    Description

In March 2020, Americans began experiencing numerous lifestyle changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some reports have suggested that pet acquisition and ownership increased during this period, and some have suggested shelters and rescues will be overwhelmed once pandemic-related restrictions are lifted and lifestyles shift yet again. In May 2021, the ASPCA hired the global market research company Ipsos to conduct a general population survey that would provide a more comprehensive picture of pet ownership and acquisition during the pandemic. Although pet owners care for a number of species, the term pet owner in this study specifically refers to those who had dogs and/or cats. One goal of the survey was to determine whether data from a sample of adults residing in the United States would corroborate findings from national shelter databases indicating that animals were not being surrendered to shelters in large numbers. Furthermore, this survey gauged individuals' concerns related to the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, and analyses examined factors associated with pet owners indicating they were considering rehoming an animal within the next 3 months. The data showed that pet ownership did not increase during the pandemic and that pets may have been rehomed in greater numbers than occurs during more stable times. Importantly, rehomed animals were placed with friends, family members, and neighbors more frequently than they were relinquished to animal shelters and rescues. Findings associated with those who rehomed an animal during the pandemic, or were considering rehoming, suggest that animal welfare organizations have opportunities to increase pet retention by providing resources regarding pet-friendly housing and affordable veterinary options and by helping pet owners strategize how to incorporate their animals into their post-pandemic lifestyles.

    Pet Health Data Market Outlook

According to our latest research, the global pet health data market size reached USD 3.2 billion in 2024, demonstrating robust adoption across veterinary, insurance, and pet owner segments. The market is expanding at a CAGR of 13.8% and is forecasted to reach USD 9.1 billion by 2033. This accelerated growth is primarily driven by the proliferation of digital health records, increased pet ownership, and the integration of advanced analytics and wearable technologies in pet healthcare management.

One of the most significant growth factors fueling the pet health data market is the rising awareness among pet owners regarding preventive healthcare and wellness for their animals. As more households treat pets as family members, there is a marked increase in demand for comprehensive health monitoring solutions. The adoption of digital platforms and wearable devices enables real-time tracking of pet activity, behavior, and physiological parameters, empowering owners and veterinarians to make data-driven decisions. This trend is further amplified by the growing penetration of smartphones and internet connectivity, making pet health management more accessible and actionable for a broader demographic.

Another key driver is the expanding role of veterinary professionals and clinics in leveraging health data for improved diagnosis, treatment planning, and personalized care. The integration of electronic medical records (EMR) and advanced analytics tools allows veterinarians to maintain longitudinal health histories, track treatment outcomes, and identify emerging health risks in pet populations. Additionally, the increasing collaboration between veterinary clinics and pharmaceutical companies is facilitating the development of targeted therapies and preventive measures, further boosting the market for pet health data solutions. The ability to harness genetic and behavioral data is also opening new avenues for research and innovation in animal health.

The insurance sector is also playing a pivotal role in market growth. As pet insurance coverage expands globally, insurers are increasingly relying on comprehensive pet health data to assess risk, design customized policies, and streamline claims processing. This data-driven approach not only enhances operational efficiency but also incentivizes pet owners to invest in regular health monitoring and preventive care. The synergy between insurance providers, veterinary professionals, and technology companies is creating a dynamic ecosystem that supports the ongoing digitization and monetization of pet health data.

From a regional perspective, North America continues to dominate the pet health data market, accounting for the largest share in 2024, followed by Europe and Asia Pacific. The high pet ownership rates, advanced veterinary infrastructure, and early adoption of digital health technologies in the United States and Canada have positioned the region as a frontrunner. Europe is witnessing rapid growth, particularly in countries with strong animal welfare regulations and a mature insurance sector. Meanwhile, Asia Pacific is emerging as a high-growth region, driven by rising disposable incomes, urbanization, and increasing awareness of pet healthcare. Latin America and the Middle East & Africa are gradually catching up, supported by improving veterinary services and growing pet populations.

    Component Analysis

The pet health data market is segmented by component into software, hardware, and services, each playing a unique role in the ecosystem. Software solutions form the backbone of the market, encompassing electronic health record (EHR) systems, analytics platforms, and mobile applications designed to collect, store, and analyze pet health data. These platforms enable seamless integration of data from multiple sources, including veterinary clinics, wearable devices, and pet owners, ensuring a comprehensive view of animal health. The demand for user-friendly and interoperable software is particularly high, as stakeholders seek to streamline workflows and enhance data accessibility across the value chain.

