This file contains demographic data for divorces occurring in the United States during the 1987 calendar year. The data were taken from divorce certificates registered with the vital statistics offices of 47 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. The certificates for each state were chosen at one of five sampling rates (5, 10, 20, 50, or 100 percent), depending on the total number of divorces occurring in the state during the year. Each record includes a weight factor based on the sampling fraction of the reporting state. The demographic data collected include age, race, education, and natality of divorcing parties, and the number of this divorce. Information about the divorce itself includes month, day, and week of divorce.

In 2021, Nevada was also the state with the highest divorce rate in the country.

Note that in the story, charts generally show the share that have ever been married, which is simply 1 - n. In the divorce file, figures are share of the relevant population that is currently divorced, conditional on having ever been married.

Variable names are as follows. Number in variable names are age ranges, so all_2534 is the marriage rate for everyone ages 25 to 34.

The characteristics of French divorces Despite a record number of 152,020 separations in 2005, the number of divorces in France remained stable since the mid-2000s and has also been declining at a rate of 8 percent between 2004 and 2014. Since then, the number of divorces remained almost the same in the country, even though an decrease has been seen between 2016 and 2017. In 2019, the majority of divorces in France were pronounced by mutual consent. Most of divorces pronounced in France concerned marriages which lasted between 4 years and 7 years. Unions in France The number of marriages in France has been decreasing since 2004 and reached 220,000 in 2021, compared to 236,826 ten years before. Same-sex marriage was legalized in France in 2013, but civil partnerships are the type of unions that have increased in recent years. More than 205,000 civil partnerships were contracted in 2010 in France. Implemented in 1999, civil unions in France are established between two individuals regardless of gender.

In 2022, there were about 2.78 million people who had obtained a legal divorce and not remarried in Canada. This figure has been steadily increasing since 2000, when there were about 1.88 million divorcees in Canada.

This collection provides data on labor force activity for the week prior to the survey. Comprehensive data are available on the employment status, occupation, and industry of persons 14 years old and over. Also included are personal characteristics such as age, sex, race, marital status, veteran status, household relationship, educational background, and Spanish origin. In addition, data pertaining to marital history and fertility are included in the file. Men who were ever married (currently widowed, divorced, separated, or married) aged 15 and over were asked the number of times married and if the first marriage ended in widowhood or divorce. Ever married women aged 15 and over were asked the number of times married, date of marriage, date of widowhood or divorce, and if divorced the date of separation of the household for as many as three marriages. Questions on fertility were asked of ever married women 15 years and over and never married women 18 years and over. These questions included number of liveborn children, and date of birth, sex, and current residence for as many as five children. This study focuses on deaths in North Carolina in 1969. Death is defined as the permanent disappearance of any evidence of life at any time after live birth. This definition excludes fetal death s. The data kept for deaths includes the age, race, marital status, and sex of the individual; date, time, cause and location of death; as well as mode of burial.

This data collection is comprised of responses from the March and April installments of the 1992 Current Population Survey (CPS). Both the March and April surveys used two sets of questions, the basic CPS and a separate supplement for each month. The CPS, administered monthly, is a labor force survey providing current estimates of the economic status and activities of the population of the United States. Specifically, the CPS provides estimates of total employment (both farm and nonfarm), nonfarm self-employed persons, domestics, and unpaid helpers in nonfarm family enterprises, wage and salaried employees, and estimates of total unemployment. In addition to the basic CPS questions, respondents were asked supplemental questions in March about the economic situation of persons and families for the previous year. About 53,000 of the housing units interviewed in March were interviewed again in April. In these housing units, all women aged 15 years and older, who had children, were asked the April CPS supplemental questions. These questions concerned child support and alimony payments. Of the 84,000 women found eligible in March, 80,000 of these women matched women interviewed in April. For the remaining 4,000 women interviewed in March the child support and alimony information was imputed. Information regarding child support and alimony were collected to determine the size and distribution of the female population with children affected by divorce or separation. Moreover, the data were collected to better understand the characteristics of persons requiring child support and alimony, and to help develop and maintain programs designed to assist in obtaining child support. These data highlight alimony and child support arrangements made at the time of separation or divorce, amount of payments actually received, and value and type of any property settlement. This collection also contains data covering nine noncash income sources: food stamps, school lunch program, employer-provided group health insurance, employer-provided pension plan, personal health insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniformed Services (CHAMPUS), and energy assistance. Demographic variables include age, sex, race, marital status, veteran status, educational attainment, occupation, and income. Cycle VI of the National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) was conducted in 2002 by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), with the participation and funding support of nine other programs of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. Consistent with previous cycles, Cycle VI contains interviews conducted with females 15-44 years of age. A female pregnancy file was also compiled, consisting of one record per pregnancy for all female respondents having experienced pregnancy. New to Cycle 6 is the introduction of the interviewing of males aged 15-44. The male questionnaire averaged about 60 minutes in length, while the female interview averaged about 80 minutes. For most of the survey a Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) technique was used in which the interviewer entered the respondents' answers into a laptop computer. For the last section of the interview, the survey participants entered their own answers into the computer using a technique called Audio Computer-Assisted Self-Interviewing (Audio CASI). The interviews included questions on schooling, family background, marriage and divorce, having and raising children (including contraceptive use, pregnancy outcomes and "wantedness" of pregnancies, infertility and infertility services, family planning services, sterilizing operations, adoption, and medical care), sex education, first sexual intercourse, sexually transmitted diseases, AIDS, religion, race/ethnicity, employment/occupation, income, and insurance.

In 2023, there were about 15.09 million children living with a single mother in the United States, and about 3.05 million children living with a single father. The number of children living with a single mother is down from its peak in 2012, and the number of children living with a single father is down from its peak in 2005.

Marriage and divorce in the United States

Despite popular opinion in the United States that “half of all marriages end in divorce,” the divorce rate in the U.S. has fallen significantly since 1992. The marriage rate, which has also been decreasing since the 1990s, was still higher than the divorce rate in 2021. Half of all marriages may not end in divorce, but it does seem that fewer people are choosing to get married in the first place.

New family structures

In addition to a falling marriage rate, fewer people in the U.S. have children under the age of 18 living in the house in comparison to 1970. Over the past decade, the share of families with children under 18, whether that be married couples or single parents, has stayed mostly steady, although the number of births in the U.S. has also fallen.
