    Description

    CENSUS_TRACTS_TIGER2011_IN.SHP is a polygon shapefile that contains 2011 census block boundaries for the state of Indiana. Census blocks are not legal boundaries, but are considered stable geographic units used for the presentation of decennial census data. The following is excerpted from an Adobe Acrobat PDF document named "TGRSHP2011_TECHDOC.PDF (U.S. Census Bureau): "Census Blocks are statistical areas bounded on all sides by visible features, such as streets, roads, streams, and railroad tracks, and by non-visible boundaries such as city, town, township, and county limits, and short line-of-sight extensions of streets and roads. Generally, census blocks are small in area; for example, a block in a city. Census blocks in suburban and rural areas may be large, irregular, and bounded by a variety of features, such as roads, streams, and/or transmission line rights-of-way. In remote areas census blocks may encompass hundreds of square miles. Census blocks cover all territory in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Island areas. A block may consist of one or more faces. "Blocks never cross county or census tract boundaries (See Figures 3 and 4). They do not cross the boundaries of any entity for which the Census Bureau tabulates data, including American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian areas, congressional districts, county subdivisions, places, state legislative districts, urbanized areas, urban clusters, school districts, voting districts, or ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs) or some special administrative areas such as military installations, and national parks and monuments. "Census 2010 blocks are numbered uniquely within the 2010 boundaries of each state/county/census tract with a 4-digit census block number. The first digit of the tabulation block number identifies the block group."

    Description

    This dataset is the definitive of the annually released meshblock boundaries as at 1 January 2024 as defined by Stats NZ. This version contains 57,539 meshblocks, including 16 with empty or null geometries (non-digitised meshblocks).

    Stats NZ maintains an annual meshblock pattern for collecting and producing statistical data. This allows data to be compared over time.

    A meshblock is the smallest geographic unit for which statistical data is collected and processed by Stats NZ. A meshblock is a defined geographic area, which can vary in size from part of a city block to a large area of rural land. The optimal size for a meshblock is 30–60 dwellings (containing approximately 60–120 residents).

    Each meshblock borders on another to form a network covering all of New Zealand, including coasts and inlets and extending out to the 200-mile economic zone (EEZ) and is digitised to the 12-mile (19.3km) limit. Meshblocks are added together to build up larger geographic areas such as statistical area 1 (SA1), statistical area 2 (SA2), statistical area 3 (SA3), and urban rural (UR). They are also used to define electoral districts, territorial authorities, and regional councils.

    Meshblock boundaries generally follow road centrelines, cadastral property boundaries, or topographical features such as rivers. Expanses of water in the form of lakes and inlets are defined separately from land.

    Meshblock maintenance

    Meshblock boundaries are amended by:

    1. Splitting – subdividing a meshblock into two or more meshblocks.
    2. Nudging – shifting a boundary to a more appropriate position.

    Reasons for meshblock splits and nudges can include:

    · to maintain meshblock criteria rules.

    · to improve the size balance of meshblocks in areas where there has been population growth

    · to maintain alignment to cadastre and other geographic features.

    · Stats NZ requests for boundary changes so that statistical geography boundaries can be moved

    · external requests for boundary changes so that administrative or electoral boundaries can be moved

    · to separate land and water. Mainland, inland water, islands, inlets, and oceanic are defined separately

    Meshblock changes are made throughout the year. A major release is made at 1 January each year with ad hoc releases available to users at other times.

    While meshblock boundaries are continually under review, 'freezes' on changes to the boundaries are applied periodically. Such 'freezes' are imposed at the time of population censuses and during periods of intense electoral activity, for example, prior and during general and local body elections.

    Meshblock numbering

    Meshblocks are not named and have seven-digit codes.

    When meshblocks are split, each new meshblock is given a new code. The original meshblock codes no longer exist within that version and future versions of the meshblock classification. Meshblock codes do not change when a meshblock boundary is nudged.

    Meshblocks that existed prior to 2015 and have not changed are numbered from 0000100 to 3210003. Meshblocks created from 2015 onwards are numbered from 4000000.

    Digitised and non-digitised meshblocks

    The digital geographic boundaries are defined and maintained by Stats NZ.

