    Description

    Population pyramids provide a way to visualize the age and sex composition of a geographic region, such as a nation, state, or county. A standard population pyramid has two bar charts or histograms, one for the male population and one for the female population. The two charts mirror each other and are divided into 5-year age cohorts. The shape of a population pyramid provide insights into a regions fertility, mortality, and migration patterns. When a region has high fertility and mortality, but low migration the visualization will look like a pyramid. In many regions fertility and mortality have decreased between 1970 and 2017, as people live longer and women have fewer children. With lower fertility and mortality population pyramids are shaped more like a pillar. When interpreting population pyramids for smaller areas (like counties) the most important force that shapes the pyramid is in- and out-migration. (Wang and vom Hofe, 2006, p. 65) For smaller regions population pyramids can have unique shapes.

    This data archive provides the resources needed to generate population pyramids for the United States, individual states, and any county within the United States. Population pyramids usually require significant data cleaning and graph making skills to generate one pyramid. With this data archive the data cleaning has been completed and the R script provides reusable code to quickly generate graphs. The final output is an image file with six graphs on one page. The final layout makes it easy to compare changes in population age and sex composition for any state and any county in the US for 1970, 1980, 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2017.

    Context

    The dataset tabulates the data for the State Line, MS population pyramid, which represents the State Line population distribution across age and gender, using estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey 5-Year estimates.     The United States' economy over the last decade

    The United States of America is the world’s largest national economy and the second most prominent trader globally, trailing just behind China. The country is also one of the most populated countries in the world, trailing only China and India. The United States' economy prospers primarily due to having a plentiful amount of natural resources and advanced infrastructure to cope with the production of goods and services, as well as the population and workforce to enable high productivity. Efficient productivity led to a slight growth in GDP almost every year over the past decade, despite undergoing several economic hardships towards the late 2000's.

    In addition, the United States holds arguably one of the most important financial markets, with the majority of countries around the world having commercial connections with American companies. Dependency on a single market like the United States has however caused several global dilemmas, most evidently seen during the 2008 financial crisis. What initially started off as a bursting of the U.S. housing bubble lead to a worldwide recession and the necessity to reform national economics. The global financial crisis affected the United States most drastically, especially within the unemployment market as well as national debt, which continued to rise due to the United States having to borrow money in order to stimulate its economy.

    Additional information on the aging population in the United States

    High birth rates during the so-called baby boom years that followed World War II followed by lower fertility and morality rates have left the United States with a serious challenge in the 21st Century. However, the issue of an aging population is certainly not an issue unique to the United States. The age distribution of the global population shows that other parts of the world face a similar issue.

    Within the United States, the uneven distribution of populations aged 65 years and over among states offers both major challenges and potential solutions. On the one hand, federal action over the issue may be contentious as other states are set to harbor the costs of elderly care in states such as California and Florida. That said, domestic migration from comparably younger states may help to fill gaps in the workforce left by retirees in others.

    Nonetheless, aging population issues are set to gain further prominence in the political and economic decisions made by policymakers regardless of the eventual distribution of America’s elderly. Analysis of the financial concerns of Americans by age shows many young people still decades from retirement hold strong concern over their eventual financial position.