On the hardware front, the proliferation of wearable devices, such as smart collars and activity trackers, is revolutionizing pet health monitoring. These devices capture real-time data on physical activity, vital signs, and behavioral patterns, providing valuable insights for both owners and veterinary professiona

    Description

Describing the relationship with one’s cat in human terms might reflect an underlying anthropomorphic view of the relationship which might be associated with an owner’s behavior towards their cat and the cat’s living environment. Owners self-categorized the relationship with their cat as either a ‘member of the family’, ‘as a child’, ‘best friend’, or ‘a pet animal’. The extent to which owner- and cat-related factors influence these four relationship descriptions are examined in survey data of approximately 1800 cat owners. Differences in outdoor access, care during absence of the owner, and access to the bedroom are examined between the four relationship perceptions. The owner’s age and household composition, ideas about their cat’s equality, support, and dependency, and whether their cat is a pedigree were significantly associated with relationship description and explained 46% of the variance. Owners who perceive their cat as a child or best friend see their cat as loyal, empathetic, equal to family, and dependent on them for love and care. Their cats are less often left in the care of others, are allowed more often in the bedroom and have less often (unrestricted) outdoor access. Moreover, cats perceived as children are more likely to live in a multi-cat household. Our results provide insight in the factors that are related to different (anthropomorphic) perceptions of the human–cat relationship and how perceptions relate to the living environment of cats.

    Description

Dogs and cats have become the most important and successful pets through long-term domestication. People keep them for various reasons, such as their functional roles or for physical or psychological support. However, why humans are so attached to dogs and cats remains unclear. A comprehensive understanding of the current state of human preferences for dogs and cats and the potential influential factors behind it is required. Here, we investigate this question using two independent online datasets and anonymous questionnaires in China. We find that current human preferences for dog and cat videos are relatively higher than for most other interests, with video plays ranking among the top three out of fifteen interests. We also find genetic variations, gender, age, and economic development levels notably influence human preferences for dogs and cats. Specifically, dog and cat ownership are significantly associated with parents’ pet ownership of dogs and cats (Spearman’s rank correlation c..., , , # Human preferences for dogs and cats in China: the current situation and influencing factors of watching online videos and pet ownership

    Description

Animal shelters aim to divert intake by encouraging pet retention in homes (e.g., support services) or through alternative methods of surrender (e.g., self-rehoming); however, it remains unclear what factors contribute to decisions to seek pet support services, as well as select different methods to surrender a pet. Using a sample of 452 U.S. and Canadian public members who rehomed a dog or cat within the past five years, the present study identified groups of pet owners who share similar patterns of responses to surrender circumstances using latent class analysis. The model revealed three heterogeneous classes of surrendering pet owners distinguished largely by the reason for surrender and the length of ownership. Comparisons revealed differences across classes regarding the proportion of respondents, the pathways used to surrender, and the concerns reported by respondents during surrender. Qualitative analysis revealed that respondents wanted or sought a variety of different support services, including behavioural support, part-time care, and veterinary care. Future research should consider the heterogeneity in surrender decision-making when addressing issues of intake diversion from animal shelters.

    Description

The association between pet ownership and the development of allergic and respiratory diseases has been the aim of several studies, however, the effects of exposure in adults remain uncertain. The aims of the present study were to investigate the prevalence of asthma and lung function status among dog and cat owners. This cross-sectional study was performed at two universities with students and workers who were allocated into 3 groups according to pet ownership in the previous year: cat owners, dog owners, and no pets (control group). Subjects underwent spirometry, bronchial challenge test with mannitol, skin prick tests, and questionnaires about animal exposures and respiratory symptoms. Control group comprised 125 subjects; cat owner group, 51 subjects; and dog owner group, 140 subjects. Cat owners had increased asthma prevalence (defined by symptoms and positive bronchial challenge test), but no changes in lung function compared to the control group. The dog owner group had lower spirometry values (forced expiratory volume in one second and lower forced vital capacity), but similar asthma prevalence, compared to the control group. In the cat owner group, excess of asthma may have an immunological basis, since we found an association with atopy. Although we did not have endotoxin data from volunteers' households, we postulated that low values of lung function were associated to exposure to endotoxins present in environments exposed to dogs.

    Description

The global pet microchipping services market is experiencing robust growth, driven by increasing pet ownership, heightened pet welfare awareness, and stricter regulations mandating microchipping. This market is projected to reach a value of $2.5 billion in 2025, demonstrating a significant expansion from its 2019 baseline. While precise historical data is unavailable, a conservative estimate places the 2019 market size at approximately $1.5 billion. Assuming a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 8% (a reasonable figure considering the market drivers), the market is poised for sustained growth throughout the forecast period (2025-2033). This CAGR reflects the increasing adoption of microchipping by pet owners, veterinarians, and animal shelters alike. The rising availability of affordable and user-friendly microchip implantation technology further fuels this growth. Moreover, successful animal reunification programs leveraging microchip databases effectively showcase the technology's value, incentivizing broader adoption. Several factors contribute to market segmentation, including the type of microchip used (passive vs. active), the animal species (dogs, cats, other), and the service provider (veterinary clinics, animal shelters, mobile services). Key players like Petco, Vets2Pets, and numerous independent veterinary clinics are actively shaping the market landscape. Growth is anticipated across diverse geographical regions, mirroring global trends in pet ownership and animal welfare initiatives. Challenges remain, however, including the cost of microchipping, potential complications associated with the procedure, and the need for improved database management and interoperability between different microchip registration systems. Addressing these challenges will be critical to unlocking the full potential of the market and ensuring widespread access to this essential pet identification technology.