    Meshblocks cover the land area of New Zealand, the water area to the 12mile limit, the Chatham Islands, Kermadec Islands, sub-Antarctic islands, offshore oil rigs, and Ross Dependency. The following 16 meshblocks are not held in digitised form.

    Geographic coverage

    The survey covered the whole of the Indian Union except (i) Leh (Ladakh) and Kargil districts of Jammu & Kashmir, (ii) interior villages of Nagaland situated beyond five kilometres of the bus route and (iii) villages in Andaman and Nicobar Islands which remain inaccessible throughout the year.

    Sample Design Outline of sample design: A stratified multi-stage design has been adopted for the 61st round survey. The first stage units (FSU) are the 2001 census villages in the rural sector and Urban Frame Survey (UFS) blocks in the urban sector. The ultimate stage units (USU) are households in both the sectors. In the case of large villages/blocks requiring hamlet-group (hg)/sub-block (sb) formation, one intermediate stage is the selection of two hgs/sbs from each FSU.

    Sampling Frame for First Stage Units: For the rural sector, the list of 2001 census villages (panchayat wards for Kerala) constitutes the sampling frame. For the urban sector, the list of latest available Urban Frame Survey (UFS) blocks has been considered as the sampling frame.

    Stratification: Within each district of a State/UT, two basic strata have been formed: i) rural stratum comprising of all rural areas of the district and (ii) urban stratum comprising of all the urban areas of the district. However, if there are one or more towns with population 10 lakhs or more as per population census 2001 in a district, each of them will also form a separate basic stratum and the remaining urban areas of the district will be considered as another basic stratum. There are 27 towns with population 10 lakhs or more at all-India level as per census 2001.

    Sub-stratification:
    Rural sector: If 'r' be the sample size allocated for a rural stratum, the number of sub-strata formed is 'r/2'. The villages within a district as per frame have been first arranged in ascending order of population. Then sub-strata 1 to 'r/2' have been demarcated in such a way that each sub-stratum comprises a group of villages of the arranged frame and has more or less equal population.

    Urban sector: If 'u' be the sample size for a urban stratum, 'u/2' number of sub-strata have been formed. The towns within a district, except those with population 10 lakhs or more, have been first arranged in ascending order of population. Next, UFS blocks of each town have been arranged by IV unit no. × block no. in ascending order. From this arranged frame of UFS blocks of all the towns, 'u/2' number of sub-strata has been formed in such a way that each sub-stratum has more or less equal number of UFS blocks.

    For towns with population 10 lakhs or more, the urban blocks have been first arranged by IV unit no. × block no. in ascending order. Then 'u/2' number of sub-strata has been formed in such a way that each sub-stratum has more or less equal number of blocks.

    Total sample size (FSUs): 12784 FSUs have been allocated at all-India level on the basis of investigator strength in different States/UTs for central sample and 14992 for state sample.

    Allocation of total sample to States and UTs: The total number of sample FSUs is allocated to the States and UTs in proportion to population as per census 2001 subject to the availability of investigators ensuring more or less uniform work-load.

    Allocation of State/UT level sample to rural and urban sectors: State/UT level sample size is allocated between two sectors in proportion to population as per census 2001 with 1.5 weightage to urban sector subject to the restriction that urban sample size for bigger states like Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu etc. should not exceed the rural sample size. A minimum of 8 FSUs has been allocated to each state/UT separately for rural and urban areas.

    Allocation to strata: Within each sector of a State/UT, the respective sample size is allocated to the different strata in proportion to the stratum population as per census 2001. Allocations at stratum level have been adjusted to a multiple of 4 with a minimum sample size of four.

    Selection of FSUs: Two FSUs have been selected from each sub-stratum of a district of rural sector with Probability Proportional to Size With Replacement (PPSWR), size being the population as per Population Census 2001. For urban sector, two FSUs have been selected from each sub-stratum by using Simple Random Sampling Without Replacement (SRSWOR). Within each sub-stratum, samples have been drawn in the form of two independent sub-samples in both the rural and urban sectors.

