    Description

In 1800, the region of present-day Iraq had an estimated population of just over one million people. The population of Iraq would grow slowly throughout the 19th century, reaching just over two million by the beginning of the 20th century. However, Iraq’s population would begin to rise rapidly in the 1920s, as modernization programs implemented by the British administration, aided by the discovery of oil in 1927, would see mortality rates fall and living standards rise for much of the country. As a result, Iraq would grow to have a population of just under seven million by the time of the Iraqi Republic's establishment in 1958. Population growth would continue to increase following the creation of the republic, doubling to fourteen million by the 1980s; according to these estimates, the Iran-Iraq War of the 1980s did little to change the trajectory of Iraq's population growth, nor did the Gulf War of 1990-1991, despite Iraq suffering up to half a million fatalities in these conflicts. Iraq's population growth did slow in the early 2000s however, with the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. While the initial invasion would see relatively few casualties (compared to previous conflicts), the resulting economic turmoil and political instability, combined with the rise of the Iraqi insurgency and civil war in the region, would cause population growth to slow for several years. Population growth would recover starting in the 2010s, and by 2020, Iraq is estimated to have a population of just over forty million.

    Measurement technique
To measure the rank and respective trends, we initially gathered data from the five most recent American Community Survey (ACS) 5-Year Estimates. We then analyzed and categorized the data for each of the origins / ancestries identified by the U.S. Census Bureau. It is possible that a small population exists but was not reported or captured due to limitations or variations in Census data collection and reporting. We ensured that the population estimates used in this dataset pertain exclusively to the identified origins / ancestries and do not rely on any ethnicity classification, unless explicitly required. For further information regarding these estimates, please feel free to reach out to us via email at research@neilsberg.com.

    About this dataset

    Context

This list ranks the 50 states in the United States by Iraqi population, as estimated by the United States Census Bureau. It also highlights population changes in each state over the past five years.

    Content

When available, the data consists of estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 5-Year Estimates, including:

    • 2019-2023 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates
    • 2014-2018 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates
    • 2009-2013 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates

    Variables / Data Columns

    • Rank by Iraqi Population: This column displays the rank of state in the United States by their Iraqi population, using the most recent ACS data available.
    • State: The State for which the rank is shown in the previous column.
    • Iraqi Population: The Iraqi population of the state is shown in this column.
    • % of Total State Population: This shows what percentage of the total state population identifies as Iraqi. Please note that the sum of all percentages may not equal one due to rounding of values.
    • % of Total United States Iraqi Population: This tells us how much of the entire United States Iraqi population lives in that state. Please note that the sum of all percentages may not equal one due to rounding of values.
    • 5 Year Rank Trend: This column displays the rank trend across the last 5 years.
