    Projections estimate that the population in Italy will decrease in the following years. In January 2025, the Italian population added up to 59 million people, but in 2030 Italians will be 58 million individuals. Twenty years later, the population will be around 52 million people. Low birth rate and old population The birth rate in Italy has constantly dropped in the last years. In 2023, 6.4 children were born per 1,000 inhabitants, three babies less than in 2002. Nationwide, the highest number of births was registered in the southern regions, whereas central Italy had the lowest number of children born every 1,000 people. More specifically, the birth rate in the south stood at 7 infants, while in the center it was equal to 5.9 births. Consequently, the population in Italy has aged over the last decade. Between 2002 and 2024, the age distribution of the Italian population showed a growing share of people aged 65 years and older. As a result, the share of young people decreased. The European exception Similarly, the population in Europe is estimated to decrease in the coming years. In 2024, there were 740 million people living in Europe. In 2100, the figure is expected to drop to 586 million inhabitants. However, projections of the world population suggest that Europe might be the only continent experiencing a population decrease. For instance, the population in Africa could grow from 1.41 billion people in 2022 to 3.92 billion individuals in 2100, the fastest population growth worldwide.

    Description

    projected population total, broken down by age and sex, for 2030, 2040, and 2050. They are benchmarked on the 2020 Decennial Census Count data from the U.S. Census Bureau to reflect the effect of the latest demographic trends on the future population. These projections were produced and released by the Cooper Center on July 1, 2024.

    The Cooper Center projections research is widely used and well received; this data has been cited by a diverse range of organizations including many federal agencies, state legislatures, businesses, non-profits, think-tanks, academic institutions, and the media. The last vintage of projections for 2020 were found to be highly accurate when evaluated and compared to the actual Census Count data.

    Description

    As a part of DVRPC's long-range planning activities, the Commission is required to maintain forecasts with at least a 20-year horizon. DVRPC has updated forecasts through the horizon year of the 2050 Long-Range Plan. The 2050 Version 2.0 Population and Employment Forecasts (2050 Version 2.0, v2.0) were adopted by the DVRPC Board on October 24, 2024, They update the 2050 v1.0 forecasts with a new county-level age-cohort model and new base data from the 2020 Decennial Census, 2020 Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), and 2021 National Establishments Time Series (NETS). The age-cohort model calculates the future population for five-year age-sex cohorts using the 2020 Census base population and anticipated birth, death, and migration rates. These anticipated rates were developed using historic birth and death records from New Jersey and Pennsylvania state health department data, as well as historic net migration data, calculated from decennial census data. Employment forecasts were developed by multiplying population forecasts by a ratio of working age population to jobs, calculated from 2022 ACS and BEA data.

    The municipal and TAZ forecasts use the growth factors from the v1.0 forecasts, scaled to the new county and regional population totals from the age-cohort model. While the forecast is not adopted at the transportation analysis zone (TAZ) level, it is allocated to these zones for use in DVRPC's travel demand model, and conforms to municipal/district level adopted totals. This data provides TAZ-level population and employment. Other travel model attributes are available upon request.

    DVRPC has prepared regional- and county-level population and employment forecasts in five-year increments for years 2020-2050. 2019 land use model results are also available. A forthcoming Analytical Data Report will document the forecasting process and methodologies.

    Whereas the population is expected to decrease somewhat until 2100 in Asia, Europe, and South America, it is predicted to grow significantly in Africa. While there were 1.55 billion inhabitants on the continent at the beginning of 2025, the number of inhabitants is expected to reach 3.81 billion by 2100. In total, the global population is expected to reach nearly 10.18 billion by 2100. Worldwide population In the United States, the total population is expected to steadily increase over the next couple of years. In 2024, Asia held over half of the global population and is expected to have the highest number of people living in urban areas in 2050. Asia is home to the two most populous countries, India and China, both with a population of over one billion people. However, the small country of Monaco had the highest population density worldwide in 2024. Effects of overpopulation Alongside the growing worldwide population, there are negative effects of overpopulation. The increasing population puts a higher pressure on existing resources and contributes to pollution. As the population grows, the demand for food grows, which requires more water, which in turn takes away from the freshwater available. Concurrently, food needs to be transported through different mechanisms, which contributes to air pollution. Not every resource is renewable, meaning the world is using up limited resources that will eventually run out. Furthermore, more species will become extinct which harms the ecosystem and food chain. Overpopulation was considered to be one of the most important environmental issues worldwide in 2020.

    Description

    This dataset contains tabular data at county, municipal/planning district, and zonal levels for the Adopted 2050 v1.0 Population & Employment Forecasts. DVRPC uses 2050 v1.0 to as the forecast vintage nomenclature, as it is the first forecast to use 2050 as a horizon year. Analytical Data Report (ADR 21014) documents the forecasting process and methodologies.

    As a part of DVRPC’s long-range planning activities, the Commission is required to maintain forecasts with at least a 20-year horizon, or to the horizon year of the long-range plan. Allocation of growth is forecasted using a land use model, UrbanSim, and working closely with member county planning staffs. DVRPC has prepared regional, county, and municipal-level population and employment forecasts in five-year increments through 2050, using 2015 Census population estimates and 2015 National Establishments Time Series (NETS) employment data as the base.