    Schedule 1.0 - Consumer Expenditure

    Block 0- Descriptive identification of sample household: This block is meant for recording descriptive identification particulars of a sample household. Block 1- Identification of sample households Block 2- Particulars of field operations: The identity of the Investigator, the Assistant Superintendent and the Superintendent associated with the work, date of survey/inspection/scrutiny of schedules, date of despatch, etc., have been recorded in this block against the appropriate items in the relevant columns. Block 3- Household characteristics: The characteristics to be recorded in this block are mainly intended to be used to classify the households for tabulation.

    Block 4- Demographic and other particulars of household members: All members of the sample household have been listed in this block. Demographic particulars (relation to head, sex, age, marital status and general education) and number of meals taken recorded for each member using one line for one member.

    Blocks 5 to 11- Blocks on Consumer Expenditure: Consumption of different broad groups of items recorded in different blocks (5 to 11) according to the appropriate "approach". There have been two different reference periods for data collection in case of certain groups of items and only one reference period for other groups.

    • Block 5- Consumption of food, pan, tobacco and intoxicants during the last 30 days: In this block information on consumption of each item of food, pan, tobacco and intoxicants by the household have been collected for a reference period of 30 days preceding the date of survey
    • Block 6- Consumption of fuel and light during the last 30 days: In this block, information on consumption of fuel and light collected for the household during the 30 days prior to the date of survey.
    • Block 7- Consumption of clothing, bedding, etc.: In this block, information on quantity and value of consumption of all items of clothing collected for two reference periods; last 30 days and last 365 days.
    • Block 8- Consumption of footwear: In this block, information on quantity and value of consumption of footwear have been collected for two reference periods; last 30 days and last 365 days.
    • Block 9- Expenditure on education and medical (institutional) goods and services: In this block, information on education and institutional medical expenses incurred during the last 30 days and last 365 days have been collected.
    • Block 10- Expenditure on miscellaneous goods and services including medical (non-institutional), rents and taxes during the last 30 days: In this block, relating to miscellaneous goods and services, information have been collected on the expenditure for purchase of these items during the reference period.
    • Block 11- Expenditure for purchase and construction (including repair and maintenance) of durable goods for domestic use: Information on expenditure incurred for purchase and cost of raw materials and services for construction and repairs of durable goods for domestic use have been collected in this block for both last 30 days and last 365 days.

    The 2015 TIGER Geodatabases are extracts of selected nation based and state based geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File/Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) database. The geodatabases include feature class layers of information for the fifty states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Island areas (American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, and the United States Virgin Islands). The geodatabases do not contain any sensitive data. The 2015 TIGER Geodatabases are designed for use with Esriâ s ArcGIS.

            The 2015 State Geodatabase for Utah contains multiple layers. These layers are the Block, Block Group, Census Designated Place, Census Tract,
            County Subdivision and Incorporated Place layers.
    
            Block Groups (BGs) are clusters of blocks within the same census tract. Each census tract contains at least one BG, and BGs are uniquely numbered
            within census tracts. BGs have a valid code range of 0 through 9. BGs have the same first digit of their 4-digit census block number from the same
            decennial census. For example, tabulation blocks numbered 3001, 3002, 3003,.., 3999 within census tract 1210.02 are also within BG 3 within that
            census tract. BGs coded 0 are intended to only include water area, no land area, and they are generally in territorial seas, coastal water, and
            Great Lakes water areas. Block groups generally contain between 600 and 3,000 people. A BG usually covers a contiguous area but never crosses
            county or census tract boundaries. They may, however, cross the boundaries of other geographic entities like county subdivisions, places, urban
            areas, voting districts, congressional districts, and American Indian / Alaska Native / Native Hawaiian areas. The BG boundaries in this release
            are those that were delineated as part of the Census Bureau's Participant Statistical Areas Program (PSAP) for the 2010 Census. 
    
