TwitterHigh resolution land cover dataset for Virginia Beach, VA. Seven land cover classes were mapped: (1) tree canopy, (2) grass/shrub, (3) bare earth, (4) water, (5) buildings, (6) roads, and (7) other paved surfaces. The minimum mapping unit for the delineation of features was set at 3x3 square feet.
The primary sources used to derive this land cover layer were (1) NAIP 2008 imagery derived from the compressed county mosaic, (2) Normalized digital surface model (nDSM) for Virginia Beach, VA, generated from 2004 light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data representing a 2ft surface. Ancillary data sources used were GIS vector planimetrics layers containing buildings, roads, utility lines, and surface water, provided by the City of Virginia Beach to aid in classification. This land cover dataset is considered current as of November, 2009.
Object-based image analysis techniques (OBIA) were employed to extract land cover information using the best available remotely sensed and vector GIS datasets. OBIA systems work by grouping pixels into meaningful objects based on their spectral and spatial properties, while taking into account boundaries imposed by existing vector datasets. Within the OBIA environment a rule-based expert system was designed to effectively mimic the process of manual image analysis by incorporating the elements of image interpretation (color/tone, texture, pattern, location, size, and shape) into the classification process. A series of morphological procedures were employed to insure that the end product is both accurate and cartographically pleasing.
No accuracy assessment was conducted, but the dataset was subject to a thorough manual quality control. 18194 corrections were made to the classification.

Green space is defined as Trees & Forest, Grass & Herbaceous, Agriculture, Woody Wetlands, and Emergent Wetlands. Agriculture is defined as Agriculture alone.Wetlands are defined as Woody Wetlands and Emergent Wetlands. This dataset also includes the area per capita for each block group for some land cover types. This dataset was produced by the US EPA to support research and online mapping activities related to EnviroAtlas. EnviroAtlas (https://www.epa.gov/enviroatlas) allows the user to interact with a web-based, easy-to-use, mapping application to view and analyze multiple ecosystem services for the contiguous United States. TwitterThe Digital Geologic-GIS Map of the Colonial Beach South Quadrangle, Virginia is composed of GIS data layers and GIS tables, and is available in the following GRI-supported GIS data formats: 1.) a 10.1 file geodatabase (coso_geology.gdb), and a 2.) Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) geopackage. The file geodatabase format is supported with a 1.) ArcGIS Pro map file (.mapx) file (coso_geology.mapx) and individual Pro layer (.lyrx) files (for each GIS data layer), as well as with a 2.) 10.1 ArcMap (.mxd) map document (coso_geology.mxd) and individual 10.1 layer (.lyr) files (for each GIS data layer). Upon request, the GIS data is also available in ESRI 10.1 shapefile format. Contact Stephanie O'Meara (see contact information below) to acquire the GIS data in these GIS data formats. In addition to the GIS data and supporting GIS files, three additional files comprise a GRI digital geologic-GIS dataset or map: 1.) A GIS readme file (gewa_geology_gis_readme.pdf), 2.) the GRI ancillary map information document (.pdf) file (gewa_geology.pdf) which contains geologic unit descriptions, as well as other ancillary map information and graphics from the source map(s) used by the GRI in the production of the GRI digital geologic-GIS data for the park, and 3.) a user-friendly FAQ PDF version of the metadata (coso_geology_metadata_faq.pdf). TwitterThe Virginia Beach, VA EnviroAtlas Meter-scale Urban Land Cover (MULC) dataset comprises 3,724 km2 of southeast Virginia and includes Hampton, Newport News, Suffolk, Virginia Beach and Williamsburg. The area was selected based on the US Census Bureau's 2010 Urban Area for Virginia Beach, VA with a 1 km buffer added. These MULC data and maps are an adaptation of data developed in succession by three organizations. First, WorldView Solutions Inc., a contractor of the Virginia Geographic Information Network (VGIN), created an original dataset for the state of Virginia that used 6 inch to 1 foot-resolution, four-band (red, green, blue, and near-infrared), leaf-off imagery collected in 2013 for the Virginia Base Mapping Program, as well as 2015 VGIN LiDAR, and ancillary data inputs. These data did not fully capture tree canopy. Second, the Chesapeake Conservancy amended the original dataset using 2014, leaf-on United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) and 2010 and 2013 LiDAR data. The amendments added some of the tree canopy missing from the original data. Third, EPA amended the data further by collapsing multiple land cover classes into the seven EnviroAtlas Meter-scale Urban Land Cover (MULC) classes, and making corrections to the Wetlands classes, also using 2010 and 2013 LiDAR. Seven land cover classes were mapped: Water, Impervious Surfaces, Soil/Barren, Tree/Forest, Grass/Herbaceous Non-Woody Vegetation, Agriculture (Cultivated Crops) and Wetlands (Woody and Emergent). An analysis of 712 photo-interpreted land cover reference points yielded an overall user's accuracy of 83.5% (MAX) and an overall fuzzy user's accuracy of 84.1% (RIGHT) (see confusion matrices below). This dataset was produced by Virginia Geographic Information Network and their contractor WorldView Solutions Inc. (WSI), in collaboration with the Chesapeake Bay High-Resolution Land Cover Project - a cooperative agreement between the Chesapeake Conservancy and the National Park Service. It was adapted by the US EPA to support research and online mapping activities related to EnviroAtlas. TwitterAssessing the physical change to shorelines and wetlands is critical in determining the resiliency of wetland systems that protect adjacent habitat and communities. The wetland and back-barrier shorelines of Assateague Island, located in Maryland and Virginia, changed as a result of wave action and storm surge that occurred during Hurricane Sandy, which made landfall on October 29, 2012. The impact of Hurricane Sandy will be assessed and placed in its historical context to understand the future vulnerability of wetland systems. Making these assessments will rely on data extracted from current and historical resources such as maps, aerial photographs, satellite imagery, and lidar elevation data, which document physical changes over time. This USGS Data Series publication includes several open-ocean shorelines, back-island shorelines, back-island shoreline points, sand area polygons, and sand lines for Assateague Island that were extracted from orthoimagery (ortho aerial photography) dated from April 12, 1989 to September 5, 2013. This dataset consists of polygons that represent the sand areas found in orthoimagery taken on the date specified in the filename and in the Date_ field in the feature attribute table. Orthoimagery of Assateague Island were acquired in digital format from U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Virginia Geographic Information Network (VGIN) courtesy of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Prior to processing, the images were trimmed to the Assateague Island area. Using ERDAS Imagine 9.3, the images were classified into 10-40 classes that were coded either sand or not sand. Using ArcGIS 10.1, the resulting coded raster datasets were converted to polygons and edited. The following list provides additional details about the orthoimagery used. The sand areas for each date is in a separate dataset (shapefile) named asis_sand_po_*.shp where the date, in YYYYMMDD format, replaces the asterisk. The orthoimage date for each polygon is also included in the shapefile attribute table Date_ field.
