    ABSTRACT To identify the profile of the physical therapist is important for a profession overview, which can help organs and institutions of higher education to train more qualified, fulfilled, valued, and recognized professionals for health care. The profile of the physical therapist has already been studied in other states, specific specialties or workplace; however we are not aware of the current profile of the physical therapist in the state of São Paulo (SP). The aim of this study was to describe the profile of the physical therapist of SP according to demographic, training, and professional performance aspects. All physical therapists registered in Crefito-3 with at least one year since graduation were invited to participate in the study, by means of answering an online questionnaire. In total, 2,323 physical therapists participated in the research. The sample was composed by: 80% women, 62% graduated between 2001 and 2010, 83% graduated from a private university, and 66.7% had attended a post-graduation specialization course. Most of them worked as physical therapists and had physiotherapy as their only source of income. The predominant workplace was home care and the monthly gross income was up to R$ 3,000.00 in 45% of cases. Professionals who were graduated for a longer time, those who work in universities and in their own clinics were better remunerated. Most professionals are satisfied with their profession, often attend update courses, present low adherence to unions and associations and are unaware of the current legislation in force. There is a predominance of female physical therapists in the state of São Paulo, young, who attended a post-graduation specialization course and who seek to be updated, but with low participation in the profession's institutions. Many are self-employed, professionals working in universities and in their own clinics are the best paid and the time of training and experience are relevant factors to achieve a better monthly income.

    Description

    The primary goal of physical rehabilitation is to assess movement impairments and restore function to improve overall quality of life. Virtual reality (VR) may provide the optimal environment to promote these goals due to its motivating and modifiable nature which can be difficult to accomplish through traditional real-world therapeutic methods. Current research of VR for rehabilitation has demonstrated that VR interventions can produce clinically meaningful change in motor outcomes. Despite this, adoption and usage of VR by physical therapy professionals is unclear due to the limited research in this area. Thus, the purpose of this study was to identify the current usage and perspectives of VR in physical rehabilitation among physical therapy professionals. Physical Therapists (PTs) and Physical Therapist Assistants (PTAs) in the United States were recruited to participate in this survey-based study. A total of N = 658 participants completed the survey, which consisted of demographic information followed by the Assessing Determinants Of Prospective Take-up of Virtual Reality (ADOPT-VR2) survey that assesses 12 constructs (e.g., Attitudes, Perceived Usefulness, Facilitating Conditions and Barriers) related to the use of VR in clinical settings.     Description

    Background: Occupational health and ergonomics (OHE) has been recognized as a Physiotherapy specialty in 15 countries; however, a lack of studies that provide profiles of OHE Physiotherapists (PTs) and their professional practices. Objective: To provides a profile of the OHE PTs in Brazil, identify and audit their current professional practices based on the Conselho Federal de Fisioterapia e Terapia Ocupacional (COFFITO) guidelines for this specialty. Method: This was a cross-sectional study. The participants were legally registered with the Regional Council of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy (CREFITO) in Brazil. An invitation to participate in the survey was sent to the members of the Association of Physiotherapists in Occupational Health and Ergonomics (ABRAFIT) and PTs recognized for their contributions to the OHE field. The participants were contacted through e-mail, Facebook posts, and LinkedIn messages. The questionnaire was distributed through the SurveyMonkey platform. Results: A total of 153 (86%) OHE PTs returned the survey. The mean age was 35.6 (SD 6.8) years, mean time in the OHE field was 8.5 (SD 5.6) years, the majority are women (61.5%). The OHE PTs were company employees or service providers. The OHE PTs reported satisfaction with their professional performance (74.8%). The OHE PTs’ most frequent interventions include biomechanical exposure assessments, ergonomic workplace analysis, and occupational health management. Conclusion: The OHE PTs in Brazil are predominantly women with professional experience who earn higher salaries than other PTs specialties. The OHE PTs based on their audited practices within the COFFITO guidelines focus on ergonomic workplace analysis and biomechanical exposure assessment.

