Data users: 1. The information in this notice is used by the UK government and the EU as evidence for assessing market conditions and evaluating agricultural policy. The farmgate price of UK eggs are required quarterly under Regulation EC 1165/2008 (Animal Production). 2. Representatives of the egg and poultry industry are also major users of the data. The data on egg production volumes and egg type are the key sector indicators for the British Egg Industry Council (BEIC) as they reflect the size of the national laying flock. The Home Grown Cereals Authority (HGCA), part of the Agricultural and Horticultural Development Board, rely on egg production data as a good indicator of the commercial layer flock and associated feed demand and hence grain usage by the sector. Our statistics are also often heavily referenced in industry publications such as “Poultry World”. Methodology: 3. Defra runs a quarterly survey of registered UK egg packing stations. It is a voluntary sample survey of 27 respondents that collects information on throughput by production type and prices of graded eggs and sales of ungraded eggs. The response rate is typically 100 per cent and the survey accounts for 75 per cent of eggs packed in the UK. The survey figures are raised up to give UK estimates using information on the number of commercial laying hens, average egg yields, average mortality rates, the proportion of UK eggs that go through packing stations. Throughput by egg type for packing stations not surveyed is calculated using data provided by packing stations responding to the survey. The raised figures are published in this statistics notice and the associated datasets. The figures in this notice therefore represent all Class A eggs passed over a grader in the UK, including seconds. The prices obtained on the survey are weighted according to the volume of eggs packed by each packing station to obtained average prices for the UK. From 2012, prices include any bonus payments paid to producers. The Egg Processor survey is a quarterly survey of all registered egg processors. It is a voluntary survey of 13 respondents run by Defra that collects information on the number of eggs bought by egg processors and the quantity of egg products produced. The response rate is typically 100 per cent . These figures come from HM Revenue and Customs, but are validated and adjusted if necessary prior to publication. The Standard Industrial Classification codes used to produce each table are given in the footnotes below the tables. 4. In tables that show numbers of eggs the units used are 'thousand cases'. There are 360 eggs in one case. 5. The data are subject to a variety of validation checks which identify inconsistencies in the data. All data are cleaned prior to publication. 6. The percentage changes shown are calculated using unrounded figures. Thus any percentage changes calculated using the published (rounded) figures may not equate exactly with the changes shown. Revisions policy: 7. Figures in this dataset are provisional and subject to revision. We will provide information about any revisions we make to previously published information in this dataset, and the associated statistics notice. In the current period, the US egg industry has experienced revenue growth primarily driven by historically high egg prices, a direct consequence of recurrent HPAI outbreaks. These outbreaks have been the most disruptive force over the past five years, leading to significant flock reductions and persistent supply shortages. As millions of hens have been culled due to disease, the scarcity has caused retail egg prices to soar, with some months seeing prices more than double year-over-year. This price surge has helped offset revenue losses from flock reductions but increased input costs for some producers; the overall uneven impact has prompted an industry-wide shift towards improved biosecurity measures and contingency planning to mitigate future risks and maintain current price levels. Overall, revenue has climbed at a CAGR of 15.5% to an estimated $19.8 billion after a decrease of 4.4% in 2025. Trade dynamics and input costs are significantly challenging profit, despite rising egg prices. The US has increased imports to make up for domestic shortages, sourcing eggs from countries less affected by HPAI, like Mexico. However, new tariffs on imports and critical feed ingredients stand to raise costs for US egg producers, diminishing competitiveness abroad and driving higher domestic prices. Retaliatory tariffs, especially from Canada, and increased costs for foreign-manufactured equipment have further strained profit. While elevated egg prices have provided some revenue relief, high input costs, especially for feed, have suppressed overall profit levels across the industry. Looking ahead, the outlook for the US egg industry will be driven by steady production growth and price normalization. With the expected recovery from disease shocks and ongoing investments in capacity expansion, output is projected to rise through 2030, matching climbing per capita egg consumption. As supply stabilizes, egg prices will drop sharply from recent peaks to near pre-HPAI levels by 2026. Consequently, revenue is forecast to decline at a CAGR of 6.0% to reach $14.5 billion in 2030. Nevertheless, specialty eggs like organic and cage-free are expected to maintain stronger margins due to regulatory mandates and evolving consumer preferences. Producers are increasingly investing in operational efficiency initiatives, supported by emerging livestock-care technologies and methods and lower borrowing costs, as they prepare for a more competitive pricing environment while preserving sustainable growth.
The production volume of eggs worldwide reached 91 million metric tons in 2023, up from about 89.1 million metric tons in 2022. Since 1990, the global egg production volume has increased by over 100 percent. When looking at the consumer price index for dairy products and eggs, a significant increase is also visible. In 2022, the index recorded 138.5. Once again using 2015 as a 100 percent baseline, this means that compared to then, dairy and egg prices have grown by 38.5 percent.

