Around *** million families in the United States had three or more children under 18 living in the household in 2023. In that same year, about ***** million households had no children under 18 living in the household.

According to a survey conducted in 2024, ** percent of adults aged 18 to 49 years who said they were unlikely to have children in the United States agreed that a major reason for remaining childless was that they just did not want to have children. A further ** percent said that they wanted to focus on other things, while ** percent cited concerns about the state of the world.

In 2022, 97.4 percent of women between the ages of 15 and 19 years old in the United States were childless -- the most out of any age group. In the same year, 17.7 percent of women between the ages of 40 and 44 years old were childless. Demographics of women without children As of 2022, a little less than half of all women in the U.S. were childless. About 68.4 percent of women without children did not have a high school degree, which is in line with the largest percentage of childless women being between the ages of 15 and 19. Additionally, about 48 percent of Asian women in the United States did not have any children, more than the national average. Births in the U.S. Asian women in the United States have the lowest fertility rate per 1,000 women, while Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander women had the highest fertility rate. The vast majority of all births in the U.S. were to women between the ages of 20 and 39, but it is worth noting that births in the United States have been declining over the past few decades.

The files in the data directory contain estimates of population and poverty.

The school districts for which we have estimates were 
identified in the **2022 school district mapping survey**,
which asked about all school districts as of January 1, 2023 and 
used school district boundaries for the 2021-2022 school year.

The 2022 estimates are consistent with the population controls and 
income concepts used in the American Community Survey single-year 
estimates.  

There is one file for each of the states, the District of Columbia, and 
the entire United States. Each file contains the FIPS state code, 
Department of Education Common Core of Data (CCD) ID numbers, District names, 
the total population, population of school-age children, and estimated 
number of school-age children in poverty related to the head of the household.
