    In 2022, Canada had the highest share of adults with a university degree, at over 60 percent of those between the ages of 25 and 64. India had the smallest share of people with a university degree, at 13 percent of the adult population. Future earnings potential can be determined by which university one attends, whether by the prestige of the university or the connections that have been made there. For instance, graduates from the Stanford Graduate School of Business can expect to earn around 250,000 U.S. dollars annually.

    In the 2023/24 academic year, 29 percent of undergraduates obtaining their degree were awarded a degree with first-class honors, the highest possible grade for UK graduates. Almost half of all students achieved an upper second or 2.1, with 20 percent obtaining a lower second or 2.2, and just four percent of graduates obtained a third, the lowest possible pass grade. The share of UK students graduating with a first-class degree has increased significantly in this time period, while the share of students obtaining a 2.2 has fallen the most in the same time period. GCSE and A-Level grades also on the rise Higher grades for the UK's main qualification for high school students, the general certificate of secondary education (GCSE), have also increased recently. In 1988 for example, approximately 8.4 percent of GCSE entries received the highest grade, compared with 21.8 percent in 2024. This is also the case to a lesser-extent for advanced level GCSE results (A-Levels), with the share of entries being awarded an A or A* increasing from 17.8 percent in 2000 to 27.8 percent in 2024. There is no consensus on if these improvements are due to increased ability, or to grade inflation. During the COVID-19 pandemic, however, grades in the UK were a lot higher than in other years. This was due to teacher and tutor assessments being giving a higher weighting than normal, with exams being postponed or cancelled completely. The UK's top universities Britain's oldest and most famous universities, Cambridge and Oxford, remained the two highest-ranked universities in the UK in 2025, with the London School of Economics finishing third. According to the ranking, the University of St Andrews was the top university outside the south of England, with Durham University being the highest-ranked university in the north of England. The largest university in terms of enrolled students was the mainly remote focused Open University, which had over 140,000 students in 2022/23. Among universities that mainly taught on-campus, University College London had the most students enrolled, at almost 52,000.

    Age

    Age is derived from the date of birth question and is a person's age at their last birthday, at 27 March 2011. Dates of birth that imply an age over 115 are treated as invalid and the person's age is imputed. Infants less than one year old are classified as 0 years of age.

    Ethnic group

    Ethnic group classifies people according to their own perceived ethnic group and cultural background.

    This topic contains ethnic group write-in responses without reference to the five broad ethnic group categories, e.g. all Irish people, irrespective of whether they are White, Mixed/multiple ethnic groups, Asian/Asian British, Black/African/Caribbean/Black British or Other ethnic group, are in the Irish response category. This topic was created as part of the commissioned table processing.

    Highest level of qualification

    The highest level of qualification is derived from the question asking people to indicate all types of qualifications held. People were also asked if they held foreign qualifications and to indicate the closest equivalent.

    There were 12 response options (plus 'no qualifications') covering professional and vocational qualifications, and a range of academic qualifications.

    These are combined into five categories for the highest level of qualification, plus a category for no qualifications and one for other qualifications (which includes vocational or work-related qualifications, and for foreign qualifications where an equivalent qualification was not indicated):

    This dataset represents ethnic group (19 tick-box level) by highest level qualification, for England and Wales combined. The data are also broken down by age and by sex.

    The ethnic group that the person completing the census feels they belong to. This could be based on their culture, family background, identity, or physical appearance. Respondents could choose one out of 19 tick-box response categories, including write-in response options.

    Total counts for some population groups may not match between published tables. This is to protect the confidentiality of individuals' data. Population counts have been rounded to the nearest 5 and any counts below 10 are suppressed, this is signified by a 'c' in the data tables.

    "Asian Welsh" and "Black Welsh" ethnic groups were included on the census questionnaire in Wales only, these categories were new for 2021.

    This dataset provides Census 2021 estimates that classify usual residents in England and Wales by ethnic group. The estimates are as at Census Day, 21 March 2021. This dataset shows population counts for usual residents aged 16+ Some people aged 16 years old will not have completed key stage 4 yet on census day, and so did not have the opportunity to record any qualifications on the census.

    These estimates are not comparable to Department of Education figures on highest level of attainment because they include qualifications obtained outside England and Wales.

    Description

    This shows the proportion of the population aged 16 to 64 qualified to National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) level 4 or above. This covers people holding qualifications equivalent to National Qualifications Framework (NQF) levels 4-8. Level 4-6 qualifications include foundation or first degrees, recognised degree-level professional qualifications, teaching or nursing qualifications, diploma in higher education, HNC/HND or equivalent vocational qualification. Qualifications at level 7-8 include higher degrees, and postgraduate level professional qualifications. Data are from the Annual Population Survey (APS) which is a continuous household survey, covering the UK with a sample size of approximately 320,000 respondents. The data sets consist of 12 months of survey data and are broken down on a quarterly basis, qualification data is only available for calendar year survey periods, i.e. periods ending in December.Data is Powered by LG Inform Plus and automatically checked for new data on the 3rd of each month.

