Over the past 10 years, the highest number of inhabitants in Denmark lived in the Capital Region. As of the first quarter of 2024, over 1.9 million people lived in the Danish Capital Region. The second highest number of inhabitants was found in the Central Denmark Region, followed by the Region of Southern Denmark. Meanwhile, les than 600,000 people live in Northern Denmark. The population in all Danish regions increased over the past years.

Context

The dataset tabulates the Denmark population by age cohorts (Children: Under 18 years; Working population: 18-64 years; Senior population: 65 years or more). It lists the population in each age cohort group along with its percentage relative to the total population of Denmark. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population distribution across children, working population and senior population for dependency ratio, housing requirements, ageing, migration patterns etc.

There are some differences between the educational attainment levels of men and women in Denmark. However, in 2023, the most common type of education finished among both genders was vocational education and training programs. A higher share of men than women had completed this type of education. Moreover, there were also more men than women who had completed a primary education as their highest educational level, which was the second most common type of education completed by both genders. Meanwhile, whereas more than 21 percent of women had completed vocational bachelor's programs, only 11 percent of men had the same.

The number of female inhabitants was constantly slightly higher than the number of men and amounted to about three million as of January 1, 2024, compared to 2.96 million male inhabitants.

Average age of the Danish population

Since 2005, the Danish population’s average age gradually increased. In this time period, the average age of women was constantly a little higher than that of men. As of January 2023, female inhabitants had an average age of 43.1 years, while male inhabitants on average were 41.4 years old.

In the past decade, the Norwegian population also grew constantly. In 2023, the number of inhabitants reached nearly 5.5 million. In the neighboring country Sweden, the number of inhabitants increased as well, rising from 9.42 million in 2010 to nearly 10.55 million in 2023.
