalada, in Nigeria, and Kabinda, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, ranked first worldwide. By 2035, instead, Africa's fastest-growing cities are forecast to be Bujumbura, in Burundi, and Zinder, Nigeria.

Ice hockey is a worldwide sport that is particularly popular in the United States and Canada thanks to the prominence of the National Hockey League (NHL). According to a survey conducted in April 2023, just 10 percent of Black respondents from the United States were avid fans of NHL.

In 2023, around 50 children were born per thousand Asian women in the United States. The highest birth rate was among Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander mothers, at 79 percent during the same year.

During the Second World War, the three Axis powers of Germany, Italy, and Finland mobilized the largest share of their male population. For the Allies, the Soviet Union mobilized the largest share of men, as well as the largest total army of any country, but it was restricted in its ability to mobilize more due to the impact this would have on its economy. Other notable statistics come from the British Empire, where a larger share of men were drafted from Dominions than from the metropole, and there is also a discrepancy between the share of the black and white populations from South Africa.

However, it should be noted that there were many external factors from the war that influenced these figures. For example, gender ratios among the adult populations of many European countries was already skewed due to previous conflicts of the 20th century (namely WWI and the Russian Revolution), whereas the share of the male population eligible to fight in many Asian and African countries was lower than more demographically developed societies, as high child mortality rates meant that the average age of the population was much lower.