Cephalopods are gaining momentum as an alternate group for aquaculture species diversification, not only because they are a good food source (highly appreciated in some worldwide markets) but they also have the potential to quickly reach a market size. However, there are some bottlenecks impeding the transition of culture technology from the laboratory to industry. One is related to control over reproduction in captivity. The objective of the present experiment was to verify the effects of tanks with different bottom areas/volumes on the reproduction performance of S. officinalis breeding stocks, when sex ratios were controlled a priori; and the food cost associated with such performance when individuals are fed a natural frozen diet. One hundred and ninety two juvenile cuttlefish were used to compare three different round-shaped tanks: one type with 3000L volume and two types with 9000L volume (with differences in bottom areas and water column). Individuals had their sex and maturity stage determined to establish a sexual ratio of 2♀:1♂ per tank and assure that cuttlefish were still immature. Biological data was collected during both growth and reproduction stages and until the death of all females in each tank. The experiment lasted nearly 300 days. Temperature differences between tank types were registered during both stages. The optimizing of rearing conditions has allowed for higher growth and a higher amount of cuttlefish available for breeding purposes. A total of 123,751 eggs (in 85 batches) was obtained during this experiment, which is a number that may meet a small scale cuttlefish commercial hatchery facility requirements. The present conditions contributed to a better and predictable reproduction performance in specific 9000L tanks, with values reaching pre-industrial numbers (≈ 24,000 eggs/tank). Moreover, both the amount of eggs per batch and the overall quality of eggs has increased. Three of these 9000L tanks have an overall consumption of ≈ 38.64 Kg tank–1, which translates in an investment in feed of ≈ 193 € tank–1, 8.40 € per cuttlefish and an overall daily tank expense of 1.76 € d–1.

IntroductionMalnutrition is a significant challenge to the health of women and children in Burkina Faso. Given the critical role of animal source food on the health of infants and young children (IYC), interventions continue to explore the potential for eggs to prevent malnutrition.MethodsUsing data from the Un Oeuf intervention, which significantly increased IYC egg consumption, combined with quantitative and qualitative data from endline and 3-month follow-up, we explore the barriers and facilitating factors to IYC egg consumption and the sustainability and scalability of the intervention.ResultsChild egg consumption was high at follow-up in the Control, Partial, and Full Intervention arms (83.3, 88.2%, and 100, respectively). The Full Intervention arm had the highest mean number of eggs consumed (2.9, 2.6, and 5.7), which reflected a slight reduction from endline (6.2). All participants owned chickens at follow-up (100%), however, flock size varied. The Full Intervention arm had more chickens (mean 8.8) than the Control (5.1) or Partial Intervention (6.2) arms, which was a 50% reduction in below endline (18.5 chickens). Qualitative results indicate that chicken ownership, education about the nutritional value of eggs, and spousal support facilitated IYC egg consumption. Barriers included egg production, cultural taboos, and animal health. Motivational factors reported included the observed improvement in child health, increased availability of mothers' time, and mothers' financial independence. Knowledge sharing within the Full and Partial Intervention groups was widely reported, and the sustainability of IYC egg consumption was reinforced by accountability among mothers and to community leaders, flipbooks distributed during the project, and high motivation.DiscussionMain findings indicate that mothers who received the full Un Oeuf intervention were able to overcome barriers to feeding their child an egg daily, were able to improve their livelihood, were motivated to continue feeding their child eggs, and saw the addition of eggs into the child's diet as sustainable. Future nutrition sensitive agriculture interventions should consider tailoring this approach for other LMIC contexts. Future research is needed to explore a possible threshold in the number of household chickens necessary to continuously feed a child an egg a day.

Among avian species, the differential cost entailed by either sex in competition for mates have been regarded as the main evolutionary influence on sex differences in mortality rates. However, empirical evidence suggests that sex-biased adult mortality is mainly related to differential energy investment in gamete production, a greater annual mass devoted to egg production leading to higher female mortality. We explicitly tested the generality of this pattern in a comparative framework. Annual egg production can be relatively large in some species (up to 200% of female body mass) and annual mortality is generally biased towards females. We showed that greater annual egg productivity resulted in higher mortality rates of females relative to males. Mating system was secondarily important, species where males were more involved in mating competition having more equal mortality rates between the sexes. However, both traits explained only a limited fraction of the interspecific variation in female-biased mortality. Other traits, such as sexual size dimorphism and parental care, had much weaker influences on female-biased mortality. Our results suggest that both annual mass devoted to gamete production by females and mating system contribute to the evolution of the fundamental life-history trade-off between reproduction and survival in avian taxa.

The Agricultural Price Index (API) is a monthly publication that measures the price changes in agricultural outputs and inputs for the UK. The output series reflects the price farmers receive for their products (referred to as the farm-gate price). Information is collected for all major crops (for example wheat and potatoes) and on livestock and livestock products (for example sheep, milk and eggs). The input series reflects the price farmers pay for goods and services. This is split into two groups: goods and services currently consumed; and goods and services contributing to investment. Goods and services currently consumed refer to items that are used up in the production process, for example fertiliser, or seed. Goods and services contributing to investment relate to items that are required but not consumed in the production process, such as tractors or buildings.
A price index is a way of measuring relative price changes compared to a reference point or base year which is given a value of 100. The year used as the base year needs to be updated over time to reflect changing market trends. The latest data are presented with a base year of 2020 = 100. To maintain continuity with the current API time series, the UK continues to use standardised methodology adopted across the EU. For those commodities where farm-gate prices are currently unavailable we use the best proxy data that are available (for example wholesale prices). Similarly, calculations are based on UK prices where possible but sometimes we cannot obtain these. In such cases prices for Great Britain, England and Wales or England are used instead.
