Web Map Service that supports the IRENA Global Atlas for Renewable EnergyThe LandScan 2018 Global Population Database was developed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) for the United States Department of Defense (DoD).ORNL’s LandScan™ is a community standard for global population distribution data. At approximately 1 km (30″ X 30″) spatial resolution, it represents an ambient population (average over 24 hours) distribution. The database is refreshed annually and released to the broader user community around October. LandScan™ is now available at no cost to the educational community. The latest LandScan™ dataset available is LandScan Global 2018. Older LandScan Global data sets (LandScan 1998, 2000-2017) are available through site. These data set can be licensed for commercial and other applications through multiple third-party vendors. LandScan is developed using best available demographic (Census) and geographic data, remote sensing imagery analysis techniques within a multivariate dasymetric modeling framework to disaggregate census counts within an administrative boundary. Since no single population distribution model can account for the differences in spatial data availability, quality, scale, and accuracy as well as the differences in cultural settlement practices, LandScan population distribution is essentially a combination of locally adoptive models that are tailored to match the data conditions and geographical nature of each individual country and region.

Census data reveals that population density varies noticeably from area to area. Small area census data do a better job depicting where the crowded neighborhoods are. In this map, the yellow areas of highest density range from 30,000 to 150,000 persons per square kilometer. In those areas, if the people were spread out evenly across the area, there would be just 4 to 9 meters between them. Very high density areas exceed 7,000 persons per square kilometer. High density areas exceed 5,200 persons per square kilometer. The last categories break at 3,330 persons per square kilometer, and 1,500 persons per square kilometer. This dataset is comprised of multiple sources. This map shows density surfaces derived from the 2010 US Census block points. This data shows % of people who identified themselves as single race and whiteThe block points were interpolated using the density function to a 2km x 2km grid of the continental US (with water and coastal data masks). There are many stories in these Maps:- What is that clean North/South Line through the center? Why do so many people live East of that line?- Notice the paths of the towns in the west – why are they so linear? And it seems there is a pattern to the spaces between the towns, why?- Looking at the ethnic maps, what explains the patterns? Look at the % Native American map – what are the areas of higher values? (note I did not make a % Asian map as at this scale there was not enough % to show any significant clusters.)

    Description

From the AfriPop website..."High resolution, contemporary data on human population distributions are a prerequisite for the accurate measurement of the impacts of population growth, for monitoring changes and for planning interventions. The AfriPop project was initiated in July 2009 with an aim of producing detailed and freely-available population distribution maps for the whole of Africa. Based on the approaches outlined in detail here and here, and summarized on the methods page, fine resolution satellite imagery-derived settlement maps are combined with land cover maps to reallocate contemporary census-based spatial population count data. Assessments have shown that the resultant maps are more accurate than existing population map products, as well as the simple gridding of census data. Moreover, the 100m spatial resolution represents a finer mapping detail than has ever before been produced at national extents. The approaches used in AfriPop dataset production are designed with operational application in mind, using simple and semi-automated methods to produce easily updatable maps. Given the speed with which population growth and urbanisation are occurring across much of Africa, and the impacts these are having on the economies, environments and health of nations, such features are a necessity for both research and operational applications."Data Source: AfriPop.org

    Description

Mapping population distribution remains a common need in various fields of studies. Several approaches and methodologies have been adopted to obtain high-resolution population distribution grids. The use of addresses data to obtain gridded population distribution maps emerges as one of the more recent and accurate approaches. The increasing dissemination and availability of geo-data and more specifically address data allow us to obtain updated, granular and high spatial resolution population distribution maps. This paper describes a bottom-up open addresses data mapping-based approach of gridded population distribution with a fine spatial resolution. Through a QGIS plugin, an adaptation of the housing unit methodology was implemented to obtain 500 m × 500 and 250 m × 250 m population grids for mainland Portugal. The results showed that the use of reliable addresses databases can generate gridded population distribution maps with a high degree of adjustment to reality.

