The dataset is obtained by surveying the on-line shop of four major supermarkets in the UK in August 2014. The sample of supermarkets is composed by the top-three and one major upscale chain, which jointly controlled 68% of UK market shares in 2014. All of them had a dedicated web-page for on-line shopping with an explicit indication for gluten-free products. Data were collected on a survey window of 30 days in August 2014. The search focused on all the products in the "Bread and Cereals" COICOP category, which includes the following five groups: bread, flour, cakes buns and pastries, biscuits and crispbread, other cereals and cereal products and their subgroups. Prices (in pence per 100 grams) of all gluten-containing cereal products in each group were collected. Similarly, prices (in pence per 100 grams) of all gluten-free cereal products in each group were collected. Only those products certified as suitable for coeliac consumers were classified as gluten-free.

TwitterThis publication gives previously published copies of the monthly National Statistics publication on UK milk prices and composition of milk that showed figures for 2014. Each publication gives the figures available at that time. The figures are subject to revision each month as new information becomes available.
The latest publication and accompanying data sets can be found here.
Most milk produced in the UK is bought by dairies (registered ‘milk purchasers’) for processing. Defra runs a monthly survey in England and Wales to collect information on the volume, value and protein content of milk purchased from farms. Similar surveys are run in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Additional information is collected by the Rural Payments Agency (RPA) on the protein and butterfat content of the milk. The UK average farm-gate milk price, protein content and butterfat content is then calculated.

The FAOSTAT monthly Food CPI and General CPI database was based on the ILO CPI data until December 2014. In 2014, IMF-ILO-FAO agreed to transfer global CPI data compilation from ILO to IMF. Upon agreement, CPIs for all items and its sub components originates from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the UN Statistics Division(UNSD) for countries not covered by the IMF. However, due to a limited time coverage from IMF and UNSD for a number of countries, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Central Bank of Western African States (BCEAO), Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB), UNdata, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and national statistical office website data are used for missing historical data from IMF and UNSD food CPI.
The FAO CPI dataset for all items(or general CPI) and the Food CPI, consists of a complete and consistent set of time series from January 2000 onwards. Data gaps on monthly Food CPI and General CPI are filled using statistical estimation procedures to have full data coverage for all countries for Food CPI and for General CPI. These indices measure the price change between the current and reference periods of the average basket of goods and services purchased by households. The General CPI is typically used to measure and monitor inflation, set monetary policy targets, index social benefits such as pensions and unemployment benefits, and to escalate thresholds and credits in the income tax systems and wages in public and private wage contracts. The FAOSTAT monthly Food CPI inflation rates are annual year-over-year inflation or percentage change over corresponding month of the previous year.

TwitterRetail prices of more than 50 food items are collected each week at representative stores of the major food chains in Edmonton. The prices are weighted to account for the estimated market share held by each chain as well as the relative importance of each item in the total food-at-home budget. The purpose of the survey is to continue to build upon the historical series of benchmark retail food prices which we have been collecting for Edmonton since the early 1970s. The data series provides accurate, timely and reliable data on retail food prices for use in business analysis and planning. It is also used by the health care services sector in programs involving food security issues, nutrition and education, and policy, planning and advocacy work.
