In 2024, a liter of commercial hydrous ethanol fuel in Brazil was sold at an average price of **** Brazilian reals. This represented an increase of roughly three percent in comparison to the previous year, when Brazil's average sale price of ethanol fuel reached **** Brazilian reals. Hydrous ethanol accounts for most of the ethanol production in Brazil.

Price for gasoline of Brazil plummeted by 19.69% from 1.27 US dollars/liter in 2014 to 1.02 US dollars/liter in 2016. Since the 25.40% surge in 2010, price for gasoline sank by 35.44% in 2016. Fuel prices refer to the pump prices of the most widely sold grade of gasoline. Prices have been converted from the local currency to U.S. dollars.

Data is now available from 2004 to may 2021. NULL values are now replaces with -99999 ANP official website has monthly data until Feb 2022, but since this dataset is weekly organized it will be update to 2022 values as soon as this information is available.

The Data

The National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Bio fuels (ANP in Portuguese) releases weekly reports of gas, diesel and other fuels prices used in transportation across the country. These datasets bring the mean value per liter, number of gas stations analyzed and other information grouped by regions and states across the country.

What can be done with this?

• How different regions of Brazil saw their gas prices change?
• Within a region, which states increased more their prices?
• Which states are the cheapest (or most expensive) for different types of fuels?

In Brazil, biodiesel sales for November/December 2021 reached an average price of 5.9 thousand Brazilian reals per cubic meter, a year-over-year growth of more than six percent. That was also the highest figure recorded in the indicated period. In 2021, the minimum biodiesel blend in commercialized diesel fuel in Brazil oscillated between 10 and 13 percent. Biodiesel sales in the country are conducted through bi-monthly auctions.

The north and north-east regions of Brazil had the highest average sale price of ethanol fuel in 2023, with figures amounting to 4.54 and 4.32 Brazilian reals per liter, respectively. Meanwhile, the central-west region had the lowest price, standing below the national average, at 3.63 Brazilian reals per liter. That year, Brazil's ethanol fuel production surpassed 35 million cubic meters.

This paper analyzes the relationship between gasoline and ethanol markets. Previous researches emphasize on substitution effect between gasoline and ethanol. However, in Brazil gasoline and ethanol are substitutes and complementary goods. We investigate the substitution and complementarity effects between fuels by using Structural Vector Autoregressions Vector (SVAR). As a result, in the short run gasoline price shock effect in ethanol demand is greater than ethanol price shock. In the long run, however, consumers make the consumption of ethanol grow. Furthermore, the introduction of flex fuel technology in Brazil did not produce any impact on ethanol price and demand. The crisis has affected positively the biofuel price nevertheless. As an implication, due to gasoline price shock the sucroalcohol sector must guarantee the ethanol domestic supply in the long run.

Diesel fuel prices of Brazil dropped by 6.86% from 1.02 US dollars per liter in 2014 to 0.95 US dollars per liter in 2016. Since the 10.68% jump in 2010, diesel fuel prices plummeted by 16.67% in 2016. Fuel prices refer to the pump prices of the most widely sold grade of diesel fuel.
