In 2023, Texas had the highest number of forcible rape cases in the United States, with 15,097 reported rapes. Delaware had the lowest number of reported forcible rape cases at 194. Number vs. rate It is perhaps unsurprising that Texas and California reported the highest number of rapes, as these states have the highest population of states in the U.S. When looking at the rape rate, or the number of rapes per 100,000 of the population, a very different picture is painted: Alaska was the state with the highest rape rate in the country in 2023, with California ranking as 30th in the nation. The prevalence of rape Rape and sexual assault are notorious for being underreported crimes, which means that the prevalence of sex crimes is likely much higher than what is reported. Additionally, more than a third of women worry about being sexually assaulted, and most sexual assaults are perpetrated by someone the victim knew.

In the year ended June 2023, European victims accounted for around 31 percent of victim-reported sexual assault crimes in New Zealand. The number of victim-reported crimes has trended slightly upwards over the past few years, with females in the 15 to 19 age category reporting the highest number of offenses.

The number of rape and sexual assault cases reported to the police in Germany peaked at 12,186 in 2023 during the period shown here. Previously, the highest number of cases, 11,896, had been recorded the year before. Based on the definition in criminal law, sexual assault includes rape, as well as other sexually driven physical attacks. Rape is defined as forcing a person to have sex. Increased crime clearance rate The question remains how high the number of unreported cases is. Reasons for not reporting a sexual assault vary among victims. In recent years, the German police reported increasing clearance rates for sexual crimes. In 2022, 83.7 percent of rape and sexual assault cases were solved, compared to 78.6 percent in 2016. In 2023, however this figure dropped to 83.4 percent, perhaps due to the increase in the number of cases. Among males suspected of committing such crimes,over 75 percent were young adults aged 18 to 21 years. Types of German police forces German police forces are divided into several different types, which all have clearly established tasks regulated by law. The Federal Criminal Police Office (Bundeskriminalamt, BKA) is often compared to the FBI in the U.S. and investigates federal crimes, such as kidnapping. The Federal Police (Bundespolizei), works in railway stations, at airports, and seaports. They also protect borders, government buildings, and deal with organized crime and terrorism. The criminal police (Kriminalpolizei, Kripo), the only policemen not wearing in uniform in Germany, handle assault, murder, and rape cases, as well as theft. The uniformed police (Schutzpolizei, SchuPo), or beat police, are regularly visible in streets, as they are responsible for traffic safety, among other tasks, and may be approached directly by people in need of assistance or help.

In 2023, the City of New York experienced a total of 1,455 rapes. This was a significant decrease from 2001 when 1,981 rapes were reported. These figures include all crimes as defined in the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting definition of rape.

The number of recorded rapes in Japan increased to approximately 3,940 cases in 2024 from the previous year. The number of reported non-consensual indecencies also increased to nearly 7,000 cases. In 2023, amendments to the Penal Code expanded the definition of rape, which up to that point was interpreted as forced intercourse, including forced anal and oral sex, to non-consensual intercourse.

In 2023, 88 percent of the victims of rape or attempted rape recorded by the French security forces were women. The proportion of men among the perpetrators of these crimes was 98 percent. Regarding sexual offenses, 85 percent of the victims were women, and 96 percent of the perpetrators were men. It should also be noted that the older the victims, the more women are represented among them.

The number of reported cases of rape in Norway was usually between 2,300 and 2,700 between 2016 and 2023. In 2023, nearly 2,400 cases of rape were reported in the country. That year, over 400 cases of sexual abuse involved children under the age of 16 years.

In the United States, significantly more women than men are sexually assaulted. In 2023, about 376,038 women were raped or sexually assaulted in the U.S. - a decrease from the previous year. In comparison, 104,979 men were raped or sexually assaulted in 2023, which was an increase compared to the year before.

The share of non-German crime suspects in Germany was 41.1 percent in 2023. This was an increase compared to the previous year. Figures fluctuated during the specified time period, peaking in 2023.

In 2023, Anchorage, Alaska had the highest rape rate in the United States with 144.6 offenses of rape per 100,000 inhabitants. The St. Joseph metropolitan statistical area, in Missouri and Kansas, had the second-highest rape rate in the country, at 141.4 offenses per 100,000 of the population.

As of 2023, the African country with the highest rate of sexual violnce was Botswana. It had 131.7 cases out of 100,000 inhabitants. The second highest rate was South Africa. It is important to note that these statistics relfect reported crime however, not all crime is reported.

In 2023, about 105,576 women in the United States were raped or sexually assaulted by well-known or casual acquaintances. For men, this number was significantly lower, with 30,361 men being raped or sexually assaulted by well-known or casual acquaintances in that year.

The number of reported cases of rape in Denmark increased significantly over the past years. While 367 rapes were reported in 2013, the number peaked in 2021, with over 2,100 cases. The number of rape charges also increased during this period. In 2022, 1,200 persons were charged for rape, meaning that a person was charged in 63 percent of the rape cases that year. The increasing number of reported cases of rape may not necessarily be down to an increase in the actual number, but is probably also related to an increased awareness around the topic.

In 2022, about 194,164 perpetrators of child abuse in the United States were white. In that same year, about 83,314 perpetrators of child abuse were Hispanic, and 25,092 were of unknown ethnic origin.

In 2023, around 75 of the men who were suspected of rape or sexual assault in Germany were aged 18 to 21. This was the age group with the highest number of suspects.

The number of found rape crimes in Poland decreased significantly during the observed period. In 2023, over 1,000 cases of rape were recorded in the country, of which 926 were detected.

In 2023, the rate of sexual assaults in South Korea was 75.4 crimes per 100 thousand people. It was an increase compared to the previous year.

There were 1,181 rape offences recorded in Northern Ireland in 2023/24, more than double the amount that were recorded ten years earlier. Compared with the previous reporting year, there was an increase in rape offences in Northern Ireland.

In 2022, there were about 547,655 victims of child abuse in the United States. In that year, about 130,048 children of Hispanic origin were reported to be abused in the country. A further 118,850 Black children were the victims of abuse in that year.

In Sweden, the total number of reported cases of sexual offences increased from 2012 to 2021, before falling somewhat again in 2022. Whereas a total number of over 16,000 sexual offenses were reported in 2013, this had increased to nearly 24,000 by 2023. The highest number of these were cases of sexual harassment, followed by rape. Especially the number of reported cases of rape increased over the period, from 6,000 in 2012 to 9,300 in 2023. This is probably down to an increased awareness about reporting.
