    Description
    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the data for the San Diego, TX population pyramid, which represents the San Diego population distribution across age and gender, using estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. It lists the male and female population for each age group, along with the total population for those age groups. Higher numbers at the bottom of the table suggest population growth, whereas higher numbers at the top indicate declining birth rates. Furthermore, the dataset can be utilized to understand the youth dependency ratio, old-age dependency ratio, total dependency ratio, and potential support ratio.

    Key observations

    • Youth dependency ratio, which is the number of children aged 0-14 per 100 persons aged 15-64, for San Diego, TX, is 52.9.
    • Old-age dependency ratio, which is the number of persons aged 65 or over per 100 persons aged 15-64, for San Diego, TX, is 26.2.
    • Total dependency ratio for San Diego, TX is 79.1.
    • Potential support ratio, which is the number of youth (working age population) per elderly, for San Diego, TX is 3.8.

    Description
    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the San Diego population over the last 20 plus years. It lists the population for each year, along with the year on year change in population, as well as the change in percentage terms for each year. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population change of San Diego across the last two decades. For example, using this dataset, we can identify if the population is declining or increasing. If there is a change, when the population peaked, or if it is still growing and has not reached its peak. We can also compare the trend with the overall trend of United States population over the same period of time.

    Key observations

In 2023, the population of San Diego was 1.39 million, a 0.07% increase year-by-year from 2022. Previously, in 2022, San Diego population was 1.39 million, an increase of 0.82% compared to a population of 1.38 million in 2021. Over the last 20 plus years, between 2000 and 2023, population of San Diego increased by 160,441. In this period, the peak population was 1.42 million in the year 2019. The numbers suggest that the population has already reached its peak and is showing a trend of decline. Source: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates Program (PEP).

    Description

This data collection includes population data by census tract for San Diego County in 1970. Sample counts (5%, 15% and 20%) are derived from the Census of Population and Housing, 1970: Summary Tape File 4A: Population. Population characteristics include age, occupation, industry, income and income components, marital status, years of school completed, family type, number of children, poverty status, nativity, and parentage. Separate tallies are available for the total, white, Negro, and Spanish American populations. Whites and Negros are defined as racial categories by the Census Bureau. In California, Spanish Americans include "Persons of Spanish language or Spanish surname". The California state 4A data file was processed with PERL and SPSS by the Social Science Data Collection (SSDC) staff of the University of California, San Diego from Census Bureau data processed by DUALabs, Inc. and archived at the Odum Institute. PERL script concatenated record type codes and output five data files that match the record types described in the codebook: total population, White population, Negro population, Spanish American population, and population allocations. These five f iles were subsequently processed with SPSS to extract tracts for San Diego County and compute additional population data content. Users may browse a list of data variables (tables and cells) included in these five data files. Data from Tables 1-99 are available for all files except allocations. Data from tables 100-127 are available for allocations and substitutions. The Census Bureau produced printed reports for 1970 Summary Tape File 4A. The UCSD Geisel Library maintains printed reports and census tract maps in 1970 Census of Population and Housing Census Tracts, San Diego, Calif. (SSH Docs US Stacks C 3.223/11:970/188).

    Description

The TIGER/Line shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). The MTDB represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line shapefile is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. Face refers to the areal (polygon) topological primitives that make up MTDB. A face is bounded by one or more edges; its boundary includes only the edges that separate it from other faces, not any interior edges contained within the area of the face. The Topological Faces Shapefile contains the attributes of each topological primitive face. Each face has a unique topological face identifier (TFID) value. Each face in the shapefile includes the key geographic area codes for all geographic areas for which the Census Bureau tabulates data for both the 2020 Census and the annual estimates and surveys. The geometries of each of these geographic areas can then be built by dissolving the face geometries on the appropriate key geographic area codes in the Topological Faces Shapefile.

Measurement technique
The data presented in this dataset is derived from the latest U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. To measure the three variables, namely (a) male population, (b) female population and (b) total population, we initially analyzed and categorized the data for each of the age groups. For age groups we divided it into roughly a 5 year bucket for ages between 0 and 85. For over 85, we aggregated data into a single group for all ages. For further information regarding these estimates, please feel free to reach out to us via email at research@neilsberg.com.
