    Augmented Reality Gaming Market Outlook

According to our latest research, the global Augmented Reality (AR) Gaming market size reached USD 9.8 billion in 2024, with a robust compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 28.7% expected through the forecast period. By 2033, the market is projected to reach USD 84.2 billion. This exceptional growth is primarily attributed to technological advancements in AR hardware and software, the proliferation of high-speed internet and 5G connectivity, and the increasing adoption of immersive gaming experiences among a broad demographic of consumers worldwide.

The remarkable expansion of the augmented reality gaming market is primarily driven by the rising integration of AR technology into mainstream consumer devices, particularly smartphones and tablets. As mobile device manufacturers continue to embed advanced sensors and cameras, the accessibility and quality of AR gaming experiences have significantly improved. Furthermore, the widespread adoption of 5G networks has dramatically reduced latency and enhanced data speeds, allowing for smoother, more interactive, and real-time AR gameplay. The popularity of high-profile AR games such as Pokémon GO has also heightened consumer interest and demonstrated the commercial viability of AR gaming, encouraging further investment and innovation in this sector.

Another significant growth factor for the augmented reality gaming market is the continuous evolution of AR software development tools and platforms. Game developers now have access to sophisticated AR development kits from major technology companies, enabling the creation of more complex and engaging AR games. These tools support advanced features such as spatial mapping, gesture recognition, and multiplayer functionality, which have become essential for delivering immersive gaming experiences. The influx of venture capital and strategic partnerships among gaming studios, technology providers, and entertainment companies has further accelerated the pace of innovation in AR gaming, resulting in a diverse range of game genres and applications that cater to various user preferences.

The increasing demand for social and collaborative gaming experiences is also fueling the growth of the augmented reality gaming market. AR games often leverage real-world environments and social interactions, allowing players to engage with their surroundings and with each other in new and exciting ways. This trend is particularly pronounced among younger demographics, who seek interactive and shareable gaming experiences that blend the digital and physical worlds. The rise of location-based AR games, multiplayer AR experiences, and AR-powered esports events is expected to sustain the market’s momentum and drive further adoption across different regions and user segments.

Regionally, North America holds the largest share of the augmented reality gaming market, driven by a strong gaming culture, early adoption of emerging technologies, and a robust ecosystem of AR hardware and software developers. Asia Pacific is rapidly catching up, propelled by a massive base of mobile gamers, increasing smartphone penetration, and significant investments in AR infrastructure. Europe follows closely, with a growing number of AR gaming startups and favorable government initiatives supporting digital innovation. Latin America and the Middle East & Africa are also witnessing steady growth, albeit at a slower pace, as AR gaming becomes more accessible through affordable devices and expanding network coverage.

    Component Analysis

The augmented reality gaming market is segmented by component into hardware, software, and services, each playing a critical role in shaping the overall market landscape. Hardware forms the backbone of AR gaming, encompassing devices such as AR-enabled smartphones, smart glasses, head-mounted displays, and sensors. The hardware segment has witnessed significant advancements in recent years,

Mobile gaming has become a huge industry, with successful game developers in line to generate millions from their mobile games. In March 2021, Roblox was the top grossing iPhone gaming app in the United States, generating daily revenues of over 3.09 million U.S. dollars. Second-ranked Candy Crush Saga grossed approximately 2.03 million U.S. dollars per day. Pokémon GO was ranked seventh with a daily gross of more than 463,000 U.S. dollars

Pokémon GO - a global phenomenon
Pokémon GO is a massively multiplayer location-based mobile video game which uses augmented reality. The project is jointly created by The Pokémon Company and Niantic and has been available since July 2016 on the iOS and Android platforms. Just like in the video game series, the goal is to capture Pokémon and battle it out against other trainers. In 2020, Pokémon GO player spending hit 916.5 million U.S. dollars worldwide, which was the mobile app’s most profitable year since launching in 2016, when it grossed approximately 588.77 million U.S. dollars. The location-based augmented reality (AR) game involves catching, training, and battling virtual creatures (Pokémon) in real-world locations via smartphone. While the initial Pokémon craze has slowly faded, the game still enjoys growing numbers of active users around the world and in the Asia-Pacific region in particular.

    Online app stores
With individual gaming apps generating millions of dollars of revenue on a daily basis, it is no surprise that app stores are also raking in the revenue. In the second quarter of 2020, Google Play Store recorded gross revenues of 7.7 billion U.S. dollars from mobile games, up from 6.9 billion generated in the previous quarter. The numbers for Apple's App Store were even more impressive, with revenue from mobile games on its iOS platform reaching 33.2 billion U.S. dollars worldwide in 2018. Interestingly, despite Apple's App Store leading the way in terms of revenue, Google Play recorded significantly more mobile game downloads in 2018. A total of 38.3 billion mobile games were downloaded globally across both app stores in that year, out of which the vast majority, 29.4 billion downloads in total, were attributed to Google Play.

    Description

In a world where people are constantly on the move and seeking new forms of entertainment to make their journeys go faster, mobile gaming is bigger than ever. In September 2019, Google Play Games was the most popular mobile gaming related app in the United States with over 18.74 million monthly users. The highest individual game on the list was Pokémon GO, which averaged 10.66 million users in the same month.

Google Play Games Google Play Games is an online gaming service developed for Android. It allows users to develop their profiles, share their achievements, and see how they are faring on global leaderboards. Users with Google phones can also use the Google Play Store to download new gaming apps – a total of almost 30 billion downloads were carried out in the store worldwide in 2018, over three times the amount of Apple’s App Store. The leading mobile gaming app on the Google Play Store worldwide is Candy Crush Saga. The legendary puzzle game generated revenue of over 67 million U.S. dollars in January 2019. Given that the game is free to play, how has the game’s developer, King, made it into such a commercial success?

Sweet success of Candy Crush Saga First released by King in April 2012 for Facebook, Candy Crush swiftly became a global phenomenon that took over smartphones around the world. Despite now being over seven years old, it still ranks very highly among other gaming apps based on the revenue it generates. While the game itself is free to download and play, users are offered tempting in-game purchases in the form of power-ups to help them get past particularly tricky levels. It seems that many people have relied on this help as almost one billion U.S. dollars was spent by players on the original Candy Crush Saga worldwide in 2018. Over 500 million U.S. dollars was spent on the various spin-offs of the game, leaving it in no doubt that Candy Crush has been a sweet success for King.