            The primary purpose of census tracts is to provide a stable set of geographic units for the presentation of census data and comparison back to
            previous decennial censuses. Census tracts generally have a population size between 1,200 and 8,000 people, with an optimum size of 4,000 people.
            When first delineated, census tracts were designed to be homogeneous with respect to population characteristics, economic status, and living
            conditions. The spatial size of census tracts varies widely depending on the density of settlement. Physical changes in street patterns caused by
            highway construction, new development, and so forth, may require boundary revisions. In addition, census tracts occasionally are split due to
            population growth, or combined as a result of substantial population decline. Census tract boundaries generally follow visible and identifiable
            features. They may follow legal boundaries such as minor civil division (MCD) or incorporated place boundaries in some States and situations to
            allow for census tract-to-governmental unit relationships where the governmental boundaries tend to remain unchanged between censuses. State and
            county boundaries always are census tract boundaries in the standard census geographic hierarchy. In a few rare instances, a census tract may

    The 2015 cartographic boundary KMLs are simplified representations of selected geographic areas from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). These boundary files are specifically designed for small-scale thematic mapping. When possible, generalization is performed with the intent to maintain the hierarchical relationships among geographies and to maintain the alignment of geographies within a file set for a given year. Geographic areas may not align with the same areas from another year. Some geographies are available as nation-based files while others are available only as state-based files. After each decennial census, the Census Bureau delineates Public Use Microdata Areas (PUMAs) for the tabulation and dissemination of decennial census Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) data, American Community Survey (ACS) PUMS data, and ACS period estimates. Nesting within states, or equivalent entities, PUMAs cover the entirety of the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. PUMA delineations are subject to population, building block geography, geographic nesting, and contiguity criteria. Each PUMA is identified by a 5-character numeric census code that may contain leading zeros and a descriptive name.

    These data contain a residential isolation value for non-Hispanic blacks (NHB) and non-Hispanic whites (NHW) at the census tract level. Population counts from the 2010 census are used to calculate the index. For each block group, the index is the proportion of the population (NHB or NHW) in the index block group and block groups adjacent to the index block group. Islands (areal units with no first-level adjacent areal units) are removed as it is not possible to calculate isolation for units with no adjacent block groups. Islands (areal units with no first-level adjacent areal units) are removed as it is not possible to calculate isolation for units with no adjacent tracts.

    The TIGER/Line shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). The MTDB represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line shapefile is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. After each decennial census, the Census Bureau delineates Public Use Microdata Areas (PUMAs) for the tabulation and dissemination of decennial census Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) data, American Community Survey (ACS) PUMS data, and ACS period estimates. Nesting within states, or equivalent entities, PUMAs cover the entirety of the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. PUMA delineations are subject to population, building block geography, geographic nesting, and contiguity criteria. Each PUMA is identified by a 5-character numeric census code that may contain leading zeros and a descriptive name.

    The 2015 TIGER Geodatabases are extracts of selected nation based and state based geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File/Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) database. CENSUS_TRACTS_TIGER2011_IN.SHP is a polygon shapefile that contains 2011 census block boundaries for the state of Indiana. Census blocks are not legal boundaries, but are considered stable geographic units used for the presentation of decennial census data. The following is excerpted from an Adobe Acrobat PDF document named "TGRSHP2011_TECHDOC.PDF (U.S. Census Bureau): "Census Blocks are statistical areas bounded on all sides by visible features, such as streets, roads, streams, and railroad tracks, and by non-visible boundaries such as city, town, township, and county limits, and short line-of-sight extensions of streets and roads. Generally, census blocks are small in area; for example, a block in a city. Census blocks in suburban and rural areas may be large, irregular, and bounded by a variety of features, such as roads, streams, and/or transmission line rights-of-way. In remote areas census blocks may encompass hundreds of square miles. Census blocks cover all territory in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Island areas. A block may consist of one or more faces. "Blocks never cross county or census tract boundaries (See Figures 3 and 4). They do not cross the boundaries of any entity for which the Census Bureau tabulates data, including American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian areas, congressional districts, county subdivisions, places, state legislative districts, urbanized areas, urban clusters, school districts, voting districts, or ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs) or some special administrative areas such as military installations, and national parks and monuments. "Census 2010 blocks are numbered uniquely within the 2010 boundaries of each state/county/census tract with a 4-digit census block number. The first digit of the tabulation block number identifies the block group."
