Background: This study aimed to analyze the influence of ageist beliefs of practicing physical therapists (PTs) on their expectations concerning the behavior and outcomes of patients with orthopedic conditions. We hypothesized that stronger ageist beliefs would be related to expectations of worse outcomes and less treatment adherence in older patients compared to clinically identical younger patients.Methods: Seventy-one (71) practicing PTs with a mean age of 40 years (+/-10.44, range 24-67) were recruited via snowball sampling. Participants were randomly assigned a case involving either a 42-year-old (YCG) or an 85-year-old patient (OCG) s/p surgical repair of a femoral shaft fracture. Participants were asked questions related to their expectations concerning the patient’s clinical and functional outcomes, response and adherence to physical therapy, and patient responsibility for their own outcomes. To measure ageism, participants completed the Kogan Attitude Toward Old People Scale consisting of 34 paired (positive/negative) statements.

ABSTRACT Satisfaction is determined by the patient’s reaction to the service received, acting as a sensitive indicator of quality in medical care. The goal of this study was to compare the satisfaction of patients receiving outpatient physical therapy treatment in public clinics (PC), private healthcare clinics (PHC) and school clinics (SC). A total of 382 patients aged over 18 years old who had been to at least five appointments were divided into three groups. A questionnaire containing questions about sociodemographic data and overall satisfaction as well as satisfaction with the patient-therapist relationship, access to and support offered by the team, convenience and the environment was used. The majority of the patients was female (68.6%), their mean age being 52.0 years old. In the comparison of the services, the school clinic showed greater satisfaction rates than the public clinics in relation to the support team, convenience and physical environment; and greater satisfaction rates than the private healthcare clinics in relation the therapist-patient relationship and overall satisfaction. The private healthcare clinics were better evaluated than the public clinics in relation to convenience and physical environment. The correlation analysis between overall satisfaction and each variable showed good and moderate values for the therapist-patient relationship variable and the lowest values for the convenience variable. The questionnaire had good internal consistency and coherence for the three services (α≥0.94). These results represent an important indicator of the patients’ perception about the services investigated, allowing the proper implementation of public, private and academic policies aimed at the improvement of the quality of physical therapy care.

