In 2006, a complete inventory of all the City’s street trees, including trees located within sidewalks, between sidewalks and curbs, or within 6 feet of the street if no sidewalk existed was conducted. One hundred volunteers were trained to record address, location, tree species, tree diameter, condition, and other related information. Trees located in parks and other public property were not included. Approximately 25,000 street trees were counted and the data was loaded into a tree database that the Forestry Division uses daily to manage the trees, track tree work, and record constituent concerns.

This data release contains input data and programs (scripts) used to estimate monthly water demand for retail customers of Providence Water, located in Providence, Rhode Island. Explanatory data and model outputs are from July 2014 through June 2021. Models of per capita (for single-family residential customers) or per connection (for multi-family residential, commercial, and industrial customers) water use were developed using multiple linear regression. The dependent variables, provided by Providence Water, are the monthly number of connections and gallons of water delivered to single- and multi-family residential, commercial, and industrial connections. Potential independent variables (from online sources) are climate variables (temperature and precipitation), economic statistics, and a drought statistic. Not all independent variables were used in all of the models. The data are provided in data tables and model files. The data table RIWaterUseVariableExplanation.csv describes the explanatory variables and their data sources. The data table ProvModelInputData.csv provides the monthly water-use data that are the independent variables and the monthly climatic and economic data that are the dependent variables. The data table DroughtInputData.csv provides the weekly U.S. drought monitor index values that were processed to formulate a potential independent variable. The R script model_water_use.R runs the models that predict water use. The other two R scripts (load_preprocess_input_data.R and model_water_use_functions.R) are not run explicitly but are called from the primary script model_water_use.R. Regression equations produced by the models can be used to predict water demand throughout Rhode Island.
Water-quality data were collected by the Providence Water Supply Board (PWSB) from tributaries in the Scituate Reservoir drainage area, October 1, 2017 through September 30, 2022 (water years 2018 through 2022). Water-quality samples were collected by the PWSB either monthly or quarterly at fixed stations on 38 tributaries in the Scituate Reservoir drainage area, Rhode Island. These data were used to calculate instantaneous loads and yields of constituents in reports by the U.S. Geological Survey. Water-quality samples were collected following a strict sampling schedule so that water-quality samples would be representative of various weather conditions. Samples were analyzed at the PWSB water-quality laboratory at the P.J. Holton Water Purification Plant in Scituate, Rhode Island. Water-quality properties and constituent concentrations were measured by using unfiltered water samples. These water-quality properties included pH, alkalinity, color, turbidity, and concentrations of chloride, nitrite, nitrate, orthophosphate, and bacteria (Escherichia coli [E. coli] and total coliform). This data release will be updated annually to append additional water-quality data collected by the PWSB.

The TIGER/Line shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). The MTDB represents a seamless national filewith no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line File is designed to stand alone as an independent dataset, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. The Area Hydrography Shapefile contains the geometry and attributes of both perennial and intermittent area hydrography features, including ponds, lakes, oceans, swamps (up to the U.S. nautical three-mile limit), glaciers, and the area covered by large rivers, streams, and/or canals that are represented as double-line drainage. Single-line drainage water features can be found in the Linear Hydrography Shapefile (LINEARWATER.shp). Linear water features includes single-line drainage water features and artificial path features, where they exist, that run through double-line drainage features such as rivers, streams, and/or canals, and serve as a linear representation of these features.
