Child poverty peaked in 1993 with 22.7 percent of children living in poverty in that year in the United States. Between 2000 and 2010, the child poverty rate in the United States was increasing every year; however,this rate was down to 15 percent in 2022. The number of people living in poverty in the U.S. varies from state to state. Compared to California, where about 4.44 million people were living in poverty in 2022, the state of Minnesota had about 429,000 people living in poverty.

In 2025, nearly 11.7 percent of the world population in extreme poverty, with the poverty threshold at 2.15 U.S. dollars a day, lived in Nigeria. Moreover, the Democratic Republic of the Congo accounted for around 11.7 percent of the global population in extreme poverty. Other African nations with a large poor population were Tanzania, Mozambique, and Madagascar. Poverty levels remain high despite the forecast decline Poverty is a widespread issue across Africa. Around 429 million people on the continent were living below the extreme poverty line of 2.15 U.S. dollars a day in 2024. Since the continent had approximately 1.4 billion inhabitants, roughly a third of Africa’s population was in extreme poverty that year. Poverty is a regional problem Poverty can be measured in relative and absolute terms. Absolute poverty concerns basic human needs such as food, clothing, shelter, and clean drinking water, whereas relative poverty looks at whether people in different countries can afford a certain living standard. Most countries that have a high percentage of their population living in absolute poverty, meaning that they are poor compared to international standards, are regionally concentrated. African countries are most represented among the countries in which poverty prevails the most. In terms of numbers, Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia have the most people living in poverty worldwide. Inequality on the rise How wealth, or the lack thereof, is distributed within the global population and even within countries is very unequal. In 2022, the richest one percent of the world owned almost half of the global wealth, while the poorest 50 percent owned less than two percent in the same year. Within regions, Latin America had the most unequal distribution of wealth, but this phenomenon is present in all world regions.

In 2025, around ***** million people in Africa were living in extreme poverty, with the poverty threshold at **** U.S. dollars a day. The number of poor people on the continent dropped slightly compared to the previous year. Poverty in Africa is expected to decline slightly in the coming years, even in the face of a growing population. The number of inhabitants living below the extreme poverty line would decrease to around *** million by 2030.

Overall, both the number of people living in poverty and the number of people living in extreme poverty in Latin America increased between 2015 and 2022, reaching 202 million and 81 million people, respectively. Since then, the number of people living in poverty has declined. In 2024, an estimated 170 million people were projected to be living in poverty in the region. . Moreover, indigenous peoples in Latin America continue to experience extremely high poverty rates.

In 2023, nearly ** percent of the world population in extreme poverty lived in Nigeria, considering the poverty threshold at **** U.S. dollars a day. Within the studied timeframe, the share mainly rose. Overall, the number of people living in extreme poverty in Africa was estimated to reach *** million in 2025.

In 2023, indigenous women in Latin America had a slightly higher share of people living under extreme poverty than indigenous men. Throughout the time of reference, the disparities amongst those genders haven't been extremely noticeable, with the largest difference being 1.3 percentage points. Overall, 17 percent of indigenous people in Latin America had an average per capita income below the extreme poverty line in 2023.

Among selected Latin American countries, Colombia had the highest share of indigenous population with an average per capita income below the extreme poverty line, at 46.8 percent. Ecuador followed second, with 28.5 percent of indigenous people living in extreme poverty. Those two countries also had the highest share of indigenous people living in poverty.

Since 2005, the share of indigenous population with an average per capita income below the extreme poverty has remained above the minimum of 16 percent in Latin America. In 2022, the percentage reached its lowest score of 16.6, a considerable decrease in comparison to the previous year. Furthermore, that year Colombia had the highest share of indigenous population living in extreme poverty.

The number of poor people in the country has been following an upward trend. In 2016, there were around ** million Angolans in extreme poverty. By 2026, it would increase to **** million.

In 2025, ** percent of the population in Mozambique lived in extreme poverty (with less than **** U.S. dollars a day), the highest score recorded in the Southern African region. Conversely, Botswana registered the lowest share, with ** percent of its population living in destitute conditions.

As of 2024, around **** million people in South Africa are living in extreme poverty, with the poverty threshold at **** U.S. dollars daily. This means that ******* more people were pushed into poverty compared to 2023. Moreover, the headcount was forecast to increase in the coming years. By 2030, over **** million South Africans will live on a maximum of **** U.S. dollars per day. Who is considered poor domestically? Poverty is measured using several matrices. For example, local authorities tend to rely on the national poverty line, assessed based on consumer price indices (CPI) of a basket of goods of food and non-food components. In 2023, the domestic poverty line in South Africa stood at ***** South African rand per month (around ***** U.S. dollars per month). During the period observed, the poverty incidence in Kenya peaked in 2022, likely due to the disruption to the country's economy caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Out of all OECD countries, Cost Rica had the highest poverty rate as of 2022, at over 20 percent. The country with the second highest poverty rate was the United States, with 18 percent. On the other end of the scale, Czechia had the lowest poverty rate at 6.4 percent, followed by Denmark.

It is clear that poverty in the United States is a complex, multi-faceted issue that affects millions of people and is even more complex to solve.
