</ul>Unemployment refers to the share of the labor force that is without work but available for and seeking employment.
In April 2025, the unemployment rate in Poland amounted to 5.2 percent, which was a slight decrease compared to the previous month. According to the Central Statistical Office (GUS), the number of job offers submitted to labor offices increased. Characteristics of unemployed people in Poland At the end of 2023, the number of unemployed Poles reached 788,000. Throughout 2008 and 2023, the number of unemployed Poles with lower secondary and incomplete primary education decreased. However, they remain in the top percent of unemployed people in the country. Unemployment is more severe among people at a young age. In 2023, the age groups 25-34 and 35-44 were leading and shared similar numbers, amounting to around 219,000 people unemployed. Taking gender into account, in Poland, there were 42,000 more women on registered unemployment than men. Job offers and requirements in Poland In November 2024, the number of monthly job offers submitted to labor offices had decreased slightly, which caused better prospects for the unemployed Poles. On the other hand, in December 2023, there were over 97,000 vacancies. However, one of the most required skills for job application in Poland was an experience. The following requirement for job application on online platforms was education.
The unemployment rate decreased from 9.5 percent in 2008 to 5.1 percent in December 2024. The highest registered unemployment rate was recorded in 2012 and 2013 at 13.4 percent. Unemployment in Poland In 2022, more than 15.2 million people were working in Poland, and the employment rate has increased by 14.3 percentage points since 2010. As a result, Poland also registered one of the lowest unemployment rates in the European Union. The average level of unemployment in the EU in 2023 was six percent. In Poland, it was 2.8 percent. Podkarpackie voivodeship (8.6 percent) registered the highest level of unemployment. On the contrary, the lowest rate was recorded in Wielkopolskie voivodeship (three percent). The most significant difficulties in finding a job in 2022 were experienced by young people — aged 35 to 44 years and those with lower secondary and incomplete primary education. Women were also more likely to have unemployed status than men. Nevertheless, looking for a new job in Poland is relatively short and depends on age. People aged over 50 observed the longest period of searching for a new job. Economic emigration Poland has struggled with a high emigration rate since the labor transition period. However, since 2016, the migration balance has been improving, and the number of people emigrating from Poland is slowly stabilizing. Despite low unemployment, increasing job offers, and a strengthening labor market, 16.9 percent of Poles were considering economic emigration in February 2023. The people who most often go abroad to work are manual workers. Six out of 10 people had elementary, vocational, or secondary education. The prevailing reason for leaving was higher wages than those offered at home. Germany and the Netherlands were the most popular countries for working abroad in 2023.

Economy of Poland Poland holds the sixth largest economy and is the ninth most populated country in the EU, with the country’s population remaining relatively stagnant over the past decade. Poland’s economy has maintained rather strong and stable, and its GDP was reported to have grown over the past several years, despite being affected by the global recession of 2009. Various factors that attributed to the fast recovery and maintenance of Poland’s economy were a large market as well as multiple economic transformations that were essentially introduced to help with the country’s transition from the fall of communism. Additionally, Poland sustained a low level of debt, particularly in comparison with the country’s gross domestic product, which indicates that Poland is capable of paying back its debts without incurring further debt. Poland primarily trades with its European neighbors, most prominently Germany. Imports within the country consist mainly of goods that are used for manufacturing and as a result, Poland reported a trade balance deficit. However, since these goods are used for the further development of the country rather than for consumption, a trade balance deficit is seen as acceptable and rather positive than negative. Today, Poland’s industry is principally focused on machinery, electronics and car manufacturing and has several large mining reserves available for export and further reconstruction within the country.