    Description

The Global Population Density Grid Time Series Estimates provide a back-cast time series of population density grids based on the year 2000 population grid from SEDAC's Global Rural-Urban Mapping Project, Version 1 (GRUMPv1) data set. The grids were created by using rates of population change between decades from the coarser resolution History Database of the Global Environment (HYDE) database to back-cast the GRUMPv1 population density grids. Mismatches between the spatial extent of the HYDE calculated rates and GRUMPv1 population data were resolved via infilling rate cells based on a focal mean of values. Finally, the grids were adjusted so that the population totals for each country equaled the UN World Population Prospects (2008 Revision) estimates for that country for the respective year (1970, 1980, 1990, and 2000). These data do not represent census observations for the years prior to 2000, and therefore can at best be thought of as estimations of the populations in given locations. The population grids are consistent internally within the time series, but are not recommended for use in creating longer time series with any other population grids, including GRUMPv1, Gridded Population of the World, Version 4 (GPWv4), or non-SEDAC developed population grids. These population grids served as an input to SEDAC's Global Estimated Net Migration Grids by Decade: 1970-2000 data set.

    Description

This archive reproduces a figure titled "Figure 3.2 Boone County population distribution" from Wang and vom Hofe (2007, p.60). The archive provides a Jupyter Notebook that uses Python and can be run in Google Colaboratory. The workflow uses the Census API to retrieve data, reproduce the figure, and ensure reproducibility for anyone accessing this archive. The Python code was developed in Google Colaboratory, or Google Colab for short, which is an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) of JupyterLab and streamlines package installation, code collaboration, and management. The Census API is used to obtain population counts from the 2000 Decennial Census (Summary File 1, 100% data). Shapefiles are downloaded from the TIGER/Line FTP Server. All downloaded data are maintained in the notebook's temporary working directory while in use. The data and shapefiles are stored separately with this archive. The final map is also stored as an HTML file. The notebook features extensive explanations, comments, code snippets, and code output. The notebook can be viewed in a PDF format or downloaded and opened in Google Colab. References to external resources are also provided for the various functional components. The notebook features code that performs the following functions:install/import necessary Python packagesdownload the Census Tract shapefile from the TIGER/Line FTP Serverdownload Census data via CensusAPI manipulate Census tabular data merge Census data with TIGER/Line shapefileapply a coordinate reference systemcalculate land area and population densitymap and export the map to HTMLexport the map to ESRI shapefileexport the table to CSVThe notebook can be modified to perform the same operations for any county in the United States by changing the State and County FIPS code parameters for the TIGER/Line shapefile and Census API downloads. The notebook can be adapted for use in other environments (i.e., Jupyter Notebook) as well as reading and writing files to a local or shared drive, or cloud drive (i.e., Google Drive).

    Description

Contained within the 3rd Edition (1957) of the Atlas of Canada is a plate that shows the distribution of population in what is now Canada circa 1851, 1871, 1901, 1921 and 1941. The five maps display the boundaries of the various colonies, provinces and territories for each date. Also shown on these five maps are the locations of principal cities and settlements. These places are shown on all of the maps for reference purposes even though they may not have been in existence in the earlier years. Each map is accompanied by a pie chart providing the percentage distribution of Canadian population by province and territory corresponding to the date the map is based on. It should be noted that the pie chart entitled Percentage Distribution of Total Population, 1851, refers to the whole of what was then British North America. The name Canada in this chart refers to the province of Canada which entered confederation in 1867 as Ontario and Quebec. The other pie charts, however, show only percentage distribution of population in what was Canada at the date indicated. Three additional graphs are included on this plate and show changes in the distribution of the population of Canada from 1867 to 1951, changes in the percentage distribution of the population of Canada by provinces and territories from 1867 to 1951 and elements in the growth of the population of Canada for each ten-year period from 1891 to 1951.

    Description

Spatially accurate, contemporary data on human population distributions are vitally important to many applied and theoretical researchers. The Southeast Asia region has undergone rapid urbanization and population growth over the past decade, yet existing spatial population distribution datasets covering the region are based principally on population count data from censuses circa 2000, with often insufficient spatial resolution or input data to map settlements precisely. Here we outline approaches to construct a database of GIS-linked circa 2010 census data and methods used to construct fine-scale (∼100 meters spatial resolution) population distribution datasets for each country in the Southeast Asia region. Landsat-derived settlement maps and land cover information were combined with ancillary datasets on infrastructure to model population distributions for 2010 and 2015. These products were compared with those from two other methods used to construct commonly used global population datasets. Results indicate mapping accuracies are consistently higher when incorporating land cover and settlement information into the AsiaPop modelling process. Using existing data, it is possible to produce detailed, contemporary and easily updatable population distribution datasets for Southeast Asia. The 2010 and 2015 datasets produced are freely available as a product of the AsiaPop Project and can be downloaded from: www.asiapop.org.
