It was created to provide basic information regarding property location and boundaries, and is used as a graphical representation of legally recorded deed and plat documents for properties. Parcel ownership and recordation information is not included in this layer but can be purchased seperately from the Office of Real Estate Assessments. Users should be aware that this data does not represent legal property boundary descriptions, nor is it suitable for boundary determination of individual parcels. Any depiction of physical improvements, property lines or boundaries is for general information only and shall not be used for the design modification or construction of improvements to real property or for flood plain determination.

The layer was derived from a variety of source maps including: mylar county parcel maps, plats of surveys, deed descriptions, subdivision maps, and highway right-of-way plats. These source materials were of several different scales and were from dates ranging from the early 1900's to the present.

Prince William County Street Centerlines - Street centerlines are segmented at intersections, hydrography, zip code boundary, jurisdictional boudaryies including town boundaries and election boundaries. The layer is attributed with street name, address ranges, and other related information, full information is defined in other parts of the metadata, and in the PWC Data Dictionary. The layer can be used for creating maps, network routing and address geocoding. This data layer is the production data and is then loaded into shared data schemas for the 911 CAD system, Regional and State projects.

The initial impervious features were compiled from 1' resolution imagery collected in leaf-off conditions in March 2011 by Sanborn. Since then additional features have been added from As-Built Plans. In the spring of 2017, the Commonwealth of Virginia, through the Virginia Geographic Information Network Division (herein referred to as VGIN) of the Virginia Information Technologies Agency (VITA) contracted with Fugro Geospatial, Inc. to provide aerial data acquisition, ground control, aerial triangulation and development of statewide ortho quality DEM and digital orthophotography data. The Virginia Base Mapping Program (VBMP) update project is divided into three collection phases: In 2017, Fugro flew the eastern third of Virginia at one foot resolution, with options for localities and other interested parties to upgrade resolution or purchase other optional products through the state contract. The middle third of Virginia will be flown in 2018 and the western third in 2019. Ortho products are 1-foot resolution statewide with upgrades to 6-inch resolution tiles and 3-inch resolution tiles in various regions within the project area. The Virginia Base Mapping project encompasses the entire land area of the Commonwealth of Virginia over 4 years. The State boundary is buffered by 1000'. Coastal areas of the State bordering the Atlantic Ocean or the Chesapeake Bay are buffered by 1000' or the extent of man-made features extending from shore. This metadata record describes the generation of new Digital Terrain Model (DTM) and contours generated at 2-foot intervals. All products are being delivered in the North American Datum of 1983 (1986), State Plane Virginia North. The vertical datum was the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88) using GEOID12B.

The dataset contains polygons that designate the legal geographic boundaries between county, city and towns within the boundaries of Prince William County. Boundaries are changed thru legislation between the Prince William County Board of County Supervisors and the other town and city political entites located within PWC. This data layer is not to be used a the legal jurisdictional boundary, for reference purpose only.
