This statistic shows the biggest cities in Ecuador in 2022. In 2022, approximately **** million people lived in Guayaquil, making it the biggest city in Ecuador.
This statistic shows the total population of Ecuador from 2020 to 2022, with projections up until 2030. In 2022, the total population of Ecuador amounted to approximately 17.72 million inhabitants. Ecuador's population The population of Ecuador continues to increase slowly but steadily. In 2014, the total population of Ecuador amounted to around 16 million. Yet, the population growth rate has been decreasing slightly since 2008. This means that more people have died than were born and/or more people have migrated out of as opposed to into the country. The fertility rate has been decreasing as well; ten years ago the fertility rate stood at around 3 children per woman, but today it stands at around 2.5 children per woman. This decrease has likely caused the slump in the population growth rate, even though it still remains above the natural replacement rate of 2, causing the population to still grow overall. Further, Ecuador’s life expectancy is around 76 years nowadays, with the percentage of adults aged over 65 years being less than seven percent (451305). The population of Ecuador is quite young, with about a third of the population under 14 years of age. The population is spread all over the country: Guayaquil and Quito are the largest cities in Ecuador and home to close to 4 million people combined. All other cities are smaller and the majority of them inhabit less than 250,000 people.

A long-term study of a common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) population inhabiting the Gulf of Guayaquil, Ecuador (2°33′ S, 79°20′W), has been carried out for almost 30 years. Similarly, as in other parts of the world, this population is structured socially and spatially in well-defined subunits or communities. Two of these communities, referred to as Posorja and El Morro, have been studied with major intensity in the last 10 years in the western inner estuary, among others to calculate population parameters that allow assessing their viability in time. Calculated parameters include annual abundance, age and sex composition, annual crude birth rate, calf survival, calf production interval, and average annual mortality/emigration. With these parameters and others derived from other better-studied populations, the trend of both subunits was modeled using the software Vortex. Results show that even under an optimistic scenery both communities will be extinct in the short (Posorja) and mid-term (El Morro), if current stressors continue. Most population parameters calculated in both communities show similar values as in populations elsewhere, but a very low calf survival in Posorja and high mortality/emigration ratios in adults, and probably in juveniles in both communities, contribute to this trend. Population deterioration seems to be the result of different human-induced threats such as fisheries, maritime traffic and others still not well assessed, as well as stochastic demographic events. We recommend taking actions in the short term to halt population decline addressing the major causes of mortality affecting these dolphin communities.

The bottlenose dolphin is one of the most common cetaceans found in the coastal waters, estuaries, and mangroves of Ecuador. However, its population size is gradually declining in the Gulf of Guayaquil, and anthropogenic factors including habitat degradation, uncontrolled dolphin watching, dredging activities, increasing maritime traffic, underwater noise, bycatch, and marine pollution have been implicated in their decline. Very little is known about contamination by persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and mercury in bottlenose dolphins from the Pacific coast of South America. To address this research gap, the first assessment of total mercury (THg) and POPs, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), in free-ranging bottlenose dolphins in mangroves (El Morro Mangrove Wildlife Refuge) of the Gulf of Guayaquil, was conducted in Ecuador in 2018. Dolphin samples (i.e., skin and blubber; n = 9), were obtained using dart biopsy field methods for contaminant analysis. POP concentrations ranged from 0.56 to 13.0 mg/kg in lipid weight, while THg ranged from 1.92 to 3.63 mg/kg in dry weight. The predominant POPs were OCPs (50% of ΣPOP), followed by PCBs (46%) and PBDEs (6.0%); particularly, p,p′-DDE, the main DDT metabolite and a potent anti-androgenic, accounting for 42% of ΣPOP, ranging from 0.12 to ∼7.0 mg/kg lw, followed by PCB 153 (8.0%) and PCB 180 (5.0%). PBDE 47 accounted for 2.0% of ΣPOP. While the POP concentrations are lower than those found in dolphins from many other regions of the world, some of the THg concentrations are within the concentration range found in dolphins from the southeastern coast of the United States. The ecotoxicological risk assessment showed that some of the sampled dolphins are exposed to immunotoxic and endocrine disruption effects by POPs and mercury. The low genetic diversity of this distinctive dolphin population, likely exhibiting genetic isolation and a unique evolutionary heritage, could be lost if the population continues to decline in the face of anthropogenic threats, including chemical pollution. Our finding shows that bottlenose dolphins in coastal Ecuador are exposed to environmental contaminants and can be used as sentinel species for ecosystem health to monitor pollution in the region and to support ecotoxicological risk assessment and regional pollutant management.

Histoplasmosis, a systemic mycosis caused by the fungal pathogen Histoplasma capsulatum, is a global public health concern, particularly in immunocompromised patients. The global burden of this disease is estimated in 500,000 people affected annually with around 100,000 cases progressing to disseminated histoplasmosis, the most severe clinical form of the disease with 30–50% mortality rate in treated patients. Histoplasmosis is very endemic in areas associated with river valleys. In South America, histoplasmosis is one of the most important causes of mortality in HIV patients, accounting for approximately 30% of deaths in this population, and it is frequently misdiagnosed. The animal reservoirs for these pathogens include bats and birds like pigeons, and fecal deposition in areas with high density of those animals represents hotspots of fungal contamination. In this work, we studied the prevalence of H. capsulatum in bats and pigeons from Guayas Province in Ecuador by PCR. A total number of 61 pigeons and 213 bats samples were collected, and the overall prevalence was 13.11% (95%CI: 10.54–15.68) and 21.14% (95%CI: 17.00–25.28), respectively. Moreover, Sanger sequencing analysis was carried out for hcp100 gene, followed by phylogenetic analysis including 17 sequences isolated from human patients in Guayaquil city (Guayas Province). Our results show that bats and pigeons are reservoirs for H. capsulatum linked to transmission to humans in Guayas Province. An integrative One Health surveillance and control program including animal reservoirs should be improved to reduce the burden of histoplasmosis, especially considering the high burden of HIV in Guayaquil city.
