    Description

The average retail price for regular, unleaded gasoline at self-service stations in Canada was 157.7 Canadian cents per liter in February 2025. This was an increase compared to the previous month. Canada's gasoline prices are generally higher than those in the United States, but lower than in many European countries. Why do gasoline prices fluctuate? Crude oil prices, along with changing levels of consumer demand, are the two main factors which directly affect retail prices of motor fuels. Prices can witness a rapid increase or decrease depending on impacts on crude oil supplies, refinery operations, or pipeline deliveries. Even if crude prices remain steady, seasonal changes in demand can still affect retail prices. As a large oil producer, Canada's motor fuel prices are closely linked to its benchmark Western Canadian Select crude oil price. Canada's fuel station industry Motor fuel is primarily sold via nearly 12,000 retail gasoline stations spread across the country. In 2022, retail sales of gasoline stations in Canada reached a new peak of 82.78 billion Canadian dollars.

    Description

In June 2020, the gasoline price per liter in the United States stood at 0.55 U.S. dollars, the cheapest among the selected eight countries. However, this is a considerable price change compared to June 2019, when figures were 23.4 percent higher. Italy recorded the highest fuel price of all countries listed here, at 1.56 U.S. dollars per liter. The prices concern unleaded premium (95 RON) for France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom and regular unleaded for Canada, Japan, and the United States (AKI 87). Liquid fuels demand decline following coronavirusFinal gasoline prices result from crude oil charges, processing and distribution costs, and taxes and underly supply and demand. The ongoing coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) has reduced the demand for fuel and in turn impacted petroleum prices worldwide. The U.S. liquid fuels demand in the road sector is expected to have decreased to 8.7 million barrels per day in the second quarter of 2020. As a result, U.S. monthly crude oil production dropped across all regions between March and August 2020. Diesel prices worldwideItaly also has the greatest tag on diesel prices among the above listed countries. As of that same month, the price for automotive diesel stood at 1.43 U.S. dollars per liter in the Southern European country. Diesel prices tend to be lower than gasoline prices, with the United Kingdom and the U.S. proving to be the exception.

    Description

The 2025 annual OPEC oil price stood at 78.1 U.S. dollars per barrel, as of February. This would be lower than the 2024 average, which amounted to 79.86 U.S. dollars. The abbreviation OPEC stands for Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and includes Algeria, Angola, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, and the United Arab Emirates. The aim of the OPEC is to coordinate the oil policies of its member states. It was founded in 1960 in Baghdad, Iraq. The OPEC Reference Basket The OPEC crude oil price is defined by the price of the so-called OPEC (Reference) basket. This basket is an average of prices of the various petroleum blends that are produced by the OPEC members. Some of these oil blends are, for example: Saharan Blend from Algeria, Basra Light from Iraq, Arab Light from Saudi Arabia, BCF 17 from Venezuela, et cetera. By increasing and decreasing its oil production, OPEC tries to keep the price between a given maxima and minima. Benchmark crude oil The OPEC basket is one of the most important benchmarks for crude oil prices worldwide. Other significant benchmarks are UK Brent, West Texas Intermediate (WTI), and Dubai Crude (Fateh). Because there are many types and grades of oil, such benchmarks are indispensable for referencing them on the global oil market. The 2024 fall in prices was the result of weakened demand outlooks, primarily from China.

    Description

The average monthly price for natural gas in the United States amounted to 3.02 nominal U.S. dollars per million British thermal units (Btu) in December 2024. By contrast, natural gas prices in Europe were about four times higher than those in the U.S. Prices for Europe tend to be notably higher than those in the U.S. as the latter benefits from being a major hydrocarbon producer. Europe's import reliance European prices for natural gas rose most notable throughout the second half of 2021 and much of 2022, peaking at over 70 U.S. dollars per million Btu in August 2022. The sharp rise was due to supply chain issues and economic strain following the COVID-19 pandemic, which was further exacerbated by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in early 2022. As a result of the war, many countries began looking for alternative sources, and Russian pipeline gas imports to the European Union declined as a result. Meanwhile, LNG was a great beneficiary, with LNG demand in Europe rising by more than 60 percent between 2021 and 2023. How domestic natural gas production shapes prices As intimated, the United States’ position among the leaders of worldwide natural gas production is one of the main reasons for why prices for this commodity are so low across the country. In 2023, the U.S. produced more than one trillion cubic meters of natural gas, which allays domestic demand and allows for far lower purchasing prices.

Italian diesel vehicle drivers were paying an average of 1.42 U.S. dollars per liter for diesel fuel as of April 2020, while those in the United States were paying just 66 cents. There is also an inconsistency among countries when it comes to the monthly change in the price of automotive diesel. Canada’s prices decreased by 24 percent.Diesel vehicles on the decline Diesel vehicles were once a favorite of European drivers, but environmental concerns and regulatory changes have triggered a shift this has been changing in recent years. Between 2014 and 2018, the share of new passenger cars with diesel engines fell steeply across Europe. In Germany, shares dropped by approximately 48 percent during this period to 32 percent. This decline in popularity also had an impact on prices.