    ABSTRACT This study analyzes the working profile of physical therapists from the states of Rio de Janeiro (RJ) and Rio Grande do Sul (RS) in the management of people with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). A total of 256 responses were obtained to a questionnaire sent via the electronic address of the Regional Councils of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy (CREFITOS) 2 (RJ) and 5 (RS), from March to December 2020. The questionnaire comprises 36 closed questions, the variables of which were grouped into: (1) sample characterization; (2) specific data on the profession of physical therapist; and (3) issues related to AD. In this article, only issues related to AD will be analyzed. All questions were multiple choice with 2 to 15 options of answer. Most respondents (88.3%) had already treated patients with AD, but 50.8% needed to review the literature to assist these patients. The main objective reported in the management of the individual with AD was to “delay the progression of motor losses.” The practices were significantly different according to the stage of the disease (p<0.001). More than 85% of the participants cited as a benefit that physical therapy “delays physical dependence.” This study shows the need for further studies that specifically address the intermediate and advanced stages of AD since the current literature is inconclusive and with little evidence regarding physical therapy in the management of this population, making it impossible to create manuals and /or standardization of specific practices for each stage.

    ABSTRACT Physical therapy lacks bibliometric analyses that report the most relevant aspects of its scientific production, as well as the profile of publications of the several specialties of this profession. This bibliometric analysis aimed to evaluate the articles published in Brazilian journals in the field of Physical Therapy and verify their relationship with the profession specialties. This cross-sectional study involved 15 journals with a focus on Physical Therapy, considering articles published between 2011 and 2014. Data of the journals were collected in each home page. We analyzed articles classified among the specialties of Physical Therapy, recognized by the Federal Council of Physical and Occupational Therapy. The Southeast region presented the greatest number of journals and the largest scientific production. Qualis B1 and B4 were the most frequent ones. Among the 2,683 articles, 1,664 (62%) were linked to the area of Physical Therapy. The time between submission and acceptance was 157 (68-243) days, and, from acceptance to publication, 109 (60-177) days. Trauma-Orthopedic Physical Therapy concentrated the highest number of publications (34.3%). Quantitative (80.8%) and human subject research (83.9%), as well as inferential statistics (67.7%), were the most frequent ones and prevailed among the specialties. Physical Therapy remains on the rise regarding the quantity and quality of its research in Brazil, glimpsing the growth of evidence-based professional practice in its various specialties. However, its articles still take a long time to be published. The higher prevalence of quantitative research and inferential statistics may promote substantial progress to the profession.

    ABSTRACT Current studies have investigated the orientation of treatment that physical therapists adopt when treating nonspecific chronic low back pain (CLBP) by assessing their attitudes and beliefs. However, in Brazil, little is known about this subject, especially in the context of the Unified Health System. This study aimed to describe the attitudes and beliefs of the physical therapists working in the Unified Health System treating patients with nonspecific chronic CLBP and to identify the relationship between their demographic and professional characteristics and the treatment guidelines for nonspecific chronic CLBP. This is a cross-sectional population-based study. Data were collected using a demographic and professional questionnaire, and the Pain Attitudes and Beliefs Scale for Physiotherapists. Forty-nine physical therapists participated in the study, and the results showed higher agreement with attitudes and beliefs related to a biomedical orientation. ABSTRACT To identify the profile of the physical therapist is important for a profession overview, which can help organs and institutions of higher education to train more qualified, fulfilled, valued, and recognized professionals for health care. The profile of the physical therapist has already been studied in other states, specific specialties or workplace; however we are not aware of the current profile of the physical therapist in the state of São Paulo (SP). The aim of this study was to describe the profile of the physical therapist of SP according to demographic, training, and professional performance aspects. All physical therapists registered in Crefito-3 with at least one year since graduation were invited to participate in the study, by means of answering an online questionnaire. In total, 2,323 physical therapists participated in the research. The sample was composed by: 80% women, 62% graduated between 2001 and 2010, 83% graduated from a private university, and 66.7% had attended a post-graduation specialization course. Most of them worked as physical therapists and had physiotherapy as their only source of income. The predominant workplace was home care and the monthly gross income was up to R$ 3,000.00 in 45% of cases. Professionals who were graduated for a longer time, those who work in universities and in their own clinics were better remunerated. Most professionals are satisfied with their profession, often attend update courses, present low adherence to unions and associations and are unaware of the current legislation in force. There is a predominance of female physical therapists in the state of São Paulo, young, who attended a post-graduation specialization course and who seek to be updated, but with low participation in the profession's institutions. Many are self-employed, professionals working in universities and in their own clinics are the best paid and the time of training and experience are relevant factors to achieve a better monthly income.