    This graph shows the population of the U.S. by race and ethnic group from 2000 to 2023. In 2023, there were around 21.39 million people of Asian origin living in the United States. A ranking of the most spoken languages across the world can be accessed here. U.S. populationCurrently, the white population makes up the vast majority of the United States’ population, accounting for some 252.07 million people in 2023. This ethnicity group contributes to the highest share of the population in every region, but is especially noticeable in the Midwestern region. The Black or African American resident population totaled 45.76 million people in the same year. The overall population in the United States is expected to increase annually from 2022, with the 320.92 million people in 2015 expected to rise to 341.69 million people by 2027. Thus, population densities have also increased, totaling 36.3 inhabitants per square kilometer as of 2021. Monaco is the most densely populated country in the world and has a population density of 24,621.5 inhabitants per square kilometer as of 2021. As population numbers in the U.S. continues to grow, the Hispanic population has also seen a similar trend from 35.7 million inhabitants in the country in 2000 to some 62.65 million inhabitants in 2021. This growing population group is a significant source of population growth in the country due to both high immigration and birth rates.     In 2023, the median age of the population of the United States was 39.2 years. While this may seem quite young, the median age in 1960 was even younger, at 29.5 years. The aging population in the United States means that society is going to have to find a way to adapt to the larger numbers of older people. For example, the narrowing of a population pyramid in the young-adult ages (reducing the base and widening the center) is probably due to a decline in fertility, but it may also be affected by a process of ethnic reworking of recent generations. This indicator does not include imputation of ethnicity in the population not captured by the corresponding questions (for example, children under 5 years of age in the 2000 Mexican census, or children under 3 years of age in the 2010 census). Regarding the processing of census data, the following considerations must be made: Mexico (2000 and 2010) and Panama (2000 and 2010): The population with unknown age is excluded from the totals and/or percentages calculated from them. Bolivia (Plurinational State of) (2001), Brazil (2000 and 2010), Colombia (2005 and 2018), Costa Rica (2000 and 2011), Mexico (2000 and 2010), Nicaragua (2005), Peru (2017), Uruguay (2011) and Venezuela (Bolivarian Republic of) (2001 and 2011): The population with unknown ethnic-racial condition does not appear in the population totals neither in the percentages calculated from them. Bolivia (Plurinational State of) (2001) and Mexico (2000 and 2010): The data correspond to the population residing in occupied private households. Brazil (2010), Costa Rica (2000 and 2011), Paraguay (2002) and Venezuela (Bolivarian Republic of ) (2001 and 2011): These countries have indigenous censuses (of territories or communities), carried out in parallel with the general census. The databases used constitute an integration of the information captured in both when it is possible. Brazil (2000 and 2010) and Mexico (2000 and 2010): The databases used correspond to samples. In Brazil, the expanded figures are rounded. Argentina (2010), Panama (2010), Uruguay (2011) and Mexico (2020): Ethnic-racial identification is carried out in a combined manner (indigenous and Afro-descendant). In these countries, the relative measures are calculated by assigning these people to the ethnic-racial category with the fewest cases.     In 1800, the region of Germany was not a single, unified nation, but a collection of decentralized, independent states, bound together as part of the Holy Roman Empire. This empire was dissolved, however, in 1806, during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic eras in Europe, and the German Confederation was established in 1815. Napoleonic reforms led to the abolition of serfdom, extension of voting rights to property-owners, and an overall increase in living standards. The population grew throughout the remainder of the century, as improvements in sanitation and medicine (namely, mandatory vaccination policies) saw child mortality rates fall in later decades. As Germany industrialized and the economy grew, so too did the argument for nationhood; calls for pan-Germanism (the unification of all German-speaking lands) grew more popular among the lower classes in the mid-1800s, especially following the revolutions of 1948-49. In contrast, industrialization and poor harvests also saw high unemployment in rural regions, which led to waves of mass migration, particularly to the U.S.. In 1886, the Austro-Prussian War united northern Germany under a new Confederation, while the remaining German states (excluding Austria and Switzerland) joined following the Franco-Prussian War in 1871; this established the German Empire, under the Prussian leadership of Emperor Wilhelm I and Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. 1871 to 1945 - Unification to the Second World War The first decades of unification saw Germany rise to become one of Europe's strongest and most advanced nations, and challenge other world powers on an international scale, establishing colonies in Africa and the Pacific. These endeavors were cut short, however, when the Austro-Hungarian heir apparent was assassinated in Sarajevo; Germany promised a "blank check" of support for Austria's retaliation, who subsequently declared war on Serbia and set the First World War in motion. Viewed as the strongest of the Central Powers, Germany mobilized over 11 million men throughout the war, and its army fought in all theaters. As the war progressed, both the military and civilian populations grew increasingly weakened due to malnutrition, as Germany's resources became stretched. By the war's end in 1918, Germany suffered over 2 million civilian and military deaths due to conflict, and several hundred thousand more during the accompanying influenza pandemic. Mass displacement and the restructuring of Europe's borders through the Treaty of Versailles saw the population drop by several million more.

    Reparations and economic mismanagement also financially crippled Germany and led to bitter indignation among many Germans in the interwar period; something that was exploited by Adolf Hitler on his rise to power. Reckless printing of money caused hyperinflation in 1923, when the currency became so worthless that basic items were priced at trillions of Marks; the introduction of the Rentenmark then stabilized the economy before the Great Depression of 1929 sent it back into dramatic decline. When Hitler became Chancellor of Germany in 1933, the Nazi government disregarded the Treaty of Versailles' restrictions and Germany rose once more to become an emerging superpower. Hitler's desire for territorial expansion into eastern Europe and the creation of an ethnically-homogenous German empire then led to the invasion of Poland in 1939, which is considered the beginning of the Second World War in Europe. Again, almost every aspect of German life contributed to the war effort, and more than 13 million men were mobilized. After six years of war, and over seven million German deaths, the Axis powers were defeated and Germany was divided into four zones administered by France, the Soviet Union, the UK, and the U.S.. Mass displacement, shifting borders, and the relocation of peoples based on ethnicity also greatly affected the population during this time. 1945 to 2020 - Partition and Reunification In the late 1940s, cold war tensions led to two distinct states emerging in Germany; the Soviet-controlled east became the communist German Democratic Republic (DDR), and the three western zones merged to form the democratic Federal Republic of Germany. Additionally, Berlin was split in a similar fashion, although its location deep inside DDR territory created series of problems and opportunities for the those on either side. Life quickly changed depending on which side of the border one lived. Within a decade, rapid economic recovery saw West Germany become western Europe's strongest economy and a key international player. Description

Population pyramids provide a way to visualize the age and sex composition of a geographic region, such as a nation, state, or county. A standard population pyramid has two bar charts or histograms, one for the male population and one for the female population. The two charts mirror each other and are divided into 5-year age cohorts. The shape of a population pyramid provide insights into a regions fertility, mortality, and migration patterns. When a region has high fertility and mortality, but low migration the visualization will look like a pyramid. In many regions fertility and mortality have decreased between 1970 and 2017, as people live longer and women have fewer children. With lower fertility and mortality population pyramids are shaped more like a pillar. When interpreting population pyramids for smaller areas (like counties) the most important force that shapes the pyramid is in- and out-migration. (Wang and vom Hofe, 2006, p. 65) For smaller regions population pyramids can have unique shapes.

This data archive provides the resources needed to generate population pyramids for the United States, individual states, and any county within the United States. Population pyramids usually require significant data cleaning and graph making skills to generate one pyramid. With this data archive the data cleaning has been completed and the R script provides reusable code to quickly generate graphs. The final output is an image file with six graphs on one page. The final layout makes it easy to compare changes in population age and sex composition for any state and any county in the US for 1970, 1980, 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2017.
