    Description
    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the Kansas City population over the last 20 plus years. It lists the population for each year, along with the year on year change in population, as well as the change in percentage terms for each year. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population change of Kansas City across the last two decades. For example, using this dataset, we can identify if the population is declining or increasing. If there is a change, when the population peaked, or if it is still growing and has not reached its peak. We can also compare the trend with the overall trend of United States population over the same period of time.

    Key observations

In 2023, the population of Kansas City was 510,704, a 0.31% increase year-by-year from 2022. Previously, in 2022, Kansas City population was 509,129, an increase of 0.01% compared to a population of 509,080 in 2021. Over the last 20 plus years, between 2000 and 2023, population of Kansas City increased by 68,397. In this period, the peak population was 510,704 in the year 2023. The numbers suggest that the population has not reached its peak yet and is showing a trend of further growth. Source: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates Program (PEP).

    Measurement technique
The data presented in this dataset is derived from the latest U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. To portray the median household income within each racial category idetified by the US Census Bureau, we conducted an initial analysis and categorization of the data. Subsequently, we adjusted these figures for inflation using the Consumer Price Index retroactive series via current methods (R-CPI-U-RS). It is important to note that the median household income estimates exclusively represent the identified racial categories and do not incorporate any ethnicity classifications. Households are categorized, and median incomes are reported based on the self-identified race of the head of the household. Description
    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset presents the median household income across different racial categories in Kansas City. It portrays the median household income of the head of household across racial categories (excluding ethnicity) as identified by the Census Bureau. The dataset can be utilized to gain insights into economic disparities and trends and explore the variations in median houshold income for diverse racial categories.

    Key observations

Based on our analysis of the distribution of Kansas City population by race & ethnicity, the population is predominantly White. This particular racial category constitutes the majority, accounting for 44.03% of the total residents in Kansas City. Notably, the median household income for White households is $65,991. Interestingly, despite the White population being the most populous, it is worth noting that American Indian and Alaska Native households actually reports the highest median household income, with a median income of $87,723. This reveals that, while Whites may be the most numerous in Kansas City, American Indian and Alaska Native households experience greater economic prosperity in terms of median household income.

    Description

Abstract (en): This study was a joint project of ten major United States cities participating in the Urban Observatory Program: Atlanta, Albuquerque, Baltimore, Boston, Denver, Kansas City, Kansas, Kansas City, Missouri, Milwaukee, Nashville, and San Diego. The survey focused on citizens' perceptions of the problems of urban life. Citizens' attitudes toward local government services and their opinions about local problems in the areas of schooling, housing, public transportation, controlled drugs, law and order, and taxes were assessed in all ten cities. Information on the socioeconomic status of the respondents, and on household composition was also elicited. Demographic data include sex, age, marital status, race, ethnicity, birthplace, level of education, and family income. Each city may be analyzed separately or may be treated as an integral part of the comparative study. ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection: Standardized missing values.; Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.. Adult populations of Atlanta, Albuquerque, Baltimore, Boston, Denver, Kansas City, Kansas, Kansas City, Missouri, Milwaukee, Nashville, and San Diego. An independent sample was drawn from each of the cities included in the study. The samples were designed to represent a cross-section of all households within the politically-defined limits of each central city. They were drawn from the cities' directories and corrections were made with block supplements. Each household in a given city had an equal probability for selection. Within selected households, one adult was designated as respondent and no substitutions were permitted. The samples are not representative of the total United States population living in Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas.