    Note: while 2019 land use model results are provided, the forecast was only adopted for 2015, 2020, 2025, 2030, 2035, 2040, 2045, and 2050.

    While the forecast is not adopted at the transportation analysis zone (TAZ) level, nor for intervening years between those ending in "0" or "5", it is allocated to these zones for use in DVRPC’s travel demand model in our UrbanSim land use model. TAZ data conforms to municipal/district level adopted totals for population and employment. It also generates a number of other attributes required for the travel demand model.

    Description

    EUROPOP2023 are the latest Eurostat long-term population projections produced at national level for 30 countries: all 27 European Union (EU) Member States and three European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries (Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland), covering the time horizon from 2022 to 2100. Population projections are 'what-if scenario' that aim to show the hypothetically developments of the population size and structure based on a set of assumptions regarding fertility, mortality, and net migration. They are presented for a long time period that covers more than a half-century (50 years).

    The datasets consist of the baseline population projections and five sensitivity tests, which are described as follows:

    • no migration – it is assumed that net migration is zero for each year within the 2023-2100 time horizon;
    • lower migration – it is assumed that the net migration is lower due to a 33% reduction in non-EU immigration flows for each year within the 2023-2100 time horizon;
    • higher migration – it is assumed that the net migration is higher due to a 33% increase in non-EU immigration flows for each year within the 2023-2100 time horizon;
    • lower fertility it is assumed that the fertility rates are lower 20% than the baseline assumptions for each year within the 2023-2100 time horizon;
    • lower mortality it is assumed that the mortality rates are lower resulting in an increase of approximately two years in life expectancy at birth by 2070 compared to the baseline assumptions.

    In each sensitivity test, the assumptions for the year 2022 were maintained as in the baseline projections. This is because, for that year, there is a combination of observed data (i.e. beneficiaries on temporary protections at the end of December 2022), information from the national authorities, and forecasting.

    Data are available by single-year time interval, as detailed below:

    • Projected population on 1 January by age and sex;
    • Assumptions on future age-specific fertility rates, age-specific mortality rates and net migration levels;
    • Projected life expectancy by age (in completed years) and sex.

    Additionally, the demographic balances and indicators are available for the baseline projections and each of the five sensitive variants, including also:

    • Total numbers of the projected live births and deaths;
    • Projected population structure indicators including proportions of broad age groups in total population, age dependency ratios and median ages of the population (for each sex component).

    STP2024 are the short-term population projections covering the time horizon from 2023 to 2050, and produced at national level for 30 countries: all 27 European Union (EU) Member States and three European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries (Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland). Similar to long-term projections, these are 'what-if scenario' that aim to show the hypothetically developments of the population size and structure based on a set of assumptions regarding fertility, mortality and net migration. The latest demographic data published on Eurostat website, as of 06 September 2024, were used as input in building the assumptions, thereby including the published post-2021 census revisions and data related to the temporary protection granted to persons displaced from Ukraine due to Russia's invasion.

    The dataset (proj_stp24) includes data by single-year time interval for two types of projections:

    • Baseline projections:
      • Projected total population on 1 January, the working-age population (defined as persons aged from 15 to 74), and its share in the total population;
      • Assumptions on total fertility rates, life expectancy at birth by sex, and total net migration levels;
      • Total numbers of projected live births and deaths.
    • No migration sensitivity test it is assumed that the net migration is zero for each year within the 2024-2050 time horizon.
      • Projected total population on 1 January, the working-age population (defined as persons aged from 15to 74), and its share in the total population;
      • The 2023 net migration levels remain the same as in the baseline projections to reflect the nowcast data;

DVRPC has prepared regional, county, and municipal-level population and employment forecasts in five-year increments through 2050, using 2015 Census population estimates and 2015 National Establishments Time Series (NETS) employment data as the base. A forthcoming Analytical Data Report will document the forecasting process and methodologies.

    This data provides the municipal level forecast for our 8 counties outside of Philadelphia, and Planning District-level forecast within Philadelphia. Note: while 2019 land use model results are provided, the forecast was only adopted for 2015, 2020, 2025, 2030, 2035, 2040, 2045, and 2050.

    Description

    The West Africa Coastal Vulnerability Mapping: Population Projections, 2030 and 2050 data set is based on an unreleased working version of the Gridded Population of the World (GPW), Version 4, year 2010 population count raster but at a coarser 5 arc-minute resolution. Bryan Jones of Baruch College produced country-level projections based on the Shared Socioeconomic Pathway 4 (SSP4). SSP4 reflects a divided world where cities that have relatively high standards of living, are attractive to internal and international migrants. In low income countries, rapidly growing rural populations live on shrinking areas of arable land due to both high population pressure and expansion of large-scale mechanized farming by international agricultural firms. This pressure induces large migration flow to the cities, contributing to fast urbanization, although urban areas do not provide many opportUnities for the poor and there is a massive expansion of slums and squatter settlements. This scenario may not be the most likely for the West Africa region, but it has internal coherence and is at least plausible.

Furthermore, it is predicted to reach over 10 billion in 2060, before slowing again as global birth rates are expected to decrease. Moreover, it is still unclear to what extent global warming will have an impact on population development. A high share of the population increase is expected to happen on the African continent.