    Census 2021 data on religion by highest qualification level, by sex, by age, England and Wales combined. This dataset provides Census 2021 estimates that classify usual residents in England and Wales by ethnic group. The estimates are as at Census Day, 21 March 2021.

    The religion people connect or identify with (their religious affiliation), whether or not they practise or have belief in it.
    This question was voluntary and the variable includes people who answered the question, including “No religion”, alongside those who chose not to answer this question.

    Total counts for some population groups may not match between published tables. This is to protect the confidentiality of individuals' data. Population counts have been rounded to the nearest 5 and any counts below 10 are suppressed, this is signified by a 'c' in the data tables.

    This dataset shows population counts for usual residents aged 16 years and over. Some people aged 16 years old will not have completed key stage 4 yet on census day, and so did not have the opportunity to record any qualifications on the census.

    These estimates are not comparable to Department of Education figures on highest level of attainment because they include qualifications obtained outside England and Wales.

    Description

    This dataset provides Census 2021 estimates that classify usual residents aged 16 years and over in Northern Ireland by their highest level of qualification, and by broad age bands. The estimates are as at census day, 21 March 2021.

    The census collected information on the usually resident population of Northern Ireland on census day (21 March 2021). Initial contact letters or questionnaire packs were delivered to every household and communal establishment, and residents were asked to complete online or return the questionnaire with information as correct on census day. Special arrangements were made to enumerate special groups such as students, members of the Travellers Community, HM Forces personnel etc. The Census Coverage Survey (an independent doorstep survey) followed between 12 May and 29 June 2021 and was used to adjust the census counts for under-enumeration.

    'Age' is age at last birthday.

    Qualification

    • No qualifications: No academic or professional qualifications.
    • Level 1: 1-4 GCSEs, O Levels, CSEs (any grades); NVQ level 1; or equivalent qualifications.
    • Level 2: 5+ GCSEs (Grades A*-C, 9-4), O Levels (Passes), CSEs (Grade 1); 1 A Level, 2-3 AS Levels; NVQ level 2, BTEC General, City and Guilds Craft; or equivalent qualifications. Apprenticeship.

    These data contain lifetables derived from the ONS Longitudinal study dataset, and according to age, sex and individual socio-economic status measured with education, occupation or wage in England and Wales in 2011. Life table according to age, sex and individual’s education, or occupation or wage for the England & Wales population in 2011 The data contained in these files are aggregated data from the ONS Longitudinal Study (ONS LS). The ONS LS is a long-term census-based multi-cohort study. It uses four annual birthdates as random selection criteria, giving a 1% sample of the England and Wales population (10.1093/ije/dyy243). The initial sample was drawn from the 1971 Census, and study members’ census records have been linked every 10 years up to the 2011 Census. New members enter the study through birth or immigration, and existing members leave through death or emigration.     The sample comprises of undergraduate social science students who were studying on introductory statistics courses at twelve UK universities (n=677). The data were collected anonymously between 2015 and 2017. The main mode of data collection was via a survey questionnaire that was completed in class during teaching. Where it was not possible to administer a physical questionnaire in a class setting there was an online version of the survey questionnaire available. Survey results were linked with final course grade via the student number. The research received ethical approval from the University of Edinburgh. The survey data collection tool was based on a previous survey by Payne, G., Hodgkinson, L., Williams, M. (2009). SN 6137. This survey tool was adapted to include a validated measure of statistics anxiety, the Statistics Anxiety Rating Scale, along with a number of other variables of interest.This project was part of the National Centre for Research Methods 2014-19 funding phase. It was led by Professor John MacInnes, University of Edinburgh. The project collected data from social science undergraduate students studying on general introductory courses in social statistics from a dozen UK universities. This was linked to information on course performance. The survey data collection tool was based on a previous survey by Payne, G., Hodgkinson, L., Williams, M. (2009). SN 6137. This was adapted to include a validated measure of statistics anxiety, the Statistics Anxiety Rating Scale. The study population of interest was undergraduate social science students studying on general courses in social statistics. A key emphasis of the project was to collect data on statistics anxiety and course performance. The main degrees in the sample were human geography, sociology and criminology. A number of other degree programmes are represented in the data. The primary data collection method was a physical survey questionnaire that was completed in class. Where it was not possible to administer the questionnaire in class an online version of the survey was available. A dozen different university institutions took part in the research.
