Usual Resident Population Census 2022 - data has been processed to include Stirling Council's multi-member ward and community council information.Households:On Census Day there were 2,509,300 households with at least one usual resident. This is up 136,500 (5.8%) from the 2011 census. The percentage increase in the number of households (5.8%) was higher than the increase in the population (2.7%).The increase in the number of households was mostly due to a 106,700 increase in single person households (up 13.0%). The 2021 census in England and Wales showed a smaller percentage increase in single person households since 2011 (up 5.9%). The 2021 census in Northern Ireland showed a larger increase (up 19.5%).There were 930,000 single person households in Scotland in 2022. Over a third of all households were single person (37.1%). Single person was the most common household size, followed by two person households (856,000).Working with census statistics:Census statistics represent the total population rather than just those who completed the questionnaire. Since the 2001 censuses, statistical modelling has been used across the United Kingdom to produce total population estimates from census responses.As with all estimates, there is a level of uncertainty. In particular, the proposed changes have been produced to align with new population data from the 2022 Census.Data Zones are the key geography for the dissemination of small area statistics in Scotland and are widely used across the public sector. Composed of groups of Census Output Areas, Data Zones are large enough that statistics can be presented accurately without fear of disclosure and yet small enough that they can be used to represent communities. They are designed to have roughly standard populations of 500 to 1,000 household residents, nest within local authorities (at the time of the Census), and have compact shapes that respect physical boundaries where possible. This dataset is published as Open Data.2022 Census Settlement:The 2022 Census Settlement boundaries have been created using the Census 2022 frozen Postcode boundaries.National Records of Scotland (NRS) create Settlement boundaries by categorising Postcodes as either high or low density. A Postcode was defined as high density if at least one of the following applied:It had more than 2.1 households per hectare.It had more than 0.1 non-residential addresses per hectare; orThe Census population per hectare exceeds five people.The threshold densities were set as they were found to give a good approximation to the built-up areas identified in previous Censuses using traditional methods. The second condition was included such that non-residential parts (e.g. industrial estates) of built-up areas could be identified and included.An additional rule was implemented from the 2016 (non-Census) version, which stated that any Postcodes which fell within the previous version Settlement boundary(based on centroid point in polygon assignment) would automatically be included in the new Settlement.The classified Postcodes were then grouped into areas of neighbouring high-density Postcodes, or ‘Settlements’. Areas of low-density Postcodes completely surrounded by the high-density areas (i.e. ‘holes’) were incorporated into the Settlement.Populations for each area were then calculated, and any settlement with fewer than 500 residents was discarded.2022 Census Settlement and Locality CentroidsEach population weighted centroid was calculated using a median centroid algorithm, the result of which is less influenced by outliers than the result of an algorithm to calculate the mean centroid. The process for creating Census 2022 Settlements centroids was automated usingESRI ArcGIS, but the general method is as follows. The median easting and northing coordinate pair for all Census 2022 frozenPostcodes within the Settlement is calculated, giving a notional centroid of the Settlement. The distance from each of the Postcode centroids to the notional (or median) centroid is calculated using Pythagoras' Theorem. The Postcode coordinate pair with the shortest distance to the median was then chosen to represent the centroid of the Settlement/Locality.

Provisional data are published on a quarterly basis around 10 weeks after the end of the quarter. These annual figures represent the final figures for the calendar year and supersede the provisional weekly, monthly and quarterly figures already published. The classification aids policy development and the understanding of issues facing urban, rural and remote communities. It is based upon two main criteria: (i) population as defined by National Records of Scotland (NRS), and (ii) accessibility based on drive time analysis to differentiate between accessible and remote areas in Scotland. The classification can be analysed in a two, three, six or eight fold form. The two-fold classification simply distinguishes between urban and rural areas through two categories, urban and rural, while the three-fold classification splits the rural category between accessible and remote. Most commonly used is the 6-fold classification which distinguishes between urban, rural, and remote areas through six categories. The 8-fold classification further distinguishes between remote and very remote regions. The Classification is normally updated on a biennial basis, with the current dataset reflective of the year 2022.

National Records of Scotland Guidance;What is ‘period’ life expectancyAll of the estimates presented in this report are ‘period’ life expectancy. They are calculated assuming that mortality rates for each age group in the time period (here 2021-2023) are constant throughout a person’s life. Period life expectancy is often described as how long a baby born now could expect to live if they experienced today’s mortality rates throughout their lifetime. It is very unlikely that this would be the case as it means that future changes in things such as medicine and legislation are not taken into consideration.Period life expectancy is not an accurate prediction of how long a person born today will actually live, but it is a useful measure of population health at a point in time and is most useful for comparing trends over time, between areas of a country and with other countries.How national life expectancy is calculatedThe latest life expectancy figures are calculated from the mid-year population estimates for Scotland and the number of deaths registered in Scotland during 2021, 2022, and 2023. Life expectancy for Scotland is calculated for each year of age and represents the average number of years that someone of that age could expect to live if death rates for each age group remained constant over their lifetime. Life expectancy in Scotland is calculated as a three-year average, produced by combining deaths and population data for the three-year period. Three years of data are needed to provide large enough numbers to make these figures accurate and lessen the effect of very ‘good’ or ‘bad’ years. Throughout this publication, the latest life expectancy figures refer to 2021-2023 period. How sub-national life expectancy is calculatedWe calculate life expectancy for areas within Scotland using a very similar method to the national figures but with a few key differences. Firstly, we use age groups rather than single year of age. This is to increase the population size of each age group to reduce fluctuations and ensure accurate calculation of mortality rates. Secondly, we use a maximum age group of 90+ whereas the national figures are calculated up to age 100. These are known as ‘abridged life tables.’ Because these methods produce slightly different figures, we also calculate a Scotland figure using the abridged method to allow for accurate comparisons between local areas for example. This Scotland figure is only for comparison and does not replace the headline national figure. Uses of life expectancyLife expectancy at birth is a very useful indicator of mortality conditions across a population at a particular point in time. It also provides an objective means of comparing trends in mortality over time, between areas of a country and with other countries.