An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out among Physiotherapists collegiates in Spain, who have worked for at least 3 months in direct care with patients. The aim of this study is to know the percentage of physiotherapists suffering from type two violence (sexual, physical or psychological/verbal violence in their clinical role) in Spain, as well as professional, clinical or personal variables that might be related to violence prevalence against physiotherapists by patients or their relatives/companions. In addition, the responses offered by the physical therapists and their perception of the results obtained have been consulted, as well as any personal consequences at health and work.
The study was emailed though Physiotherapists´ Colleges and/or disseminated through their webs from January to March 2022. Data were collected through an online form. After being informed of the objectives of the study, they voluntarily completed the data though an anonymous questionnaire. Data confidentiality was ensured through the use of Microsoft Forms software (Microsoft Office, Microsoft Corporation, USA) pursuant to an agreement with the University of A Coruña. IntroductionShared decision-making is the cornerstone of patient-centered care. However, evidence suggests that the application of shared decision-making in physical therapy practice is limited. To elicit shared decision-making and thereby potentially improve patient outcomes for patients with intermittent claudication, we developed a decision support system. This decision support system provides personalized outcomes forecasts that visualize the estimated walking distance of an individual patient. We hypothesize that personalized outcomes forecasts can support physical therapists in personalizing care to the needs and priorities of the individual patient to improve therapy outcomes.Research objectivesThe primary aim is to evaluate the impact of personalized outcomes forecasts for patients with intermittent claudication to optimize personalized treatment. Second, this study aims to evaluate the process of implementation.MethodsThis study uses a prospective interrupted time series (ITS) design. Participating physical therapists are divided into four clusters. Every month of the study period, a new cluster will be invited to begin using the decision support system. We aim to include data of 11,250 newly referred patients for physical therapy treatment. All therapists associated with a network of specialized therapists (Chronic CareNet) and patients treated by these therapists are eligible to participate. The decision support system, called the KomPas, makes use of personalized outcomes forecasts, which visualize the estimated outcome of supervised exercise therapy for an individual patient with intermittent claudication. Personalized outcomes forecasts are developed using a neighbors-based approach that selects patients similar to the index patient (a.k.a. neighbors) from a large database. Outcomes to evaluate impact of implementation are patients’ functional and maximal walking distance, quality of life and shared decision-making. Process evaluation will be measured in terms of utilization efficacy, including the outcomes dropout rate and reasons to (not) use the personalized outcomes forecasts. Data will be routinely collected through two online systems: the Chronic CareNet Quality system, and the website logs of the decision support system. Self-efficacy is the strongest predictor of completing home exercise programs (HEPs). How physical therapists address low levels of self-efficacy is unknown. Our objectives were to determine (1) knowledge and confidence in addressing patients’ self-efficacy; (2) strategies used to address low self-efficacy; and (3) barriers. Licensed physical therapists who are actively treating patients in the United States participated in our mixed-methods study consisting of: (1) a survey on knowledge, barriers, and confidence; and (2) interviews on strategies used to address low self-efficacy. Descriptive statistics were calculated on all quantitative data. Braun and Clarke’s 6-phase thematic analysis was used for the qualitative data. All 37 participants believed that self-efficacy impacts HEP completion. The majority (72.9%) reported addressing low self-efficacy. Barriers that impacted the ability to address low self-efficacy (Theme 1) included lack of knowledge, confidence, tools, guidance, and community resources, patients’ past experiences and complexities, inability to follow-up with patients, and reimbursement. Due to these barriers, participants primarily addressed patients’ low self-efficacy via communication (Theme 2) and ensuring successful exercise completion (Theme 3). Instead of using Bandura’s fours sources of self-efficacy (i.e., mastery experiences, verbal persuasion, vicarious experiences, physiological state), participants verbalized addressing low self-efficacy via communication and successful exercise completion. Thus, implementation studies evaluating strategies to overcome the identified barriers are needed. Self-efficacy is the strongest predictor of completing home exercise programs (HEPs) as prescribed. Instead of using evidence-informed strategies, physical therapists primarily address low self-efficacy via communication and ensuring that patients complete exercises successfully by simplifying the exercises and repeating the exercises until able to do them without cues. Barriers that keep physical therapists from using evidence-informed strategies include lack of knowledge, confidence, tools, guidance, and community resources, patients’ past experiences and complexities, inability to follow-up with patients, and reimbursement. Physical therapists’ ability to address low self-efficacy and increase HEP completion, can be improved by resolving clinical barriers (i.e., lack of knowledge) with implementation strategies (i.e., training).

To cope with the changing healthcare environment, it is necessary to investigate the essential competencies in the clinical practice of physical therapists and to reflect these results in the physical therapy training process. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to provide basic data for the training of physical therapists and policy development by analyzing perceptions of the importance of physical therapists’ competencies and the frequency of the utilization of those competencies. We surveyed licensed physical therapists in Korea who had clinical experience in physical therapy using a Google questionnaire on mobile devices and PCs. A total of 296 (99.0%) of the 299 subjects responded to the survey questionnaires from September 16, 2019 to September 30, 2019.

ABSTRACT The physical therapist inclusion at urgency and emergency remains an unexplored scenario, even though it has been getting attention and relevance. Thus, this study aims to check multidisciplinary team perception on physical therapist inclusion at the emergency of a hospital. This is a descriptive study with quality-quantitative analysis. The convenience sample was composed of nurse technicians, nurses, physicians, resident physicians, multidisciplinary residents and health science scholars who work at the unit, totaling 41 professionals. A self-applicable questionnaire was used to collect data, with identification information, objective, and subjective questions regarding the topic of this study, which was developed and validated by the authors. The continuous variables were expressed in mean and standard deviation, whereas categorical variables were performed by frequencies. Data obtained in descriptive questions were organized and analyzed with the hermeneutic-dialectical method. After analysis, we observed that more than 85% of the team referred that the physical therapist is considered part of the emergency team, with all of them presenting a good relationship overall. Besides, they recognize the importance of the physical therapist and the positive result of physical therapist in respiratory and motion. Thus, it was verified that the multidisciplinary emergency team understands and recognizes the physical therapist performance as well as the positive aspects that physical therapy brings to the emergency treatment, showing a positive perception of such professionals.
