    En 2021, la population totale de l'oblast de Donetsk s'élevait à environ *** millions d'habitants, tandis que l'oblast de Louhansk avait une population d'environ *** millions d'habitants. La population des deux régions ukrainiennes est en baisse depuis 1989.

    En avril 2014, les deux régions se sont proclamées républiques indépendantes de l'Est de l'Ukraine, mais ne jouissent pas d'une reconnaissance internationale. La Russie s'est également longtemps abstenue de les reconnaître en tant qu'États indépendants.

    Le ** février 2022, la presse internationale a toutefois annoncé que Poutine reconnaissait les régions séparatistes de Louhansk et de Donetsk - une violation claire des accords de Minsk et un coup dur pour tous les efforts diplomatiques dans le conflit russo-ukrainien. L'objectif des accords de Minsk de 2015 était de parvenir à une désescalade et à une pacification du conflit qui sévit depuis 2014 dans l'est de l'Ukraine.

    Le Haut-Commissariat des Nations Unies aux droits de l'homme (HCDH) a vérifié plus de 30.010 victimes civiles dans le pays : 12.605 tués et 29.178 blessés depuis le début de l'attaque militaire russe contre l'Ukraine en février 2022, jusqu'en janvier 2025. Toutefois, le HCDH a précisé que les chiffres réels pourraient être plus élevés. L'attaque de l‘armée russe Le 24 février 2022. Vladimir Poutine annonce le lancement d’une « opération militaire spéciale ». Rapidement, les premiers bombardements sur les principales villes ukrainiennes sont lancés et les troupes russes envahissent le pays. Les forces en opposition sont largement à la faveur du géant russe, doté d’une flotte aérienne près de dix fois supérieures et d’une artillerie beaucoup plus puissante. Ces dernières années le budget militaire russe a fortement augmenté, passant de 30 milliards en 2004 à 80 milliards de dollars en 2016. La Russie est d'ailleurs une puissance militaire de premier plan puisqu'elle était le quatrème pays en dépenses militaires en 2020, derrière l’Inde, la Chine et les États-Unis. Cependant au cours de cette attaque de nombreuses pertes militaires sont à déplorer pour l’armée russe, plus de 2.700 appareils auraient été détruits ou capturés au 12 avril. Les conséquences du conflit en Europe L’Ukraine ne faisant pas partie des membres de l’OTAN, aucune mesure militaire n’a été prise contre la Russie. Cependant, afin de déstabiliser l’envahisseur, une série de mesures a été prise par la communauté internationale. Les sanctions économiques ont rapidement eu des effets sur l’économie russe. Le cours du rouble s’est effondré en mars 2022, atteignant un niveau historiquement bas. Ce conflit et ces sanctions entraîneront également des répercussions sur l'économie de l’Europe, qui dépend en majorité des hydrocarbures russes transportés via pipeline et gazoduc, transitant notamment par l'Ukraine. La guerre a également engendré une vague d'immigration de la population ukrainienne qui se réfugie dans les pays d'Europe, principalement en Pologne, pour fuir le conflit.

    Cette statistique représente le nombre de réfugiés ukrainiens bénéficiant du statut de protection temporaire par pays en Europe suite à l'invasion de la Russie entre décembre 2024 et février 2025. La majorité des réfugiés ukrainiens sont allés vers les pays voisins. Les nombreux combats qui ont lieu dans les régions du Donbass et Louhansk, deux régions comptant une forte minorité russophone, a engendré un exode massif vers le voisin russe. Cependant, la majorité des Ukrainiens se sont réfugiés à l'ouest, notamment en Allemagne qui en a accueilli plus de 1,1 million. En février 2025, la France avait accueilli près de 55.000 réfugiés ukrainiens bénéficiant du statut de protection temporaire.

En 2021, la population totale de l'oblast de Donetsk s'élevait à environ *** millions d'habitants, tandis que l'oblast de Louhansk avait une population d'environ *** millions d'habitants. La population des deux régions ukrainiennes est en baisse depuis 1989.

En avril 2014, les deux régions se sont proclamées républiques indépendantes de l'Est de l'Ukraine, mais ne jouissent pas d'une reconnaissance internationale. La Russie s'est également longtemps abstenue de les reconnaître en tant qu'États indépendants.

Le ** février 2022, la presse internationale a toutefois annoncé que Poutine reconnaissait les régions séparatistes de Louhansk et de Donetsk - une violation claire des accords de Minsk et un coup dur pour tous les efforts diplomatiques dans le conflit russo-ukrainien. L'objectif des accords de Minsk de 2015 était de parvenir à une désescalade et à une pacification du conflit qui sévit depuis 2014 dans l'est de l'Ukraine.
