Still, the share reached its highest value in the observed period in 2023. A population may be defined as urban depending on the size (population or area) or population density of the village, town, or city. The urbanization rate then refers to the share of the total population who live in an urban setting. International comparisons may be inconsistent due to differing parameters for what constitutes an urban center.Find more key insights for the share of urban population in countries like Denmark and Sweden.

    Description

As of 2023, 37 percent of Norwegians had achieved a higher education, representing the most common educational level attained in the country. The Norwegian education system is divided into three levels: primary school, upper secondary school, and higher education. While primary school is compulsory for everyone between six and 16 years, upper secondary school is an optional three-year long education, leading either to vocational- or higher education. Highly educated population Since 2010, the number of students in higher education increased, reaching nearly 312,000 students in 2023. There were more female students, and the university with the highest number of students is the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in the city of Trondheim. Education levels in Scandinavia When considering the rest of Scandinavia, similar patterns appear. In both Sweden and Denmark, the population is gradually becoming more educated, and the number of students in higher education increased over the past decade. In 2023, approximately 24 percent of Swedes had a higher education of three years or more, while 12 percent of Danes had completed a master’s degree the same year.

    Description

In 2024, Iceland was the Nordic country with the highest degree of urbanization, with over 80 percent of the population living in cities, towns, or suburbs. It is also the only Nordic country with a higher degree of urbanization than the EU average. Norway is the country with the lowest degree of urbanization, but the share was unusually high between 2021 and 2023, which is probably down to a change in the classification of towns and suburbs, as a municipal reform altered the number and size of municipalities. The reform was revoked at the beginning of 2024.
